The hot night of summer, in the air crickets and fireflies, mosquitoes whining around the kitchen window, Lux Radio theater on the radio and Mama in her cotton slip did the evening chores.
The iron was heavy and connected by a removable plug on a heavy cord. Mama sprayed each piece of clothing, rolled it and let it dampen in the basket.
These were the days of no air conditioning, so the open screen door and window were the only relief.
