Welcome to Clean Sphere!

Clean Sphere is a student club that promotes environmental appreciation, awareness, and stewardship among the students, faculty, staff, and alumni of Black Hawk College.  Members have the opportunity to organize and participate in a variety of environmental efforts including, but not limited to, cleanups, habitat restoration, advocacy efforts, enhanced recycling programs, and seminars or speakers that address environmental issues.

What We've Done

Spring Semester 2007

"An Inconvenient Truth" Showing
The BHC Community was invited to attend a free showing of this award-winning and action-inspiring documentary on Wednesday, April 18.

Earth Day Table
Clean Sphere hosted an informational table at the Student Government Association's "Spring Fling" on Wednesday, April 18.  Visitors were eligible to enter for a chance to win great prizes by taking a pledge to take action against global warming!

Trip to Mississippi River Museum & Aquarium, Dubuque
Sixteen Clean Sphere members and friends traveled to the Mississippi River Museum and Aquarium in Dubuque, IA on Saturday, March 31.  In addition to exploring the museum, the trip included a visit to Dubuque's Eagle Point Park for a blufftop view of the Upper Mississippi - complete with migrating pelicans!

Great American Meatout!
Clean Sphere hosted a table in the Lower Lobby to spread the word about the environmental benefits of a vegetarian diet!

Lunch at Niabi Zoo
Twenty five BHC students, faculty, family and friends gathered at Niabi Zoo on a snowy Saturday in February for a pizza lunch followed by a "meet and greet" with some of the Zoo's favorite residents!  In addition to interacting with the amazing animals, participants also learned about the ecological roles of each species and the importance of conservation efforts for maintaining biodiversity.

Fall Semester 2006

Environmental T-Shirt Sale
Members raised over $600 by selling environmentally-themed t-shirts from the Jim Morris Environmental T-Shirt Company.  Funds will be used for environmental projects on campus!

Forever Wild 2006 - Walkin' Jim Stoltz
Clean Sphere joined with the local Eagle View chapter of the Sierra Club to host Walkin' Jim Stoltz at the Black Hawk College cafeteria on Saturday, November 11.  Approximately 150 people from around the Quad City community came together for an evening filled with music and images that inspired appreciation and protection of endangered species, roadless areas, and clean water.  For more information on Walkin' Jim and his mission, visit www.walkinjim.com

Campus Cleanup
On Saturday, November 4, twenty-five volunteers gathered at the Black Hawk College campus to remove 20 tires, 15 cubic yards of trash, and nearly a ton of scrap metal from a wooded area just to the west of campus.  Click the link below to see photos from the event.

X-Stream Cleanup 2006
Black Hawk College was once again a site for the Quad City wide "X-Stream Cleanup" on Friday, August 25 .


Spring Semester 2006

Helped River Action (www.riveraction.org) with Earth Day event at Credit Island Park in Davenport.  Volunteers helped to plant native wildflowers and pick up litter throughout the park.

Partnered with BHC's Social Action Connection to present an Earth Day speaker on campus.  Professor David Osterberg from the University of Iowa spoke to an audience of BHC students, faculty, and staff about the importance of renewable energy, especially wind power.

You can find out about Clean Sphere's events in a variety of ways!  Of course, be sure to check this page regularly, but here are some other discussion boards and mechanisms to stay involved:

1.  Visit and join our group on Care2.com.  Just click on the link, look around, and submit a request to join if you like!http://www.care2.com/c2c/group/CleanSphere

2.  Black Hawk College students, faculty, and staff can join the Clean Sphere "Group" on myBlackHawk.  When you log in to myBlackHawk, click on the "Groups" icon in the upper right corner.  In the groups index, click on the "Service" folder and join Clean Sphere from there.  Once you join, you will see meeting announcements in the "Personal Announcements" section of myBlackHawk and you will receive periodic e-mails from the advisors and officers with information about upcoming events. 

3.  Send an e-mail to cleansphere@yahoo.com and ask to be added to the e-mail distribution list.  In your e-mail, please tell us if you are a student, employee, or an interested citizen!
