October 2005 Update: I reckon we'll have a 30-year reunion in 2007, if y'all are up to it. The first one to set up any events wins a prize to be named later. I think I still have some cans of Vienna Sausages from Harry's Food Store. No really - I'm in Austin, so you locals will need to step forward.

Steven

November 2005 Correction: First one to set up any events that do not involve the Steve Miller Band wins a prize.

I increased the font size - I think the Internet shrunk over the last few years. When did those letters get so small and hard to read? (from behind my shoulder: "Uhhh, dad, I think the whole point of HTML is so the user can adjust their browser to display the page any way they want, including the font size. That is why it's called a Graphical USER Interface." Thanks, kid. Go read Old Yeller or something.)

Hey, while I'm firing up the scanner, check this out!

Mr. Polunsky,

You may place the Goldbeck panoramic picture from 1977 on your website. Please make sure that the “Goldbeck” copyright logo is clearly visible. There will not be a charge for this permission. If you come across the band picture, you may post it as well. Have fun remembering the past!

Hey Steve I don't know if you remember me from school. We only met a few times. I hope that things are well with you. I was just wondering if you had a picture of our graduating class of 1977, I had talked to Mike Castillo once and he had his, but I wonder if there was a way I could find or purchase one. If you find out anything could you email me here at work aramire7@ethus.jnj.com I would appreciate it.

Thanks Art Ramirez

San Angelo Central High School
Class of 1977 Reunion
August 1-2, 1997

Web Page of the August 1-2, 1997 Reunion of the Class of 1977, Central High School, San Angelo, Texas.

This page updated November 22, 1997 - David Davila's letter added. Yes, I know I have not updated it since the reunion. But, since people still run across it and respond, and since we are likely to have another reunion one of these days, I am leaving it up for the time being.

Hi! Steve
On doing some research for real estate I came across SACHS 77 Reunion homepage(hoorah). It sure does bring back some memories. At that time I had long hair weighed only 140 lbs. played in the percussion section and was trying to keep from being late to class. I now have two beautiful daughters Audriana(7) and Cara(6) they live with their mom out of state and I am currently living in Port Hueneme, Ca. in the Ventura/Oxnard (805)area. I decided to stay in the area after my last Air Force assignment having been Vandenberg AFB. I am currently work with the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Dept. as a corrections officer at the Honor Farm Branch, been there for 7 yrs.. I never thought I would be doing this line of work but it has nice benefits and I never run out of customers. Anyways if there is anything planned for the next reunion please any information that you can forward would be greatly appreciated. I've missed all the previous gatherings and hope to make all the reunions that follow. I was home in June/July and my Mom advised me that there was a reunion in August but I was unable to attend due to having been short of personnel at work. Looking forward to the future. Wishing you and everyone Good fortune. Hope to hear from you soon and other fellow Bobcats.

Sincerely,
David G. Davila

Old News

Many thanks to Lee Phillips for serving as temporary mail drop. Lee is now an Administrative Law Judge with the State Office of Administrative Hearings. This means two things: you call him Your Honor and you don't break traffic laws in Lubbock. Dr. Dana Kay Speer Phillips is an OB-GYN and a Central grad also.

Catherine Gillis scouts the Class of 1976 Reunion in the beautiful Cactus Hotel.

This picture was taken at the reunion of the Class of 1976 and provided courtesy of Rick Smith at the San Angelo Standard-Times. You can see our classmate Catherine Gillis sharing fond memories with Lance Read in the ballroom of the beautiful Cactus Hotel. FLASHBACK

"It's Hard to Say Goodbye to Yesterday" Is Homecoming Theme

"The halftime coronation of Donna Abrigo as Homecoming Queen capped off the annual Homecoming festivities, held during the week of October 25-29. A senior Tex-Ann leader, Donna is only the second Tex-Ann to be chosen queen. She was escorted by Ramiro Garza. Homecoming week spectators also saw the traditional parade with all its floats and a 27-0 football victory over the Abilene Eagles." (From the 1976-77 Westerner, Central High School yearbook, page 36.)

And now, some sights of CHS.

The Bobcat

a bronze statue of a bobcat.

The Bobcat is the mascot at Central High School. This statue is located in the center of the campus near the Cafeteria and Office buildings.

"On May 20, 1977, despite several attempted castings and numerous letdowns, 1976 Central graduate John Cavness finally was able to unveil the new bronze bobcat that he designed and sculptured. It was the end of one era and the beginning of a new when Mayor Tom Parrett, in an official proclamation, declared it 'Bobcat Day' during rainy dedication ceremonies on the Central campus." (Original text from the 1976-1977 Westerner, Central High School yearbook, page 304.)

Sarah Bernhardt Theater

side view of the exterior.

This is the Sarah Bernhardt Theater. The theater will hold well over 2,000, and has been home to award-winning plays and musicals, plus concerts from the Band, Orchestra and Chorale. The CHS Campus was built in the late 1950's, and is still a vibrant, modern facility.

Recent additions: Robert Alexander (Alx4556 (at) aol.com) says he will come. Robert says Dean Moutos is interested too. (Robert thanks Bruce Swartz for providing the reunion dates.)

"Out of curiosity, I did a San Angelo search on Yahoo and found the class of 1976 reunion homepage, which of course noted your new position as organizer of the reunion. I'm interested in the details (e-mail address, if it's not self-evident on your software, is Stuart_Mieher (at) monitor.com, regular mail is 30 Jackson Road, Belmont, MA 02178.... I moved to Boston in 1988 to go to business school; I've been a management consultant since for a firm called Monitor Co. since then, doing strategy consulting, which is one of those fields that's a bit difficult to explain to your grandmother. People swing between not quite understanding what I do and then wondering why any company would pay a firm to do something so self-evidently simple. Oh, I also sidetracked back into the Wall Street Journal for a year, having been pining away for journalism, but soon found I missed consulting more and ended up back at Monitor. As for the really important stuff, I met Mary Averill here shortly after I moved up; we were married in 1991 in her home town of Clarence, in western New York. She's far better than I deserve on all dimensions.... Our daughter, Kate, will turn 2 this August 19th (Bill Clinton's birthday, too, for you Democratic stalwarts). Anyway, we're hoping to make it to the reunion. Please keep me informed. Also, I found the picnic on Saturday the best feature of the 10th; I hope it remains. (signed) Stuart Mieher."

Hi Steven -- I see that a very outdated note of mine to you is still up on the CHS reunion website, so if you feel obliged to put all notes coming to you there, please replace that one with this one. Unfortunately this one must say that I received the reunion dates too late to offset plans I had already made here at home, but I hope everyone has a great time. I'm looking forward to the 30th now!

Best wishes to all,

"Hello, My name is Leonard LaGrappe. I now live in Pittsburg, California. It's north of San Francisco. I was wondering if you know when the 1977 Class reunion will be held. I am a 1977 graduate of Central High. My wife LaJuan is a 1978 graduate. Any info would greatly be appreciated. Thank You, Leonard LaGrappe, 238 Case Dr., Pittsburg, CA 94565 E-mail: llagra (at) pacbell.net Leonard_Lagrappe_at_Sanfran (at) postmaster2.dot.gov"

Yes I do work for DOT. Actually for the U.S. Maritime Administration. I'm a Marine Engineer working with the Ready Reserve Force a part of the National Defense Reserve Fleet. Thanks for the info and hope to see you at the reunion. Thanks, Leonard"

" Dear Steven, While looking at users' pages on texas.net I noticed you were from San Angelo. There was something about your name that seemed familiar, and I realized you might be related to Nathan's Jewelry Store of San Angelo or Allen Polunsky (Tx Brd of Criminal Justice Chrmn)? Anyway, I grew up in San Angelo -- left there 40 years ago (1956). The high school class I was supposed to graduate with was the first class to graduate out of the "new" SACHS complex (1960); so, your reunion was very nostalgic to me. Good luck with the reunion, and mucho thanks for the nostalgic trip on your page! Sincerely - John Munro (jlmunro (at) texas.net)"

Response: Actually, our family business was Harry's Food Store on Twohig. Allan is a cousin. You should see Central now - you wouldn't recognize it.

"Wow! Harry's Food Store! I loved its wooden floors and candy selection. Our house was 1 1/2 blocks west of Harry's on Twohig - later (1951) we moved further out to the Ted Brown subdivision at Twohig and Campus Bvld. I know you're right about SACHS - maybe I'll go there for a weekend and check it out. If nothing else, San Angelo used to have great Mexican food - maybe they still do?"

Steven,

I ran across your homepage while "surfing" this past weekend. I'm currently stationed at Malmstrom AFB in Great Falls, Montana as commander of the 341st Transportation Squadron...the latest in a series of "Air Force Adventures". I moved here last fall from Washington DC where I worked on the 1995 Air Force Base Realignment and Closure team and was also part of the Chief of Staff of the Air Force's Long-Range Planning Group.

I'd really like to make it home for the reunion this summer and would appreciate any details you can provide me. I'll send Lee Phillips a letter with my address, etc. but I refuse to call him "Your Honor".

We'll see you this summer

Kevin Gamache

I've been wondering about our little reunion...from the phone calls my mother has gotten, it seems like y'all are really getting it together! I'm still in the Washington, DC area, still working on Capitol Hill and still planning to come, whether or not Congress is still in session. They're big boys and girls, and I suppose they can handle my absence for a little while, anyway.

I didn't know that the Class of '77 had moved so rapidly into the 90s that we had a home page...hot damn! And I worried that most of us wouldn't be able to pay off our legal expenses...

Write me back (if you dare! :) ) at "lauremc (at) aol.com". Hasta!

Laure McLaughlin

Hail to you dear S A H!
Author's Note: Except for Rick Smith's photo, the neat pictures are from a web page of the twenty-year reunion of the Class of 1976 from San Angelo Central High School, in San Angelo, Texas, by John Hendry, codigest (at) onramp.net, who set a great example and helped me with my research (translation: let me steal his stuff). He, in turn, credits J.B. Frank. And yes, the mexican food is still great.
