June 8, 2009
We finished our Space theme last week. Be sure to ask the kids about the different planets and how they are alike and different from the planet Earth. We also started creating a bit of poetry. We created an acrostic poem about summer together and then the students create a name acrostic (with some help from the group). We were able to type the poems in the computer lab so you will see them coming home in the Friday folders this week.
We will continue to create different types of poems in writing this week. Poetry is a great way for students to learn how to write about one specific topic, and practice using more specific and detailed words. During calendar time, the children have learned all the continents and oceans and we have moved on to learning the 50 states. We are about ˝ way through, so if you have a map of the states at home it would be a great time to help your child practice and remember the states (they really enjoy this). We will also begin our “water” theme this week, concentrating on lakes and ponds.
