The CLASH collective is a small group of local revolutionaries that believes in the power of regular people willing to make trouble. Without struggle there is no progress.

Please explore our website for a better understanding of our theory, practice and vision for a new society.

3/16/07:

1/27/06:

Please be sure to check out our website's new section, DirectAction. It's dedicated to supporting the call to action for the Days of Resistance to the War, drafted in collaboration with a number of groups nationally, to meet the needs of the antiwar movement.

12/27/06:

Welcome to our new website! We have a number of new publication files (flyers, pamphlets, etc) for download and distribution in the Documents section, a listing of all of our projects and activities in the About us section, and our brand new Blog will feature news and commentary from your favorite fanatical fringe, the CLASH collective.

As usual, we are working to build networks and a foundation locally for Students for a Democratic Society, preparing ourselves for the Spring actions against the war with an emphasis on direct action and new organizational forms, and continuing to be a resource for all sorts of groups and individuals who need a hand with the daily nuts and bolts of organizing. We will be producing a special issue of our quarterly 'zine Demand the Impossible focusing on the emergence and potential of a new militant, inclusive antiwar movement.

Aside from that, we are collaborating with others on two upcoming events. The Art of Struggle tour will bring to CT a hip-hop conference, with a mix of performances, workshops, politics and culture. It is slated for the Spring. We are also working with the Military Project of NYC to bring veterans of the Iraq conflict who organized against the war while stationed there, to speak on building an antiwar movement within the ranks of the military. We are aiming for late January or February.

We had in September a very successful event commemorating the 40th anniversary of the founding of the Black Panther Party at the Albany Ave. branch of the Hartford Public Library. We brought together a panel including former Panthers Ashanti Alston (also of the Black Liberation Army and presently of the anti-prison Jericho Movement) Butch Lewis (former chair of the Hartford branch of the Party), Cornell Lewis (prominent community activist) and surprise guest Elise Brown of the old New Haven branch. In attendance was roughly 50 people, mainly people from the North End community.

We always need help with everything we load onto our plates, so please get in touch if you're interested in our work.

8/25/06:

We're coming off the heels of the first national convention of the new Students for a Democratic Society, initiatives for mass, coordinated direct action against the war, and a renewed effort at creating a more cohesive and effective anarchist movement here in CT. Our plans for the immediate future include our event for the 40th anniversary of the founding of the Black Panther Party.

More long term we will be striving to build SDS and the non-student section, Movement for a Democratic Society in the hopes of creating a space for coordination and growth along anti-authoritarian, direct action-oriented lines. And just in case there was somebody out there who wasn't accusing us of nostalgia, we're hoping to start organizing local Industrial Workers of the World activities in earnest.

Political Resistance & Human Rights

in the Americas

Pablo Franco Hernandez, Union de Juristas de Mexico

University of Connecticut Law School, Hartford

William R. Davis Courtroom, Starr Hall

 3:30 to 5:30 pm

In May 2006, thousands of teachers in the Mexican state of Oaxaca took to the streets seeking above-starvation wages and broad educational reforms. In the following weeks, the teacher’s union organized encampments and further protests in Oaxaca city, drawing over a million supporters. In a bold move, several women’s organizations took over the state-controlled radio and television stations. Hired gunmen were sent in. What ensued was the illegal detention, disappearance, or death of dozens of teachers and demonstrators, including an indymedia journalist.

Attorney Pablo Franco Hernandez, who is fighting on behalf of those detained, will speak about political resistance and human rights in the Americas.

Reception following lecture
