Sword of Truth
Having lived in
Reflecting upon these mock demonstrations and sword drills, I am reminded as a child in Sunday school of the “sword drills” we would have. Taken from the biblical reference to the Word of God as a two-edged sword, sword drills were competitions designed to see which student could locate a scripture passage the fastest. Students would stand in a straight line across the front of the classroom and the teacher would bark a series of commands: “Attention, draw swords, John 3:16, charge.” The first student to find the passage would step forward from the line-up, then be called upon to read the passage to be sure that the student had indeed located the correct text.
The bible has been around for over 2,000 years, full of stories and lessons about how human beings, mere mortals, encounter the living God, the creator, sustainer and savior of the universe. The bible, the words of scripture, reveal unshakeable and timeless truths. The castle walls in perspective, reveal timeless truths about the battles that’ve hit them; marked with hits from cannon balls. These marks have stood for generations. The sacred words of the bible were recorded on scrolls, and over the years collected into the books that we call the bible.
All scripture is inspired or “God-breathed”. Because God inspired scripture, these sacred writings prompt many different kinds of encounters with God. First, scripture teaches general lessons about life and about God. Second, scripture reproves or rebukes sinful living. Third, scripture offers a course correction. And fourth, scripture provides specific instructions for right living. The purpose of each of these encounters is to solidify faith and equip believers for service in the
Too often, the bible becomes a book of quotations that individuals use to attempt to prove a point in favor of their own biases. Actually, as a book of history, the bible testifies of a God who is firm and faithful, gracious and generous across the generations. As a book of hope, the bible portrays a future with God that is beyond imagination of comprehension. Scripture invites us to anchor our lives in realities that transcend tentative circumstances.
The scripture will equip you for good work. Every Christian has the capacity for good work. As you encounter God in the scriptures, the word of God will shape and reshape, form and reform your character and your giftedness so that you are prepared for your spiritual life as it blossoms. Make bible reading and bible study a part of your regular discipline. The accumulation of bible knowledge builds within your mind a reservoir that gives you strength, especially during seasons of distress.
Read the scriptures. Let the words on the page come alive as you encounter the God who inspired them. Is the bible one of your regular conversation partners? Choose for it to be today!
Seek and you Shall Find
Have you fervently asked God for guidance or for strength? I think we do most especially when we’re faced with trials and obstacles rather than on a constant basis. When we ask God for guidance and strength, we’re continually inviting our Creator to reveal himself in a variety of ways; and it can be both enriching and rewarding to our spiritual growth.
Jesus made it clear to his disciples, to his followers ( we to are followers ): they should petition God to meet their needs. So should we. Genuine , heartfelt prayer provides powerful changes in us and in our world. When we lift our hearts to God, we open ourselves to a never-ending source of divine wisdom and infinite love.
Do you have any questions about your future that you simply cant answer? I think we all do, for noone knows the future besides God. Do you have needs that you cant meet by yourself? God is our provider. If you answered yes to these questions, then ask God for direction, for protection, and for strength- and don’t just stop there; keep asking him everyday that you’re blessed with life. Whatever your need, no matter how great or small, pray about it and never lose hope. God is not just near; he’s here and he’s perfectly capable of answering your prayers. Now, its up to you to ask!
Ask and it shall be given to you; seek and you shall find; knock and it shall be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks, it shall be opened. Matthew 7:7-8
Put God First
As I was getting ready to cross the street at a crosswalk in the downtown district of a major city, I kept telling myself that the signal light was taking forever. Drivers do that a lot, however walkers-such as I tend to grumble more, especially when we know it’s getting ready to rain, or it has already! The traffic light reminded me of a scripture as I stood there practicing patience; the scripture is found in Proverbs 3:6 and reads “ In everything you do, put God first, and he will direct you and crown your efforts with success.”
Signal lights are designed for safety; when cars stop, walkers get a walk light. When cars stop, other cars can go. Busy intersections without stop lights would be a disaster; could you imagine downtown
When we follow a traffic light, our efforts most often are met with success. If we go against a traffic light, chances are most that we’ll wreck. If we’re walking, chances are most that we’ll get hit. When we go against God, we won’t succeed and our efforts will fall into ruin. We may not like the timing of some traffic lights, we may wonder when Gods timing will meet our deadlines; in everything you do, continue to put God first, and he will direct your efforts in his timing. Take comfort in the fact that he will never give us more than what we can handle, if we only put him first!!
Members of the Body, as One
The first day I joined a church body in northwest
Each member of a body working together reminds me not only of a church body, but of a family working together as one whole body. Each person makes us that family; a family is ultimately united by two, husband and wife; and when we join a church, when we give our lives to Christ- there’s union of two, and then a greater union with all the members. What a family has in common is their last name; what a church family has in common is the name as well-christian. For mo matter if we’re Catholic, Baptist, or Methodist for example; our common goal is to bring the light into the world, that light which first illuminated is through the Word or through others in evangelism efforts. How was that light carried through others? Through the work of the body as one; the congregation prayed for the pastor who in turned delivered the Word within the location of worship prepared by other members. We all have a purpose, the key is the blood which Christ freely shed for us, that we become free to realize our gifts and talents.
Once we grasp a hold of that freedom Christ created for us and the promise of life everlasting, one we realize our gifts and talents and begin to seek Gods will in our lives, we can expect great transformation! We can expect awe inspiring growth in our personal lives, and within our church families that we have formed a unity with….AMEN
One in the Body
During my last visit to the hosptial, while waiting for the doctor for what seemed like eons; I heard one of the nurses say to another, "Could you take care of the gallbladder in 2B?" The "gallbladder?" It sounded so impersonal in the language of the professionals, as if there were no person, only a gallbladder in the bed down the hall!
This reminded me of healing, and the fact that each individual person is whole: body, mind, spirit and relationship. We're not simply a gallbladder sitting on a bed. Yes, we are many parts, but of one body; both individually and the church. Just as much as God loves us as individuals, God loves us all together as the church- the people. While Jesus paid the highest price for our spiritual healing, both scripture and experience demonstrate that we may have a role to play in the salvation of others, and our participation can be costly.
A healthy fear of God is where wisdom begins ( Proverbs 1:7 ). Fearing God is also where local church unity begins and where conflict ends. The congregation is a temple that God builds, inhabits, and guards; it is a spiritual house made of human members, held together in Christ by bonds of fellowship. In any christian congregation, therefore, a threat to fellowship is an affront to God. While God assumes ultimate responsibility for preserving church fellowship, human members are responsible as well- being one in the body. Since we all belong to Christ, oneness is the ordinary way of being in the church. Unity, in other words, is always at hand for christians who choose to yield to the mind and purpose of Christ.
When you become a christian, you were joined profoundly with all others who share in the spirit of Christ. You may notice the human characteristics that make you different from another in Christ, but such shallow distinctions must not be allowed to larger than what you share together in the Spirit. Distinctions give us personality, room for expression, but they are not intended, nor should they be used to divide the body itself.
Stay on focus and on purpose. When it comes to your personal church life, your fellowship with Christ comes first. Your own oneness with the Lord will spill over into other christian relationships and make you want to do the work of the gospel. When you are busy for Christ, you will be less distracted by the human foibles that undermine fellowship. AMEN
The ER, and the Church
I took a fall recently and hurt my wrist, which resulted in a trip to the local emergency room for a check-up. There were several other people in the waiting room with various injuries in need of treatment; and what everyone had in common was a concern for one another, as we asked one another "what happened" and "if there was anything we could do for the other" despite our personal injuries or those of loved ones. There was a sense of fellowship and connection that brought comfort to each of us for momentary release of the pain we were experiencing.
Upon those moments of time, my mind drifted to our places of worship and the church body- the people, that fill those places. The church can be related to much like an emergency room; where those in need come to seek healing and comfort. The question for each of us that fill the church building during times of worship, bible study, and fellowship; is are we complacent in what we've become used to each Sunday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday or whatever day we meet? Or do we enthusiastically greet newcomers who may come in seeking healing from lifes hurts, habits and hangups. Our church is much like a hospital, where those in need come in search of comfort, in search of an answer.
We are the hands which God has to hug and reach out to others in unconditional love and fellowship; the hands which God has to help wipe away tears of others and bring comfort; we are the legs which God has to deliver that care and love to others.
Noone would like a complacent hospital where patients wait for eons because the staff think that there's noone waiting; we would shudder at that thought if we were a patient waiting! The same is true regarding the church; if we ourselves in the shoes of a newcomer, wouldn't we want to feel welcome in a non-complacent church? One where the members warmly and openly welcome the newcomer, the new believer, the lost, the hurt, the lonely, the hurting, without a second lost. As a church, thats our job, our commission; to go forth- to go forward, to make the first step...that step begins today!
Why does it begin today? The church is the people, not the buildings; and we represent the church at our jobs, in our communities- wherever we may be. When others see us, they see the church, they see the light shining through us- a light they may have been looking for. It's not a light for us to hide, but rather for us to shine. AMEN.
One Another
Isaiah 58:10 tells us that if we spend ourselves in behalf of the hungry and satisfy the needs of the oppressed, then your light will rise in the darkness, and your night will become like the noonday. It goes on to say in verse 11 that the Lord will guide you always, he will satisfy your needs in a sunscorched land...you will be like a well watered garden, like a spring who waters never fail.
There are over 50 "one anothers" in the Bible. Love one another, serve one another, share with one another, etc. Obviously you cannot practice these "one another" commands by yourself. They must be done in community. What matters at the end of your life is not what other people say about you. What matters most is what God is going to say about you. I want God to say, "Well done, good and faithful servant."
We're all servants in some form or another. Some of us may be active in church outreach and mission projects, while others may simply pour a cup of water for someone- that's a servant. Helping one another. When we smile and it helps to bring a smile to someone in need, that's a servant delivering an act of kindness and christian love. Each person is a unique and beautiful child of God. Beauty is all around us. To see it, you must first open your eyes, then your mind and finally, but most importantly, your heart.
Having had lived below the poverty level for many years, including a year on the streets; I can attest to how dark each of those days seemed when the north wind howled and the cold rain would pierce through clothing with a strong bite. When I entered soup kitchens, shelters, and churches and encountered the unconditional and unjudgemental love of others; my dark days became brighter, where I found hope that life restoration was possible. I found not only shelter from the elements, but shelter of peace that someone cared.
Isaiah 58:10, spending ourselves in behalf of the hungry and oppressed, we can indeed shine as a beacon of light for those in darkness. To see the smile on someones face when you hand them something as simple as a pair of socks, is truly rewarding. We can help one another, by uniting and working together with one another; and with one another, this world can be a better place. It's not about me, or us, it's about one another; letting your light shine for the world to see-AMEN!
A Tiny Spark, and Success
We’ve all been to a race, or have seen a race; and know that the object is for the runner to reach the finish line, in order to win the prize which lay ahead. Most races contain a prize, however there are some which are run solely in remembrance of someone, something or some event; and there is no prize. Rather, there is the satisfaction of knowing that success was achieved. One of these marathons is the Oklahoma City Memorial marathon, in which the runners run in memory of one of the bombing victims of that fateful April 1995 day that they may not know. Many runners who complete this marathon will take their medal and leave it at the memorial marker of the person they ran for on the OKC Memorial grounds.
Success is the “completeness” of something; and in the example of a race, a successful race is achieved through the cheers and support of others in the crowds. As a course marshal for a marathon, the feedback of the runners was overwhelmingly thankful for those who had cheered them on in the run. It was feedback that I could translate into our christian walks of life.
In the first days, prior to and right after I gave my life to Christ; I needed the help of others to make that transition. I had questions and needed answers about this new christian walk of life; and through the help and guidance of others, there was success. My brothers and sisters in Christ had succeeded in bringing me into the light of Christ, and I had succeeded in reaching salvation through the cross and blood of which Christ shed for all of mankind. The prize was everlasting life, however success continues as I began to reach out to others in unconditional love; teaching them as I was taught. Even if others that I reached out to in evangelism efforts weren’t ready to take the plunge into the “living waters of life,” I continue to cheer them on with encouraging words and a warm smile and loving heart.
Success dwells in knowing that we did all that we could and gave out best; for if we shoot for the stars and miss, at least we’ll still land among them. You can’t achieve success without first trying. Continue to reach out to others as is the greatest commission of Christ; to go into all nations everywhere, teaching others as Christ has taught us. We do this through love, the new and greatest commandment; christian love which is unconditional in nature and has the power to transform many. How does one person out of some 6 billion people have the ability to begin this transformation in others? It takes a tiny solitary spark to start a flame; it takes a tiny solitary spark to bring forth light. Christian outreach and success begins with us….AMEN!
Connections are an important part of our life; from the days prior to our birth, we had a connection through our internal feeding cord- the umbilical cord. It connected us to our mother’s nutrients so that we could grow and develop into who we are physically. After we were born, we quickly developed connections to our families or nurturers; and perhaps they helped us to develop a spiritual connection. Sometimes we had to form that spiritual connection on our own, or perhaps you’re still working on that connection. Remember always that there is a family of brothers and sisters under Christ, the church, willing to extend their connections to all.
Power flows through connections. A disconnected toaster can’t provide warmth. A disconnected stereo can’t play beautiful music. A single disconnected wire can prevent your car from moving forward. Likewise, if you are spiritually disconnected from God, you lose the warmth, beauty, power, and direction he intends for your life.
I remember mailing over twenty cards at one time at the post office during Christmas, and in the rush to put stamps on all the cards, I missed one. Indeed, the card came back to me with a note requesting postage. That card missed its intended recipient, its intended connection; all because I was in a rush, and missed that important forty-three cent postage connection.
When we’re in too fast a pace, often we miss the mark, often we miss the connection to that which is so important; our prayer life with God. Too often our one on one connection with God can become neglected when we allow life’s daily grind to impede with that all too important relationship. It’s like allowing a connection in a vehicle to spoil; before long, without maintenance that vehicle will quickly grind to a stall. Without prayer, our relationship with God will quickly grind to a halt.
Does God hear our single prayer upon the some 6 billion people on this globe we call earth and home? The answer is, yes! God knows the number of hairs upon each of our heads; and if he knows that much detail of each of us, then, yes, he hears our prayer! Prayer is just as much of a connection as our esophagus connects our mouths to our stomachs; prayer provides us with spiritual nourishment in the form of communication with Our Heavenly father, answers to prayer, and a time to hear God speak to us. Prayer gives us a time to unwind and meditate, a time to find spiritual refreshment and renewal.
Prayer doesn’t have to be fancy, it is talk with God just as you would talk with your best friend; talking and conversation with God about your life, what you need, and want to change. You see, God knows already, but wants to hear it from our heart just as we would our boyfriend, girlfriend, wife, husband, son, daughter, or best friend- it’s a relationship with God. Talk just as you normally would to the person next to you, that’s the connection of prayer. A simple prayer could be: “Good morning God. I love you, thank you for all you’ve done for me, help me through today, I know I’m not alone- that you’re with me.”
Prayer is a fantastic connection to an awesome and mighty God, Our Heavenly Father and Daddy who dwells all around us, and yearns to dwell within us; pray today! Prayer works! AMEN
ALARMS
I bought a used phone once, which worked great; it was a cell phone with all the fancy bells and whistles including a camera, voice recorder, FM radio receiver and day planner. It worked great with the prepaid service that I had at the time; and for the most part, the phone sat silently plugged into the charger. I often forgot that it existed, except for the few times that it rang with use as my website phone number; and those were most often wrong numbers. Aren’t wrong numbers exciting, especially when you’re expecting an important call; your heart leaps with abundant bounds in great expectation!
This cell phone sounded like the army of a thousand trumpets one night, as I was just settling in for a nights sleep. “A prayer request,” I thought, as I quickly rose from the binds of my comforter to answer the call. Stumbling over every object in my path, I found my way to the phone and flipped it open to the response of, “Hello!” There was no answer on the other end, to which I again said, “Hello!” In the meanwhile, the phone continued to blare like a trumpet call!
At a much closer glance, I noticed that the phone wasn’t ringing; but rather, it was a reminder of someone’s birthday that was programmed into the phone. I didn’t program the reminder, and what’s worse, I don’t know whose birthday it was; all I know it that their name was Avery. Avery was celebrating his twenty-first; so Happy Birthday to Avery, whoever you may be, with many more to come!
The point of this devotional is to be aware of false alarms, and not be caught up with over obsession in them. Some false alarms are worth heeding, such as a fire alarm or tornado siren; however, the alarms I’m referring to are, “The world is going to end at midnight on the second Saturday of the month!” We’ve all heard from others when the world will end; and in reality, we don’t know. Matthew 24:44 tells us that “you must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.” We don’t know, however, we can prepare our hearts in the right place for the Lord.
Matthew 7:15 tells us to, “Watch out for false prophets, who will come to us in sheep’s clothing inwardly, but are ferocious wolves.” We have to stand guard and always keep our hearts in tune with the One Way, One Truth, One Light; Christ Jesus who bore the pains for all people everywhere, despite race, gender, class or origin. Salvation is for everyone, which can be received in us this very day. It’s this salvation through the cross that carries us from an empty life, into one of fullness and strength; the bridge across being that cross upon which Christ was nailed with outstretched arms in a bridge-like form.
The Holy Word tells us through the Ten Commandments to worship no other gods or false idols; gods with a lower “g”, for there is only one true God. The one true God is the beginning and the end, the Alpha and Omega. The one true God with a capital “G” is our Heavenly Daddy, Comforter, Nurturer, Provider, and Guide. Thanks be to God for all he’s done for all mankind! Let our hearts be in tune to the nature which abounds us, to life in itself, and hear God who whistles in the wind across the valleys and in the waves of the oceans and seas. Let us hear God who sings from the melodies of the beautiful birds and through the voice of all who sing praises aloud to our God on high! AMEN!
We are always learning something new; learning doesn’t stop when we leave home school, high school or college; there’s simply so much in the world around us, that all we can do is stand in awe of a mighty and loving creator. Through God all things are possible, even those things that escape our understanding, because we’re called to have faith. Just look around you, here are some facts:
It’s estimated that between 1.4 and 1.75 million animals and plant species have been discovered; and most people think that humans only have five senses ( sight, hearing, touch, smell and taste ). But scientists now agree that we have at least nine senses and maybe as many as 21, including the ability to feel heat and to feel pain. Our biologists and scientists have a lot still to learn, learning never ends. In nature, most hawks have such good vision that they can see a mouse from a mile away, and a chicken egg has 10,000 pores through which the tiny chick can breathe. A few more facts, before you kiss your significant other or slap on some lipstick; did you know that most lipstick contains fish scales! If you’re looking for a job, you can be a scatologist; the person who studies poop!
There are many fun and interesting facts within the bible. Do you know those long names that you simply couldn’t pronounce, the ones that seem like they’re 35 letters long? No names or words of more than 6 syllables are found in the bible!
In the bible the word “Lord” is found 1,853 times. Truly points to who’s important; the one way, truth and light. The word “Jehovah” is found 6,855 times.
The four most inspiring promises are one: John 14:2-6, “In my Fathers house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you with me that you also may be where I am. You know the way to the place where I am going. Thomas said to him, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?” Jesus answered, “ I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me.” Two: John 14:27, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I don’t give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” Three: Matthew 11:28, “Come to me all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” And finally four: “Psalm 37:4, “Delight yourself in the Lord and he will give you the desires of your heart.”
We all are missionaries, for our neighborhoods are the mission fields to which we belong. The first verse of the 51st chapter of Isaiah is the one for a new convert. It reads, “Listen to me, you who persue righteousness and who seek the Lord: look to the rock from which you were cut and to the quarry from which you were hewn.” If you’ve ever seen a rock quarry, than you’ve seen the heavy equipment and all the work that it takes to cut the rocks; the blood which Christ shed for us upon the cross cut us out of the rock quarry, that may at one time have seemed so impossible.
Bible trivia for those who like numbers; there are found in both books of the bible 3,538,483 letters, 773,693 words, 31,373 verses, 1,189 chapters and 66 books.
The most beautiful chapter is the 23rd Psalm, which as many know, reads “The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not be in want. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he restores my soul. He guides me in paths of righteousness for his names sake. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.”
Each verse of Psalm 136 ends alike, and the repetitive ending is, “His love endures forever,” for it truly does, Praise God!
The 35th verse of the 11th chapter of John is the shortest of the entire bible. It reads, “Jesus wept.” Jesus walked through all of humanities battles, so that we can claim victory, because he was victorious. At the same time, he experienced many of the same emotions of humanity, because he came into life as man….and he wept.
These are just a few of the many facts that can be found in the bible; the best way to learn more is to read more, and more will be revealed. Our God is an awesome God, and this day is a gift, it wasn’t a promise. So make the most of today and learn something new, of which I hope you have through this devotional. If you still need a fact to convince you of the amazement of all that surrounds us, a cows nose-it has a unique imprint, just like our fingerprint; each cows nose throughout the world is different!
Praise God for all of the wonders of life that surround us; in nature, in our personal lives, in our bodies, and in scripture…..lets pray:
Father, Creator Almighty, we give thanks for this day, the gift of life; we give thanks for all you’ve done for us and continue to do. We thank you for everything that you’ve created that we find understanding of, and even those things that we don’t yet find understanding—help us all to grow stronger in faith and simply to believe, because we know that you are in control. Help us to open our hearts and minds to continued learning and growing as we continually seek your will in all we do, AMEN
Admission
“Openly examine and confess my faults to myself, to God and someone I trust.”
We’ve all had a secret at some point in our life, perhaps we’re holding a secret today. I’d like to know who’s holding the secret to how we’re going to zero out the national deficit of a few trillion….that would be a great fundraiser! But to hold a secret takes energy, to keep ourselves in bondage by not admitting our unhealthy ways of life takes energy. It takes more muscles to frown than it does to smile. So we can actually save a few calories! If we really think about it, admitting things was fairly simple as a child. When I was a child and I rode my bicycle through the open fields and hit a patch of prickly thorns, I came home and told dad what I did because I needed a new inner tube. We too, need to admit, because we have much awaiting us that we can be joyful for, if we only take that step.
When we’re doing something that’s not healthy, that’s hurting ourselves or others, or holding us back from experiencing the true blessings of the one true way, one truth and one light-Jesus; we have that cartoon like angel and devil on our shoulders. Our conscious tells us that we’re about to do make a mistake in judgment or we already have. So we acknowledge our faults; but the difference in acknowledge and confess is that we repent-we turn back!
God knows already what we’ve done, but through admission, we identify the weakness; and the person we trust….sponsor, accountability partner, pastor, friend, teacher, wife, husband, counselor-they can help us to sidestep those same obstacles when they appear again. Why is it so hard to admit our wrongs? We somehow feel like we have everything to lose and nothing to gain. Once again, it’s important to realize that God knows already; but we become stronger by personally saying “I messed up!” When I was a child I loved pushing my finger in the Kool-Aid powder. My fingers turned red, and you could say that I was caught red handed! I had no choice but to admit that I was wrong, but that experience made admitting my wrongs a lot easier. Also partly because I was the only kid and “Fluffy the cat took off before she could take the blame.
Seriously, however, do you know what we really have to lose by telling our secrets and sins to another? One, we lose our sense of isolation. Two, we will begin to lose our unwillingness to forgive; when people accept and forgive us, we start to see that we can forgive others. Three, we will lose our inflated, false pride. As we see and accept who we are, we begin to gain true humility, which involves seeing ourselves as we really are and seeing God as he really is. Four, we will lose our sense of denial. Being truthful with another person will tear away our denial. We begin to feel clean and honest.
What do we have to gain, we all love to gain things; and the best inheritance we have is eternal life in heaven through the blood Christ shed on the cross for us. By admitting our wrongs, our habits, hang-ups and unhealthy ways of life we gain one, healing that the bible promises. Look at James 5:16, “Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed.” This is one of the most important reasons that the fellowship with one another in church, or in any type of support group such as Celebrate Recovery is so important. You may hear people say…”Well, I read my bible-I don’t need to go to church!”....we need one another! God forgave us when we confessed our sins to him; now he says you will begin the healing process when you confess your sins to another. Two, we gain freedom. Our secrets have kept us in chains- bound, frozen, unable to move forward in any direction. Admitting our sins snaps those chains-AMEN! Psalm 107:13-14 tells us that “they cried to the Lord in their troubles, and he rescued them! He led them from the darkness and the shadow of death and snapped their chains.” The only sin God can’t forgive, is the one not confessed. Three, we gain support. We gain the support and encouragement of others and help in choosing the right path. Many others have been down those paths before us, and they serve as living testimonies and witness, so that we may learn.
In closing remember Romans 3:23-24 which reads “All have sinned…yet now God declares us not guilty…if we trust in Jesus….who freely takes away our sins.” Remember also 1 John 1:9 which reads “ If we confess our sins he is faithful and just and he will forgive our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness..”
We admitted to God, to ourselves, and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs. One final note; it’s important to stress in this, “the exact nature” of our wrongs. No beating around the bush with the should have, could have would have or if onlys; no, the exact nature of our wrongs. Why did we do what we did? I stuck my finger in the Kool Aid because I loved the instant access and gratification right off my finger, even though my conscious told me not to.
We’re not perfect, we all make mistakes, we all err at many points in life; it’s human nature. Thanks be to God that he sent his only Son to shed his blood upon the cross for our sins. Let’s pray:
God, we ask that you fill us with your peace and strength. We know that you have forgiven us for our past wrongs and sins. Thank you for sending your Son to pay the price for us, so that our sins can be forgiven. Thank you for allowing the chains of my past to be snapped. In Our Saviors name we pray, AMEN
The topic of this selection is time; that element which we add to many phrases of our lives such as, too much time….too little time….or not enough time. The reality is, everyone has the same amount of time in each day; and an even greater reality is that the time we are spending at this moment is a gift from God. Many times, we may allow ourselves to focus on yesterday; we beat ourselves up and exhaust ourselves with what should’ve been or what could’ve been. Just the opposite, we may worry about tomorrow, when tomorrow hasn’t yet materialized; and thus, we lose focus of the gift of this day. We’re only human and thus, it’s in human nature that we worry about yesterday, later today or tomorrow; no one is immune.
There is an acrostic that I would like to share about time, that can help us to make the most of today-a gift from God, Our Father. God is good all the time; all the time God is good. The first letter in time is “T” which stands for “trust.” When the going gets tough, and the tough gets going; when it seems that you’re faced against a brick wall in your daily walk of life, have trust that God will provide that rope to make it over the wall! Trust in God and submit your lives to Christ’s care and control. We will face hills and valleys in our lives, sometimes more rugged hills than peaceful valleys; that’s a guarantee…even after we’ve submitted our lives. When faced with trials and obstacles of many kinds, remain in the present day; let go and let God work. Once Jesus was baptized, he went into the wilderness for 40 days; for 40 days he was tempted and for those 40 days he persevered through trust. In God all things are possible, even those things we feel to be impossible. Christ successfully made it through those 40 days; he wasn’t alone, the Holy Spirit was with him, and Our Father was with him. Through 40 days, there was provision.
The next letter in time is “I” which stands for “invest.” How and where do we invest our time is important. Walking down the movie and game aisle of a department store can provide true shock and awe into what today’s generation is immersed in. So many movies depict violence and foul language; the same can be said for 3-D video games, teaching those underage especially, that5 it’s ok to fight and engage in acts of crime. The world-wide web is a wonderful tool for research, for connection to one another and to our church families; these are a few of the positive things. The internet, however, can be used as a portal to view sites of immorality at the stroke of a few letters. The greatest investment are internet filters and television V-Chips, so we can get a better grip on what our youth today watch and see.
How do we invest our time outside of the church doors after worship and bible studies? Are we Sunday Christians, or do we take the light of the world-Christ, within our hearts- and let it shine for others. Do we avoid others within our communities that don’t meet our liking; or do we treat each person we come across as like an angel unaware? Do we treat each person as if they could be Christ, unbeknown to us? How much time do we invest in immersing ourselves in scripture, our roadmap of life; look for a bible whose pages have been highlighted and underlined from front to back- and you’ll find great devotion to the word! When we “invest” in something, we’re saving something, or making the most of something; Christ gave his life to “save” us from sin. Through the blood of Christ shed for all of humanity, we have the opportunity for eternal life- something we can truly be thankful for. Today, at this moment in time, is one in which we can surrender all the Christ; for the future isn’t promised to us; except for life everlasting in Christ when we take time to consciously submit our lives and will to his care and control.
The letter “M” in time stands for “make” time. No, we’re not going to perform a miracle here and create time…but we can make time. Just as football, basketball, hockey and other sports players take time outs to regroup and realign their game plans; so we too, have to take time to prioritize. Often this includes taking an inventory of what we’re doing and not doing, what we do well at and what we struggle with; and placing God in the lead of all we do, is the top priority. Making time and investing tine go hand in hand, except that when we make time, we make a self sacrifice of those areas that perhaps aren’t as important as we once thought-and only serve3d to hold us back. This is where the surrendering of our hurts, habits and hang-ups come into focus. In John Chapter 5, Jesus asks the crippled man who has been sitting by the pool for 38 years if he want to be made well. Sure, we want to be made well; however, being made well, often is a personal choice. Are we willing to give up those areas that are holding us back; are we willing to make time for Christ? It’s through Christ and the power of the Holy Spirit that we can each pick up our mats and walk free of whatever is holding us back.
The final letter in time is “E” which stands for “exciting”….what an exciting feeling it is when we experience God working in us and through us to help others. We are the hands which God has to hug others with and make contact; the mouths with which to speak the “truth” of the gospel-Jesus-into our communities. What an exciting feeling when we submit our lives to Christ and release all the baggage that’s been holding us down like a weight; what an exciting feeling it is to know that Christ has already defeated all of our battles- that we can claim victory! What an exciting feeling it is to know that we’ve been blessed with the gift of today; and that today we have the opportunity to reach out for a new beginning. What an exciting feeling it is to know that we’re covered in the blood of Christ, that we’ve been redeemed……AMEN

Fear is a common reaction to many of life’s struggles, in which we’re faced with and don’t immediately understand how we either got into the situation, the situation found us, or how we’re going to find peace through that situation. We could recall many fears in our lives, and some of those fears we could look back at and smile; while others may still affect us to this day. My biggest recollection of a fear occurred at age ten when my family and I moved to
When we make the decision to turn everything over to Christ; we are emptying our lives of all the ways that we have been used to. We are giving up all of those hurtful habits and hang ups that resemble shards of glass; that have done nothing more than cut us and cause pain for ourselves and perhaps those around us. Christ takes those broken pieces, and through his love makes us a new creation. 2 Corinthians 5:17 tells us “ when someone becomes a Christian he becomes a brand new person inside. He’s not the same anymore. A new life has begun.”
It’s easy to say that in words; in reality, however, the devil tries harder and harder to knock us over when we surrender our old ways. Many times this discourages those who have surrendered, because they thought everything was going to be great; and it is, when you have someone walking with you that’s been through the “mud.” Christ has defeated all of our battles; we can claim our victory in Christ. It’s important when you surrender to Christ, to plug into a church home, into the word-through bible study, daily devotions, and recovery groups such as Celebrate Recovery. It’s also important to have a sponsor.
Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 tells us that “two are better off than one, because together they can work more effectively. If one of them falls down, the other can help him up. But if someone is alone…there is no one to help him…two men can resist an attack that would defeat one man alone.” Recovery is much like playing a football game; sometimes we grab a hold of the ball and make the touchdown, and other times we fumble the ball and then fall flat on our face. If you’ve ever watched a football game, when a player falls, his teammates are right there holding out their hand to help pick him up. Our sponsor is there to help pick us up, to encourage us. Proverbs 27:17 tells us “As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another.” The phrase “one another” is used in the New Testament over fifty times! We need one another!
To be christian is to be Christ-like; to be Christ-like is our job. Our sponsor is like our job coach to be able to point out our old dysfunctional and self defeating patterns and quickly confront us with truth and love; without placing shame or guilt. Ecclesiastes 7:5 tells us that “It is better to be criticized by a wise man than to be praised by a fool!”
There are many qualities of a sponsor. Does the walk match the talk? Is their lifestyle matching their talk, or do they leave the church building leaving behind all the church values each week? Do they have a growing relationship with Christ? Do they express their desire to help others on the road to recovery; there’s a difference in helping someone and trying to fix someone. Do they show compassion, care and hope, but not pity? You don’t want someone to feel sorry for you, but you do need someone to be sensitive to your pain. Are they a good listener? Do they offer suggestions, because sometimes we need help in seeing options and insight that we may not be able to find on our own. Can they share their struggles with others? I want a sponsor who is living and working the ways of Christian love everyday; someone that is a continual testimony of what recovery can do.
A sponsor has many jobs, most importantly to be available in times of crisis or potential relapse; someone that a new believer or someone who has just surrendered can call at any moment before relapse. Once again Ecclesiastes 4:12 says it well “that two men can resist an attack that would defeat one man alone.” Another important job of the sponsor is to be a good sounding board and someone that can share his or her own experiences to offer strength, hope, and encouragement to the new believer or the person who has just surrendered.
Celebrate Recovery groups believe strongly in sponsors and accountability partners, to help encourage those that have surrendered areas of their lives to Christ. I believe that church bodies should embrace the idea of sponsors to new believers and new members. Turning ones life to Christ can be an awesome experience, but also brings increased temptations, trials and hardship. The devil tries harder and harder to trip up the new believer. Then discouragement can begin to set in, and then there’s degeneration in ones beginning steps of faith as they begin to experience fear. They’ve given up ways that they’ve known for so long, and they need someone to help replace that emptiness with friendliness and encouragement. They need to know through witness of others that things will be amazing as they grow in Christ, and a sponsor can do that. A sponsor can be anyone dedicated to raising and nurturing a new believer in spiritual growth.
When you encounter someone who is seeking God or asking about spiritual matters, as new believers often do, you are seeing God at work. If someone asks you spiritual questions, whatever else you have scheduled, cancel your plans. Go with that individual and look t4o see what God is doing in that persons life; encourage them, uplift them, provide words of inspiration….that’s the quality and work of a sponsor. A sponsor can begin with you, today! Our greatest sponsor, Christ! The sponsor who is always at work around us, Our Heavenly Father…Praise be to God!
Extreme Makeover ( Luke 15:11-24 )
During the fall months, as footballs are being propelled through the air in stadiums across the nation; there will be many catches, recoveries, fumbles, wins and losses. I would like to stress two important key words once again- recoveries and fumbles; recoveries and relapses. Sometimes we catch the ball firmly in our recovery, and sometimes it slips from our hands. We’re not perfect, just as athletes aren’t perfect; but each day our endurance and strength increases as we become more and more grounded in Jesus, the only Higher Power who offers the truth, the power, the life and the way for us to make that firm catch and grasp onto recovery.
Some people wonder and ask why their problems increase after they have given their lives to Jesus and surrendered their hurts, habits and hang-ups. It’s because certain powers were in control of their lives before they gave their lives to a living God; and it makes those difficult powers of the devil fight harder. Through Christ, however, all things are possible; including the power to knock the devil on his butt with the help of our accountability partners, pastors, teachers, friends, and family- in the name of Christ Jesus.
On the topic of sanity; insanity has been defined as “doing the same thing over and over again expecting a different result each time.” Sanity on the other hand, has been defined as “wholeness of mind, and making decisions based on truth.” There is an acrostic for “Sanity”, which reads S for strength. ( Psalm 73:26 ) My mind and my body may grow weak, but God is my strength; he is all I need.
The A is for acceptance. ( Romans 15:7 ) Accept one another, then, for the glory of God, as Christ has accepted you.
The N is for new life. ( 2 Corinthians 5:17 ) When someone becomes
Christian, he becomes a brand new person inside. He is not the same anymore. A new life has begun.
The I is for integrity. ( 3 John 4 ) Nothing brings me greater joy than hearing that my children are living in the truth.
The T is for trust. ( Proverbs 29:25 ) It is dangerous to be concerned about what others think of you, but if you trust the Lord, you are safe.
The Y is for your Higher Power Jesus ( Romans 5:8 ) While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
The best scripture I found to explain sanity is Luke 15:11-24. This is the parable of the lost son, who we find taking his half of the wealth split between the family, and spends it on wild living. Wild living can be open to much interpretation- prostitutes, dancing, and drinking to name a few? When the “high” or “rush” was gone, he resorted to slopping pigs to earn a meager living. When he became so hungry that he eyed the pigs slop with envy, he realized that he had a problem! He said, “Even at home, the hired servants had food enough to spare, and here I am dying of hunger! I will go home to my father”….and when he did, and confessed, his father embraced him and had a celebration. Within verse 23 we find the Father saying “we must celebrate, for he was lost, but now he’s found.”
This scripture translated into our lives; we were given wealth in several ways- we are blessed with life each day being a gift, not a guarantee, and we are offered the precious blood of Jesus, freely shed for us for the forgiveness of sins. Before we surrendered our lives to Christ, to our Higher Power; perhaps our lives resembled this lost son. Or perhaps our lives resemble this lost son today. We lived a high life, relying on our own power; almost like a race, we took off too quickly, and before long found ourselves beaten and exhausted to continue. Where-ever we happened to be at the time, we attempted to find refreshment; but even then, we were in trouble- much like the lost son who became so hungry and realized with the pig slop, that he had a problem ( insanity ).
Many times we go through, or we may have gone through an endless cycle of experiencing those “highs” and the “lows” before we realize that “God is our refuge and strength, an ever present help in trouble” ( Psalm 46 ).
God is ever present, just as the Father in the parable of the lost son was willing to take his son back. There was a celebration when the son came home; and I can only imagine Our Heavenly Father and all the angels throwing a great party when we surrender our lives, our hurts, habits and hang-ups. I can imagine a banner hung high with our name on it and all the rejoicing and high-fiving with God that we made the best decision we could ever make. It’s with this decision to surrender, that I have to stress again that temptations and pressure will be even greater as we ask God to give us the courage to change the things we can and to accept the things we cannot change; the devil doesn’t want us to reach this milestone in our lives. Here is encouragement in those times according to Nahum 1:7 which reads “ The Lord is good, a refuge in times of trouble. He cares for those who trust him.”
How do we break free of the cycle of “insanity” and find sanity? The most important thing is to be honest with God in order for change to happen. Yes, he knows everything about us already, but when we confess and admit that we have a problem, and are ready for change; God will help. The lost son went to the Father, Our Father won’t force himself upon us.
In our surrendering, are we ready for an extreme makeover? Are we ready for a heart transplant? Our heart is the center of who we are and for any external thing to change, we need to change on the inside. We need a heart transplant because without one, we will not be able to love God; we will not be able to love people; and we will not be able to live. In Ezekiel 36:26, the Lord says that, “ I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh.” God is in the business of doing extreme makeovers and he wants to start with the heart.
Don’t let your heart continue to harden; you don’t have to continue down the path of hurt, of habits, or hang-ups, of unhealthy living- humble yourself. Recognize that you are unable to be obedient to God until you receive Jesus as Savior, and have your heart transplanted. Recognize that no matter what comes your way; together you and God can handle it.
1 Corinthians 10:13 tells us that “God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out.” The salvation that God gives to you is a door for you to enter into your complete deliverance. It takes time for people to discover that we must work out our salvation with fear and trembling; but when tempted, ways out and into christian edification include worship, daily prayer and bible reading, daily quiet time and reflection, daily holiness ( listen to christian music to sooth your mind, and daily sanctification.
Physically, why does a person get a heart transplant anyway? Because their heart is bad. Many times a person does not even know they have a bad heart until it’s too late. Spiritually having a bad heart, this is where our job comes in, as believers, as we surrender to Christ; to go out into our communities and let others know that there is hope. Let others know about the one way, one truth, one light, One Christ Jesus- who has the power to transform lives; to let others know about support programs such as Celebrate Recovery; that there are others who care. Our job is to show others the direction in which we are moving forward, and that there is hope; that we have been where they may be, and that there is a way forward into an awesome light with Christ. Our job is to go forth teaching others what Christ has taught us, as the great commission…our mission field being outside the front doors, and on the streets, within our communities, in our places of work, in our homes- where-ever we may be.
My testimony of recovery to others is found within the verses of 2 Corinthians 1: 8-9, which reads “ We were ( I was ) really crushed and overwhelmed, and feared we ( I ) would never live through it. We ( I ) felt doomed to die and saw how powerless we ( I ) was to help ourselves ( myself ); but that was good, for then we ( I ) put everything into the hands of God.” The verse goes on to say “ God…..alone could save us ( me )…and we ( I ) expect him to do it again and again.
Why again and again? Because we’re not perfect, and along the path of recovery we’re going to fumble that football many times; but there will be many times that we score and win….and that’s important to remember along our road of recovery….that God is always ready to help us, always on standby, always ready for action. All we have to do is make the call, and he will answer. Recovery is a daily thing, and we constantly need a power greater than ourselves- a Higher Power who will provide us with the strength, acceptance, new life, integrity, and trust to allow us to make sane decisions based on his truth! As we move forward in recovery, always remember that with God, your future will be blessed and secure. Matthew 6:34 tells us “ not to be anxious about tomorrow. God will take care of our tomorrow. Live one day at a time.”
Judges 6:11-16 Walking Together ( out of Denial )
Having lived amongst the massive wheat fields of northwest and central
Wheat is normally threshed in the open; however Gideon threshed wheat in a much hidden place, a winepress, to keep it from the Midianites- the enemy of the time. When we hide something, normally it’s in denial. More than likely Gideon had thought that the Midianites would pass though and not find the hidden wheat. I’m sure that we all have something that we want to hide, that we want to deny; and all the efforts we put into hiding, it can become wasted energy. As a child I used to sneak into the kitchen and jab my finger into the Kool-Aid powder for a quick tasty treat; and I thought I could keep it hidden, except for my red finger gave it away, all the time!
As Gideon was hiding his wheat, as he was hiding the labors of his life, an angel of the Lord appeared and said, “the Lord is with you mighty warrior.” We are all survivors; by taking the time to read the words, and having the gift of an opportunity to take another breath- a gift of God alone- we are a survivor. The Lord is with us, and if we believe that with all our heart, then that alone makes us a mighty warrior; armed to conquer all those battles that lay before us, covered in his blood.
“But”, Gideon replied, the most famous word as we were growing up, “but why has everything happened to us? What about all the promises….the manna, the walls of the temple falling…here we are in the hands of the Midianites.” I believe that we’re all guilty at some point, or many points of asking “Why God”….when something happens, when we don’t understand something in our lives. And I believe it’s when we get to the point that we don’t understand something in our lives, that we reach out for our own personal securities…drugs, alcohol, overeating, lust, or in other ways threshing wheat and hiding in that winepress- which won’t successfully work.
The Lord tells Gideon, the Lord tells us to “go in the strength that you have.” We all have different gifts and qualities that make us special and make us unique; and all those gifts combined can help one another. “Go in the strength that you have”….the Lord is our strength…”the Lord is with you mighty warrior.” Sometimes things happen that we can’t understand, such as illness, sickness, oppression, and poverty. Take for example the disciples in John 9 who asked Jesus if it was the man of his parents that sinned, that the man was born blind. Jesus responded that it was neither, the blindness happened so that the work of God might be displayed in his life. But not only in his life, but in our life when we go forward in the strength that we have; and break out of our denial. When we show everyone what we have to fight for, everything we’ve worked for…our lives, our families, our educations, perhaps our jobs or knowledge to help one another….we are a mighty warrior.
“ But Lord”…”But Father”…how many times once again did we say that as a kid! As a kid most likely it was because we didn’t want to do something; but I believe it’s almost a sign of admitting weakness…”But Lord, how can I save
The Lords reply…” I will be with you, and you will strike down all the Midianites ( the enemies ) together.” When the Lord says that he will be with us, it’s the same Lord that created the earth on which we stand and spoke, and so it was created! When we work together, pray together, join together with accountability partners, bible studies, step studies; we are working together to defeat the enemy that wants to put that temptation in our lives to hide behind.
Coming out of denial, coming out of hiding and walking with the Lord can be a bed a roses; a beautiful thing. There are thorns, however, and we’ll feel the pain- that’s a guarantee. But we don’t have to do it alone; Christ has been before us, he’s walking along side us- and within recovery teams and church families; we have others to help us….and that’s the true testament of Christianity, to be Christ-like, helping others along the way. Our road to recovery, it begins with the Lord with us, mighty warriors! Today is the day, a new beginning, day one; that we can step out of denial and into the grace of God, knowing that we’ll have others to help us along the way…we are, and we can be mighty warriors…AMEN
CLOTHED IN THE BLOOD OF CHRIST
Imagine for a moment that the United States President, Queen of England, or some great political figure has invited you to be the guest at a great banquet. First you’d probably be shocked by the personal invitation, and then after you recovered from the pure shock in receiving the invitation, perhaps you’d be looking to see if they had the right address! Indeed, it’s your invitation! What do you do? My first impulse would be to find out what they’re having for the main course, having a great love for food; however, I would also want to find the best suit and tie for such an extravagant affair.
We find in the verses of Matthew 2:1-14 that a king was having a wedding banquet in which many were invited. The oxen and fattened cattle were butchered and everything was ready. Nobody came who was invited, because nobody had the time. I can only picture within the beginning of this chapter that this king could be God who gave up his only son, Jesus, that we may accept him as Our personal Lord and Savior….a perfect wedding; and no one had the time. They paid no attention, one to his field, another to his business. How often in our lives do we find ourselves so tied up with petty affairs, that draw us away from the one way, one truth, and one light- Jesus Christ- and all the promises that have been prepared for us? How often do we neglect to read our bibles, or stop to pray, because we allow our days to become filled with things that block us from what truly matters. It’s easy to allow small things, the dust on our cabinets for example, to stop us from taking a personal inventory that can help us to promptly admit when we’re wrong, when we goof up; and thus we find ourselves further drawn from what truly matters-Christ.
Because no one came, no one had time; the king sent his servants into the streets to gather all they could find, both good and bad. The wedding hall was then filled with guests; and you could just imagine the variety and diversity that had shown up. Perhaps when they received their invitation upon the streets, or in the projects, the shelters that we would see today; they were shocked! When we evangelize, when we reach out to others…we go into all nations ( all places ); people may not feel worthy. The homeless person who has little to nothing invited to a wedding banquet? He or she may not have felt worthy, however, all are called, and were called- and so many took advantage of the invitation.
In verse 11, we find that the king enters in to see the guests and notices a man who was not wearing wedding clothes. “Friend” he asks, “how did you get in here without wedding clothes?” The man was speechless. The king told the wedding attendants to tie this man hand and foot and throw him outside into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. For many are invited, but few are chosen.
Why you may ask, would someone who was invited off the streets to a wedding banquet at the command of the king, be thrown out by the king? It has been conjectured that it may have been the custom for the host to provide the guests with wedding garments. This would have been necessary for guests at this banquet in particular, for they were brought in directly from the streets. The failure of the man in question to avail himself of a wedding garment was therefore an insult to the host, who made the garments available.
If I had accepted the invitation of the United States President or other foreign dignitary, which after shock and disbelief I would; and if I showed up in my tattered clothes for the feast, I’d be turned away at the door in a hurry! I would’ve had time to prepare for a wonderful event; but dressed like a laughing stock, obviously wouldn’t have taken the time or consideration.
We are invited to enter into the
Pray: Jesus, thank you for taking all my pains upon the cross, and for shedding your blood for me, that all my sins may be forgiven. I accept you into my heart this very day, this very moment; make me a new person- my heart as white as snow- I believe in you. AMEN.
BEARY TRUE STORY
Shot with a tranquilizer dart after running rampant through a neighborhood near Alligator Point, Florida ( in the Panhandle of Florida ), a black beat decided to head for the nearby Gulf of Mexico. As the tranquilizer drugs took effect, a biologist by the name of Adam Warwick jumped in to keep the bear from drowning. This was a 375 pound male black bear; and once he managed to get the bear to shore, a backhoe operator helped load the bear onto a truck and relocate the bear to a nearby National Forest, where it was released back into the wild.
This is a true story that played out just recently, and in news conferences after a daring rescue, Adam expressed little fear for his actions; animals were something he loved and enjoyed within his field of biology. To us, perhaps, this would’ve been a feat of great fear. Adam stated in one interview that there were many jellyfish that could’ve stung the bear, and that the bear could’ve drowned.
There were many obstacles and barriers that could’ve kept Adam from pursuing the bear; the jellyfish, the sharks, or the bear itself; but he proceeded anyway in pursuit of something he loved and wanted to grasp a hold of and save. In this same light, we all have been down rough and rocky roads, and at the end of those roads are something that we want to grasp a hold of so dearly….healthier life. As we reach out for a healthier life-wellness, through the road of recovery, we will face many challenges and obstacles….and if we were to embrace the “go to it” momentum that Adam had with the bear….we too, will overcome those obstacles and challenges; and they won’t seem that difficult to BEAR! Especially when we have the team support of others such as our church families and support groups…and of most importance, God in our life, leading our way in all we do…..AMEN.
LETTTING GO
My favorite past time is going to amusement parks; the best park I had the opportunity to enjoy was Six Flags of Texas at
Letting go can be difficult, especially in things of which we’ve found comfort; even if that comfort is unhealthy. Examples include cigarettes, alcohol, drugs, sex, overeating, or overspending to name a few. Letting go means relinquishing control. When you mindfully practice letting go, you are letting go of your attachment to the outcome of an action, a thought, or an event. Letting go is related to willingness-surrendering.
If I had surrendered, or let go of my grip of the handles on the roller coaster; I would’ve found that I was still secure. To “let go and let God” is profoundly deep and challenging; however to let go of your will and turn things over to God is often the turning point in a life of suffering, fear, grief, rage or chaos.
Letting go means turning over your will and trusting that something larger than yourself will take over. The lap restraints of my seat on the roller coaster would’ve held me in, had I let my hands dangle to enjoy the ride. They held me in even though I held on for dear life! God is standing by and ready no matter what position of life we’re in. Letting go means trusting that you will be alright, no matter what happens to you; because you’re walking in faith. If you believe that you are the only one that can make everything alright, you’ll wear yourself out; so letting go will not only bring you joy and serenity, but it will make life a whole lot easier. It may not seem easier at the present moment, but you will get to that point.
What can help make “letting go” easier? Surround yourself with a support system such as the church, where two or more are gathered. This becomes a safety net to cushion falls, we’re not perfect, we all fall. Immerse yourself in the word, the Holy Word is like a roadmap to life; the word is dynamic in that one verse can fit many situations…its awesome and enlightening. Pray; talk to God just as you would your friend or neighbor-in simple words- nothing fancy, it’s easy….and God hears us. Our God is a God of comfort, love, healing, compassion, mercy…of peace, just to name a few of the many words of life.
There’s life in letting go, and we can help others to find that life in letting go by demonstrating christian ( Christ-like ) values we’ve learned; by making the most of each day for what it is, as a living testimony of what Christ has done-and continues to do for us. Like a lighthouse shines it light to others, don’t hide the light ( Christ ) within you- let it shine for the world to see…let it flow like a river across all the lands that you may be!
KEYS
We all have something at this moment, perhaps, that gives us authority, regardless of our status in life. What is it, you may ask? Our keys. They key to our home, to our vehicle, bicycle lock, or diary- to name a few examples, give us the authority to access those things. Sometimes we accumulate more keys than what we need, especially if we’re a procrastinator, because we forget to remove those foreign keys; and these keys then become tangled within the keys that we actually need. Some keys are small, while others are gigantic. When our family lived in the
Perhaps we’ve all heard it in the news at some point, of someone of importance gaining keys to a city, which is truly a symbolic act; however, in reality, we have access to a key to a city, to a kingdom- if we simply reach out and accept it. Do we have to be someone of importance to accept this key? We’re all important to God, we’re all children of God; he knew us before we were born, and knows the number of hairs on our head….we are important!! How can we effectively use this key? Get rid of all the other “garbage” keys that take up space on our key rings of life; that no longer get us anywhere.
There is only one key that will give us access into the kingdom of God, into a much better place; that key is the blood of Jesus shed freely for us. The blood of the covenant poured out for many ( Mark 14:24 ); a covenant is a promise, a promise of eternal life. A covenant of eternal life and the forgiveness of sins.
So there we are with all those extra keys, all those sins; that’ll give us access to somewhere we don’t want to be! Sure, sin might bring temporary pleasure; but where do we truly want to be? Get rid of those old keys today, all of that extra weight…all it takes is a simple prayer:
Jesus, thank you for going to the cross for my sins, that they may be- that they will be forgiven; because I believe in you, and humbly repent. I cast aside all the crud, all the sin that has cast me into darkness; I cast aside all those dead keys, for the one true key through the presence of your Spirit upon my life, in all that I do. Come into my life today and renew me, make me whole again, by the power of the blood that you shed for me-AMEN
Matthew 16:19-“I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.
PRECIOUS BLOOD
Just recently I gave the precious gift of life through a Red Cross blood drive at our church; and although I don’t know whose life I may help, I’m overjoyed to know that someone’s life may be saved. Words of thanks cannot be expressed enough to those who donate time and time again; there are donors who have given as much as 16-18 gallons over time! This life source may help anyone from a tiny infant involved in a car wreck, to our servicemen and women injured in the line of duty as they serve in defense of freedom. The hardest part of the blood donation was the needle; it was provocatively large! As I twinged and flinched, the nurse kept saying “Be Still!” We may also hear these words as we sit in the dentist chair, with the sound of the drill getting ever so closer to our mouths….Be Still!” They make it sound so easy! Back to the blood donation, however, in order for me to produce something good for another, I had to be still; as hard as it was!
Life wasn’t guaranteed to be easy; from the moment we were conceived we were destined for rough and rocky roads. Many of those roads tend to scrape and cut us beyond the pain of a simple paper cut; and if it weren’t for the greatest blood donor of all, we’d be in deep trouble! Who was the greatest blood donor; no one other than our precious Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. And there’s something quite amazing about this gracious and most adored blood donor, that we don’t need any needles to receive his blood! His blood was already shed for us upon
When we face the many trials and tribulations of life, storms and waves of life, Jesus has the power to step into our lives and say “Quiet! Be Still!” ( Mark 4:39 ). He rebuked the wind. When we call upon his name, when we ask him to enter into our lives, he commands the turbulence to “Be Still”, and for just a brief moment we find that shimmer of hope and of joy that we’ve been looking for- that flow of life.
Often, when we give our lives to Christ, the devil tries harder and harder to knock us down; it may seem that the road sometimes becomes rougher than before. Remember, however, the words of God in Psalm 46:10…”Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.” How can we be still in a world of increasing poverty, violence, chaos, and catastrophe? Ground yourself in the word, treat others as angels unaware, and listen for Gods voice in the rustling of the trees amidst the wind or when many of natures creatures sing in their harmony- be still for a moment, relax, take a breath and praise an awesome God!
In closing, in the words of Psalm 89:8-9…”O Lord God Almighty, who is like you? You are mighty, O Lord, and your faithfulness surrounds you. You rule over the surging sea…( the surging sea- the torrents of our lives); when its waves mount up, you still them! When we begin to practice being still in the best of times and in the worst of times; it is then that God can begin to use us more and more to further edify and enrich not only our lives, but those of others for the good of the Lord. Just as we have to be still for the Red Cross to put that large looking needle in us-to help others; so let us be still in this- a new day-before the Lord, and see miracles take root….AMEN
Power in Words
We all have a favorite “hang out” or “siesta” spot where we can find enjoyment and relaxation, away from the hustle and bustle of life’s daily grind. Hopefully we find this spot within the confines of our church sanctuaries on Sunday mornings; however, my favorite spot has become Saturday outings to the zoo. We all need a place to turn for relaxation, for respite; a place perhaps to pray, reflect upon scripture and recharge our batteries-so to speak.
At the zoo, I find countless opportunities not only to exercise and take in the fresh air of life complete with its abundant sounds and often warm radiant rays of sunlight; but to see all of Gods creations in their beauty of color and odd names. Seeing these precious creatures of all shapes and sizes, I was reminded of the beginning, with Adam, when he had the power to name all the animals- and so it was. Surely, scientists have played a role over many years in naming animals with some names that make it seem like they’re having a contest for the longest name that no one can pronounce; but Adam called a bird a bird, and it was a bird. A cat was a cat, dog was a dog, and so on.
Adam was given the authority by God to name the creatures and so they were; and we too, in a similar way, have the power of words in our daily lives. When we wake up to a new day, do we say it’s bad or good? When we’re not feeling well, do we say “I’m sick” or “I’m going to get better?” Many of us would prefer, “I’m going to get better”, and we too, have that power in what we say, and for what the outcome may be.
Just recently, my ceiling sprung a small leak from above; and my first impulse would’ve been to have voiced every unclean word I could think of, which wouldn’t have stopped the leak. With a small bucket, ten hours time, and thanks to God that I still had a roof over my head, the leak had stopped. Indeed, it takes a measure of spiritual discipline; however, that was also the day I enjoyed my respite at the zoo. Had I moaned and groaned, spit and spattered; the animals would’ve still been content at the zoo, but I would’ve been frustrated, short-winded and bogged down. The choice was in my hands, a good day or a bad day?
Faith often is the kick-start to a good day, even when grey skies have gathered over; for faith is the assurance of things not seen. Just because we can’t see the blue sky at the end of the mass of grey clouds, does that mean it’s not there? When we first awaken to a new day and we stand up, and then sit down perhaps, do we test the chair or seat to see if it’ll hold us? We breathe the air which we don’t see; do we doubt the air because we don’t see it? Of course not! Even though our days may start off on the wrong foot, perhaps, take that step in “believing” that it “will” be better-take that step as Adam did with authority…saying “this is the way it is”…..For truly this is the day the Lord has made, so let us rejoice and be glad in it!!
SUBWAY TRAIN
As the price of fuel continues to rise like oversized muffins, so our wallets and pocketbooks begin to deflate quicker than a pin pricked balloon. As the price of fuel blossoms larger than the mushroom cloud of an atom bomb, more and more dependence is placed upon public transportation. Public transportation is a great-green-way to conserve resources; although, our budgets are still impacted by the fuel prices we’d hope to eliminate by using public transportation. Although public transportation costs are also hit by rising fuel costs, other things such as household goods and groceries are also hit, because of how much it costs to get those items to your neighborhood store. Try buying a gallon of milk for $1.79! It’s more like $3.49 these days! It’s a trickle effect; and naturally, we moan and groan.
There are many things in our daily live that we are faced with, being challenges and obstacles, that we have the option to groan and moan about; which can trickle down from us to those around us such as family, friends, and co-workers. Others may see us as examples, especially children looking to adults; non-believers in Christ or new believers looking to those grounded in faith…we are examples of Christ as “Christians”- to be Christ-like. If we approach others in Christian love as like they are angels unaware, I am confident that this christian love will spread to and through others…slowly perhaps, but love will begin to take root.
Returning to the method of public transportation, having lived in the
The subway station of New York City, to me, was the most confusing of all the systems I’d ever ridden upon; and often without the help of a map, I found myself at the worst possible stops. Without the bible, our roadmap of life, without other Christians in our midst to encourage us; we often find ourselves at the worst possible moments of life. When we have others to help us, to guide us, to comfort us, to nurture us, to console us through those rough moments; we can more easily find the direction we want to go. As we find fellowship with other believers, we grow closer to the one true light and path, Jesus Christ, whose blood was freely shed for all. It is this trickle effect, where contact with just one person can make all the difference in helping someone back onto the right track- or perhaps it may be us that needs that guiding nudge of another. We never know when our services of evangelism will successfully activate, however, if we treat one and all as angels unaware…we can make a difference. It may be a simple smile and statement such as “God Bless You” that helps someone make the decision to surrender and jump back on that subway train of life, to a new place in life, in Christ…
It is in Christ that we know that we have the power to overcome those hurts, habits, and hang ups of our lives; knowing that we’re not alone. For as we step back onto the subway train and toward a new place in life, we have others with us to help guide us-our Christian family-and Christ…..AMEN
Survivors Victorious
If you are reading these words, you are a “survivor”; for no matter how rough the road of life may be that you’ve struggled down, you are reading these words today. This day, this hour, this moment was a gift, not a guarantee; yesterday is history. Thus, you survived history-in all it’s challenges and obstacles which hit each of us in varied, and unique ways. Some faced times of pain and suffering, confusion and hardship, frustration and anxiety; today, however, all of us became a survivor.
Having been victim to many of life tumbles, slips, falls, pains, discouragements, and despairs; Christ came before us to reign victorious, so that we may be “victors.” For our battles have already been won, and we live today! Although our lives may seem full of trials and rigors today, we may find peace, guidance, hope and comfort- that even these chains have been broken…that through the blood of Jesus, shed for us….we are survivors who reign “victorious” and stand as living, inspiring testimonies to others….AMEN
MOTHERS
Mothers teach us about maturity: "Eat your vegetables or you’ll never grow up." Mothers teach us about religion: "You better pray that comes out of the carpet." Mothers teach us about time travel: "If you don’t straighten up, I’m going to knock you into the middle of next week!" Mothers teach us about contradictions: "Shut your mouth and eat your dinner!" Mothers teach us about the weather: "It looks like a tornado swept through your room."
When I was a child and our teacher had to be away, we plotted what we were going to do to that substitute teacher! There was something about the idea that we would have her for only one or two days and would likely never see her again. She didn’t know our names, she didn’t know our parents, and, most of all, she didn’t have access to that thing they were always holding over our heads – our “permanent records”. But the next day when the teacher returned, we returned to the appearance of like angels with little horns holding up those halos.
Mothers can be those who gave birth to us, and after nine months of unimaginable pain from simply being a man, said “Enough-get out!” But there are many women who have never been biological mothers, who have never given birth, but have been mothers. Most of us, perhaps, have been assisted along life’s path by a wonderful woman of God in a motherly like fashion. When we’re trying on a new pair of clothes at the retail store and we’re entirely uncoordinated ( men ), generally, there’s a precious woman there to assist us before we walk out looking like we’ve just woken up. When we’re not at our best; in a personal testimony-when I was sick, struggling to physically walk and talk, there were two counselors who helped me in the worst of a time….they were like a mother.
Moms are those women who are worthy of honor, whoever they may be. This type of woman makes a priority of her faith, is a model of dignity and respect, is hard working, shows kindness, and teaches truth amongst many of the other qualities and gifts that makes her special. So to all the mothers, and to all the women, I say thank-you, and God Bless you!
GRAVITY
“If you shoot for the stars, and you miss, at least you will still land amongst the stars”
Gravity is the pull of force that keeps us grounded feet first on this majestic globe we call earth; gravity is the pull of force that pulls the space shuttle back to earth when it slows down for re-entry. Without gravity, we’d all float aimlessly without any particular direction; like a helium balloon swiftly rising and vanishing into the depths of the skies above, tossed about by the currents of the wind in any direction.
Many years ago, rocket men were propelled by the ignition of thousands of pounds of rocket fuel to reach the moon, and as they neared the moon-thousands of miles away from the comforts of Mother Earth, the moons gravity helped to pull them near the lunar surface…their goal. Their reliance wasn’t entirely upon fuel, but of the gravitational forces…the support of an entirely different environment.
We too, find ourselves in similar situations, when we exert our physical forces of life through a wide range of emotional and personal experiences; when we face fear, sadness, happiness, anxiety, nervousness- and all the emotions that one could think of. We each teach what we live, because others see us…children, teenagers, friends, and those in need of help and support. When they are in need, or when we’re in need, we often leave our comfort zones ( like those rocket men leaving earth, shooting for the moon ). Aiming into the unknown, they took a risk; and we too take a risk, but a risk worth taking to better our lives. If we don’t immediately hit our target, we have pastors, families, counselors, case managers, friends, doctors, therapists, and teachers to name a few- who will pull us in the right direction…into the comfort and safety of new gravities and opportunities of life.
Several different times, I personally aimed down rather than up toward the stars, and thank goodness no one followed me…except for the gravitational pull of those who cared, our friends, our teachers, our counselors, our case managers, our therapists. So today, I stand as a survivor to encourage everyone to aim for the stars, and if you miss, at least you still land amongst them…and the many opportunities for new life!
RECOVERY
We are recovering, I am recovering, and we will continue to recover; because if we say that we're not recovering, then we're saying that we having nothing left! To recover is to re-claim, to take-back, or to find; if we had new model car and misplaced the keys, do we not have something to find? When a $2000 refund check arrives in the mail from the IRS, do we not have something to take back into our wallets and hands? When we're sick, do we not want to get well, to recover?
It's easy in moments of despair, in distress; to close the gates that allow us to see into the horizon of our lives and say that there's no way we can make it any further. Perhaps we're afraid, or uncertain of the unknown; for when you look directly upon a flat-planed horizon, you may not see sudden drop offs. Remember the Wile Coyote and Road Runner Show, when ol' Wile Coyote barelled straight ahead and suddenly passed a cliff? He looked back in shock and bewilderment, frozen for moment-defying the logic of gravity, before suddenly dropping. Many times we do the same thing without Christ in the lead, except that we fall more quickly than ol' Wile Coyote!
You see, Christ has conquered everyplace, every situation in which we close the gates to our recovery. Hebrews 13:12 tell us that "Jesus suffered outside the gate in order to sanctify the people through the blood." He crossed boundaries and he suffered; yes, he suffered. No, we don't want to suffer as we recover and step into new horizons; but we have to expect growin pains like those in our muscles, for example. When we begin to stretch and excersize, using muscles we may not have used that often, it hurts; but the pain diminishes as they strengthen and we strengthen physically.
When I gave my life to Christ, the devil tried to knock me down harder and harder with temptations and speed bumps of life; and as I began growing in Christ and flexing those christian muscles, things became easier. I am not ashamed to say that I am recovering from being on the recieving end of sexual abuse and torment, living with effects of post-traumatic stress disorder and anxiety; the memories and feelings are painful everyday. Yes, the pain is there as I work step by step through the hurts; as you work through those tough areas of your personal lives; however, the pain becomes easier as you eventually are able to act as a supportive "bridge" to get across those same valleys......just as Jesus bore the pains upon the cross with outstretched hands, a "bridge", that we can make it safely into new horizons. We are not alone, we are recovering with one another, and with Christ!
SMALL CANDLES OF PEACE
There’s a quote that tells us that “in moments of discouragement, defeat or even despair, there are always certain things to cling to. Little things usually: remembered laughter, the face of a sleeping child, a tree in the wind-in fact, any reminder of something deeply felt or dearly loved. No man is so poor as not to have many of the small candles. When they are lighted, darkness goes away-and a touch of wonder remains.
During a blustery night in December 2007, an ice stork struck while many were in the warm embrace of their quilts and comforters. The next day, many of these same people were lighting up candles; and isn’t it amazing how small candles can light an entire room! I found myself creating shadow puppets, with magnificent clarity upon the walls, which distracted my attention from the elements, courtesy of Mother Nature. Just the smallest candle can produce a large light; when we feel discouraged, defeated or in despair, laughter can provide moments of light in our lives. It takes more muscles to frown than it does to smile!
The ice storm came complete with the cracking of limbs, which made it extremely difficult to enjoy the sound of a tree in the wind; I enjoyed the comfort of a hard hat and hockey face guard!! But once again, in moments of discouragement, sadness, despair, defeat, in grief; taking time to relax our whole body and envision the peacefulness of a sleeping child, can bring us a moment of peace within our hearts.
I spent a year and a half combined on the streets throughout my life; having found sanctuary many times under bridges on a frigid
Snowflakes
There’s a quote which tells us that snowflakes are one of natures most fragile things, but just look what they can do when they stick together. Look at what each flake can do when they stuck together to bring a brief moment of peace in
Each player on a football team is a unique player, but when the players stick together, much can be accomplished, to include an unbeaten season! Each one of us is a unique creation, and fragile if we attempt to face life alone. If we stick together with those in which we can relate with, we can easily become a snowball which smashes through life’s obstacles. When we stick together, we hold the power to reach new heights and new goals, once which were out of reach. In these regards, snowflakes aren’t a bad thing, unless they allow fallen limbs for the monopoly of those who're hired as pick-up-stickers. During the month of December 2007, many Oklahomans played a giant-sized game of pick up sticks, helping fellow neighbors; sticking together like snowflakes to bring about peace, what the color of white symbolizes.
How is peace made perfect in our own personal lives? By creating short term goals-the individual snowflakes-which will in turn fuse, or attach themselves together-making the long term goals a reality. Along life’s path, when the going gets tough, and the tough gets rough; take a many moments to picture a beautiful snowfall of snowflakes, glittering everything around you in a peaceful white. Watch exactly how these snowflakes bond together, to provide even greater beauty. Wives will most definitely tell their husbands to go shovel the pretty blanket of snow; while husbands, you can tell your wives how beautiful the snow really is and that shoveling would ruin the scene. Disclaimer, men, don’t tell your wives I said so before I can head for the warmth of tropical
Peace,
During a winter’s day of January 2008, parts of
I'm reminded of the manna which God provided for the Israelites during their travels in the desert; the manna was a good thing which was provided as sustenance. It was physical nourishment, which fell from the sky, and is described as white in color in the Book of Exodus. The taste varied depending upon who ate it, with it tasting like honey for small children, like bread for youths and oily for the elderly.
Just as the manna provided for physical nourishment, the snow in
JOHN 5:1-9 HEALING
There was a pool called
But the question Jesus asks is an important one that extends deep into the root of every physical and emotional healing….will the receiver use the healing to benefit? Christ is asking the man what his future plans for life are. You see, it felt comforting as a child when mother and father tended to the burn on our hand when we had it too close to the stove top, and we didn’t make the same mistake twice after our hand was healed. A mountianclimber goes to climb
The man wasn’t carried, or placed into the waters, it was an even greater event through Christs healing…..that he took up his mat and walked. "Take up your mat and walk"-healing, and the ability this man had without physical intervention to walk, shows us that we too have potential to overcome. Anything is possible for those who believe, anything which means that there is nothing that is impossible through God and through the blood of Jesus, in which we have life everlasting. Today we are faced with challenges, obstacles, and hardships of many kinds; and noone is immune. Each day it seems that good can quickly turn into bad for us with the blink of an eye. Perhaps we are faced with disability, or recovering from struggles; we too can pick up our mats and tread upon firm, new soil. My personal life saw physical and emotional abuse by my real father in my early twenties, and by a group of druggies in a former town in which I once resided in my late twenties to early thirties. Some of the physical abuse was unfortunately and painfully devastating in the later town in which I resided of twelve years. For the last three of that I did my best to persevere, I did my best through all bitter and horrendous circumstances to stand firm to my church family and friends; but finally read the verses of John 5: 1-9, which I have described above, and picked up my mat. Jesus knocked at the door of my heart and asked me personally, brother to brother, “Tim, my bro, do you want to be healed? And if you do, it’s time to pack your bags, pick up your mat, and leave town!”
I did just that, moving to a new place, and establishing a new life in Christ, and in growth. My days are still filled with pains and anxieties, and I know that there will be hard days to come; but I do know that 38 years from now, my mat will have been moved closer and closer to Jesus. So move your mats today, stop doing whatever it is that is stopping you from healing and growing; don’t stop drinking just to get into a shelter. Stop drinking because you want to see children grow. Don’t stop eating unhealthy just because you want to look like the magazine stars, eat healthy because you care about the body that God has given you. These are just of few of the many ways to start healing and living and growing and having a great time in the Lords name…..May the Peace of the Lord be with you and Heal you this day!
One Penny
I enjoy walking, not only for benefit of the exercise, but it's an opportunity to enjoy the sounds and sights of nature. The nest part of walking is that its free recreation! Often as I stretch the ol' leg muscles, I find myself adding to a collection of pennies that I find along curbs edge. Pennies add up and so, I make it a point to pick up any penny dropped by the wayside; putting them into a jar one I arrive home. It’s amazing at months end, when you really want a soda pop, with little cash before the next pay day-that those pennies can provide a way! Every so often we hear stories in the press of people finding wads of cash or checks inadvertently dropped by their owners, and how it’s successfully returned to the rightful hands. You hardly ever hear in the press, however, of "Mr Joe" who found a penny! Both have value, but on the immediate surface of mind, the wad is of most significance.
I am often touched by the biblical story of the lady who gave the only gift she had of two pennies to the church, while the remaining congregation gave lucrative amounts. This young lady was recognized the most by Jesus; she gave everything she had, while the others most likely had a continued reserve of wealth. Jesus wants us to give our whole life to following in his footsteps, he desires every ounce of everyone; but he won't force himself upon us. We have to make that decision, and often, many people give only part of themselves; similar to bargaining, I'll give up this or that-and then the word "but." I'll give up unhealthy smoking, for example, BUT I'll chew tobacco! I'll give up my life to just during Sunday worship, but not during the week!
If you've ever used the coin sifting machines at supermarkets, which print a redemption receipt for the amount of change you gave up; then you may have had one or two coins rejected because of wear, corrosion, or being gummed up. Perhaps that’s why many people don't pick up pennies, they sometimes have a glaze of crud and dirt-but not always. I've seen a few pennies that've been corroded beyond any future use. For the most part, however, they're in good condition and shiny. Jesus is waiting with much anticipation that we'll pick him up into our lives. Each day that we awaken is a gift from God, and isn't guaranteed. Often we make schedules and plans for seven, fourteen, or twenty one days; what can we do today, however. What if we crossed a street on a protected light and an erratic driver met us head on; what if we suffered from a sudden heart attack; what if the moment of judgment were to occur in five minutes---what is our relationship with God right now?
James 5:1-3 tells us to: come now you rich, weep and howl for your miseries that are coming upon you! Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are moth-eaten. Your gold and silver are corroded, and their corrosion will be a witness against you and will eat your flesh like fire. You have heaped up treasure in the last days.
James 5:5 tells us that: you have lived on the earth in pleasure and luxury; you have fattened your hearts as in a day of slaughter.
I am a grateful believer in Jesus Christ, and I believe in giving unto the Lord, faithfully giving not only in tithes, but of my time to Christ and to the edification of others in Christ through the faith community of believers. What is your relationship with Christ, do you bypass Christ thinking more of what you want rather than what Christ would desire for you. How often do we bypass that solitary penny, thinking that we're rich enough; how often do we neglect involvement in faith in Christ because we think we're strong enough; or that we focus on physical needs and desires rather than spiritual desires.
Focusing on these verses in scripture, I often neglect the winter sweaters in spring and summer; not that I neglect wearing them, but that I didn't protect them from moths. So then what I had saved, for example a mini-vacation, had to be used to get warm sweaters in preparation for autumn and winter months. As a result, my mini-vacation collapsed! I faced a domino effect collapse that happens with many others; when stocks collapse, or a lucrative business is demolished by such elements as ice or tornadoes. We may weep, and weep some more; a loss can be very painful, and the loss can send shock waves through other parts of our lives. When we pass up that penny, that one cent could've made the difference in our utilities being terminated, as an example. I hate to fathom how many people in the world have passed away, without having Christ in their lives, or how many people spend each day without having Christ-instead fattening their hearts with physical wealth and desires, ready to be slaughtered on the Day of Judgment. Are you in the book of life, are you immersed in the spirit of christian love and it's wealth of life?
Bypassing that dropped penny the next time you see one, could be an example of one bypassing Christ; for when you need an extra penny or you need Christ--it may be too late on the day and hour of judgment. It may be too late when a tragedy is presented upon your life...reach out and accept Christ today!
Dear Heavenly Father, you are love, and I love you. You are the beginning and the end. I believe that you sent your only Son, Jesus Christ, that I may be free of the bondage and judgment of sin. You alone make life the best, just like a single solitary penny, you make the difference. Forgive me of my sins, in the name of you son, Jesus Christ; and help me to grow closer to the faith community of believers, and to you and your precious son, Jesus Christ. AMEN
TROUBLES
"For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all" ( 2 Cor 4:17 )
We are like jewels, shaped with the hammer and chisel of adversity; we are like the grand canyon, shaped by thousands of years of wind. Both are beautiful and valuable. We are created in the image of God, we are children of God, and that makes us beautiful. We are called as christians-to be Christ-like-and that makes us a valuable part of evangelism efforts; being able to share in our testimonies and help one another. Just as a minute has 60 seconds, and hour has 60 minutes, and there are 24 hours in a day; so we will also face challenges in many moments of life. Life is a series of problems, every time you solve one, another is waiting to take its place. Not all of them are big, but they're part of Gods master plan for our lives.
God could've kept the three Hebrew men from being thrown into the blazing furnace, but he didn't; ultimately, they were drawn closer to God. They refused to bow down to a golden idol, and as a result were faced with a fiery furnace. Given a chance to bow down again, they refused; one of the Ten Commandments tells us not to worship idols. Upon being thrown into the fiery furnace, bound so that they couldn't move, the king looked in and saw not three men, but four walking around. Who was the fourth? Christ, Our Lord and Savior! God often lets problems happen and every one of those persons was drawn closer to God as a result.
Accidents are just incidents in Gods good plan for us. Trials and tribulations are mere set backs. Romans 8:28-29 tells us that "God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them. For God knew his people in advance and he chose them to become like his Son.
In Romans 8:28-29, the word "everything" tells us that Gods plan for our lives involves all that happens to us-including our mistakes, sins and hurts, illnesses, debt, disasters, divorce and deaths. The phrase "for the good" might raise an eyebrow when we're immediately faced with a demanding and frustrating situation; however God specializes in bringing the good out of it. We may not think having a $200 speeding ticket is working out for our good, but we learned to practice obedience, and others can certainly benefit by knowing in our own testimony how much a ticket will pinch their wallet. As a kid, I spent countless hours and even days in the corner; however, that time served to teach me that there are consequences to mistakes.
In the family tree of Christ, four women are listed: Tamar, Rahab, Ruth and Bathsheba. Tamar seduced her father-in-law to get pregnant. Rahab was a prostitute. Ruth wasn't Jewish and broke the law by marrying a Jewish man. Bethsheba committed adultery with David, resulting in her husbands murder. Not the best of lifestyles, however, God brought good out of bad-Christ came through their lineage.
Everything works for the good for those who love God, and thus, all things work for the bad for those living in opposition to God and want their own way. We may experience loneliness, temptation, stress, criticism, rejection, and many other feelings and / or problems. We're not alone, however, Christ experienced these same problems; and thus, we are ultimately walking with Christ. We are told in the bible that Jesus learned obedience through suffering and was made perfect through suffering.
We are told in scripture to count it our joy when we meet trials of many kinds, which can be rather difficult to do; however, Christ willingly and obediently gave his life for us. Joy doesn't necessarily mean smiling, I assume that Christ didn't smile when faced with crucifixion; joy is, however, knowing that things will work for the best for those who believe. To believe also means to have faith, faith being the assurance of things hoped for and evidence of the things we don't see. Noah obediently built the ark, but then waited over a hundred years before the rains came. For over a hundred years Noah sat on dry land with no water in sight, and I imagine he had a few doubting questions on a slow boat to nowhere, but it did go somewhere as God promised. We believe in faith of the simple things such as sitting in a chair, but how often do we really check to see if it will hold us? Not too often. Those who have a car, how often do we do a "pre-flight inspection" before turning the key; or do we simply crank the ignition in faith that it will start? If we simply have the faith the size of a mustard seed-one of the most smallest seeds; it'll grow into something massive, just as the tree which comes from the mustard seed.
Facing those obstacles and challenges in our daily lives may seem difficult at the time, but when you look back at those times, you may notice how things worked for the good for those who believe. The disciples didn't want Christ to go to the cross, but when he did and rose again from the dead, the disciples realized that there was a purpose in how the events played out. Then, they took that great commission of Christ to "go and make disciples of all nations everywhere, teaching them as Christ has taught. They were a public testimony to Christian ( Christ-like ) love. They used their experiences, challenges, and obstacles to teach others; as we see in so many scripture passages.
Through Christ, anything is possible!
Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for this blessed day you have created for us, as a gift. We're not perfect, and we pray in the name of Jesus, that we may be blessed with new life and we humbly ask forgiveness of all our sins. Breathe into us today new life as we continue forward in our Christian journey of faith, knowing that we will face trials and obstacles; knowing that everything is possible because we believe. AMEN
The Distance.......
To my fellow brothers in Christ; I am resigned to the fact that when we're lost in a big city and we can't make sense of directions on a map, we're lost! To all my sisters in Christ; without you, we would be lost! I'm the worst dealt card when it comes to finding my way around a big city, never mind the small town I'd lived in for close to twelve years. I rely heavily on public transportation, which is a good thing considering the price of fuel; but when I do have to navigate metro streets on my own, I hesitate to guess how many times I have to ask for directions...when I'm going less than five blocks. Once again, I give my thanks to the women!
After twenty or thirty people give me directions to go five blocks, I find my destination; but the five blocks, however, is open to interpretation! What makes the difference is how the direction giver interprets five blocks! I had such great ease many times, after asking directions, that I had three blocks left to go. "Only three blocks east" I was informed. make that three times twenty blocks! "Only two miles west" often equals two times eight miles!
Eventually, I arrive at my destination; although, often late! Then I ponder how this scenario, played over and over again, relates to our spiritual journeys? How many times have we been a "half way" christian? Go to church on bible study night, but not on Sunday; or go to church on Sunday, but hide away what we've learned the rest of the week? Or do a few good deeds and neglect church, thinking that we're in good hands with the "All-Mighty"(God). These are just a few of the misconceptions in the distance of being a christian.
It's not easy being a christian, and often the path seems more difficult after we accept Christ into our lives, than before; the devil works harder to trip us, rather than when we were tricked. Yes, we go to church on Sundays; however being a christian involves showing the christian love and christian spirit to all we encounter. To be a christian is to be "Christ-like" in all we do. Good deeds alone won’t get us to heaven, we must continue to experience times of worship and moments in scripture, to continually edify our lives in Christ. Always remember your roadmap, the bible, and you will always find the right direction.
It's ok to say and pray:
Father, Creator, Comforter, Nurturer and Giver of Life; you gave your only Son, Jesus Christ, to die for my sins, and I accept him into my life and heart today. Father, I thank you for always being willing to accept me back into your arms, when I fall, when I am weak; when I neglected you. I turn my life back to you. AMEN
Deliver Hope…..
As gas prices soar higher than the altitude of a hot air balloon, I feel guiltier when I have a yearning for pizza delivery. If I were a delivery driver, I would be expecting a tip of mammoth proportions, or I’d eat the pizza myself! Now that I mention that, I never did pizza delivery; but in my time as a food service worker, there were many paychecks that I would literally eat away. One restraunt in particular, offered a food bill for the food we ate, of which we would pay after we got paid; and thus, sometimes, I didn’t get to see my pay!
If someone told us today that we could deliver for free, and find joy in it, would we jump with leaps and bounds for that job? Imagine doing delivery with no fuel cost, with a benefit to everybody! I have connections to a big boss, who has given me permission to divulge trade secrets! His name is Father; but he also goes by, Creator and Author of Life. Many know him as simply God. He has a 24 hour hotline, known as prayer. He’s available anywhere, at anytime; and he wants to recruit as many people as he can for a wonderful and rewarding job. The only qualifications are that: you believe in God, you believe in Christ, and you believe that Christ died for your sins!
Just as a pizza company delivers pizza, we can deliver hope! I have an appetite for the fruits this job, and there are some awesome benefits. We are on-call 24 hours a day, ready to deliver hope to those in need. Our job doesn’t end at the church doors; when we leave our places of worship, whether it be in a church building or in a park, we are entering a mission field of mammoth proportions within our own communities. Our job is to deliver Christian love to everyone around us; our job is to show others a mirror image of who Christ is. In this job, each job duty may be different; some can preach well to an audience, some can write well for others to read, and some can do a fantastic job cleaning a sanctuary to make worship a comfortable and rewarding experience. One of my first jobs as a Christian within the church, was to clean the bathrooms; everybody starts somewhere, but it’s for the edification of the church no matter what. We are all equal, in that we all have one mission, to deliver hope to those in need of a better way. The one light, one truth, one way……Jesus. Will you accept the job offer today?
ON CALL FOR THE CALL.........
When we hear the term "mission field", it's very easy to think of the lands of
I am reminded of a hospital doctor, who often is "on call", meaning to be available when needed. When we're ill, when we need a doctor, we truly want a doctor to be available in the here and now! When it seems that our days and nights are in shambles, when we need comfort and guidance; our family doctor is on call. The doctor is available to everyone at anytime; no waiting lines, no need to make an appointment-no insurance, no problem! In fact, this doctor doesn't worry about HMO or PPO; our insurance was signed, dated and approved on the cross by Jesus. There is however, a questionnaire! The good news is that it's not 30 pages long; do you believe in God, do you believe in Christ, and that he died for your sins, and do you take him as your personal Lord and Savior? Our doctor is God, and he's available today.
After Jesus rose from the dead on the third day, and before he ascended into heaven; his commission to us is to "go into all nations, everywhere, teaching others as he has taught us." Going into all nations doesn't necessarily mean going into foreign nations, although we as christians should support that endeavor. When missionaries go into foreign lands, they are going into new places, a whole new culture. When many people hear the word "church", they may immediately think of a building; when in reality, the church is "the people." When we leave our church gathering each Sunday, Tuesday, Wednesday-or whenever; we are going into a mission field-within our own communities. There are countless men, women, children and families that don't know the "one way, one truth, one light"-Jesus; and it's our job to leave behind the comforts of our own homes, our ways of life, to reach out to others.
In a personal experience, I found a home in the south end of a town known as the "ville"; which is predominantly black. I believe that all are equal, we were all created in Gods image, and therefore-color doesn't matter. The "ville" contains many properties that are older, but home is what we make it. The factors including race and old properties, have created a stereotype that shouldn't be that. The stereotype is that the "ville" is a bad place, and after nearly 3 years of living in the "ville", I don't understand the stereotype; other than knowing that perhaps others are afraid to cross into new territory than what they're accustomed to. Many people are afraid of change, to venture into new waters; but we too are "on call" for God. I found the "ville" a blessed place to live, and met many friends that I otherwise wouldn't have known; and have attempted to help turn others in this area to know the christian kind of love, that they may otherwise may never have known. We are "on call" for Gods call-and God is "on call" for us! The insurance coverage is great- it was the blood of Our Precious Lord and Savior that can wipe away all our sins-if we simply make the call and then be prepared to take many calls---so "go therefore and make disciples of all nations, everywhere, teaching them what Christ has taught us".......
PSALM 5
" I will praise the Lord according to his righteousness; and will sing praise to the name of the Lord most high"
Often times we feel obliged to sing and give choruses of praise within church as we're within the four walls of the sanctuary and everyone else is doing the same thing; or when we're enjoying the fun and fellowship of a church retreat or camp. Once we return to our daily lives within schools, work or at play, we tend to become lost in the everyday ups and downs. How often do we praise our Father for the obstacles and challenges we face; as they may bring around change in our lives.
We're in a constant process of change...from the simple existence that each day we ago-to our social and maturity level. Our Father, Our Creator, Our Light, Our Guide, Our Redeemer, who has unconditional love for each and every person, is there for us everyday. Through our ups and downs, Our Creator, Our Lord continues to be there for us. As we face uncertainty, he remains faithful to our lives, and to mankind. Why then, do we praise Our Lord in the joyous moments, and not in the sad.
Our Father is righteous and ever-present...we are a child of God. God is Our Father. Heaven, a work and blessing of his Holy Hands, is our home. Each day is a day closer to Heaven. Our Savior, Our Brother, each Christian is our brother too.
Knowing that we'd see those less desirable days and stressful moments, from the very beginning, Our Father gave us the promise of eternal life. Our hope of eternal life rests in Jesus, Our Lord and Savior, Gods only Son given up for us. Given to heal mankind suffering, including strife, violence, warfare, aggravation, poverty and disease so that we may find peace and eternal life in Heaven.
PSALM 16
" Thou wilt shew me the path of life, in thy presence is fullness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore"
When we're happy about something, perhaps going to the amusement park or unwrapping that most desired Christmas gift, our faces light up with glee. However, when all is said and done, our happiness lasts only a short time...then, what are we feeling? Joy is everlasting...when we attend a church retreat or spiritual function which lifts our hearts, we're happy and ecstatic; however, we return to our communities in its mass of ups and downs...can we find joy in knowing that we've served our Lord and continue to do so?
Our Father shows us the path of life; the Blessed Cross on which Our Savior laid for our sins and the salvation and redemption of our hearts and souls when we naturally fall short as human beings. Forgiveness, a happy, enlightening and lifting act of grace at the time...a joyous thing of our lives as we realize Our Fathers everlasting and unconditional love for us, everlasting grace and peace.
At the right hand...at Our Creators hand which shaped the very existence of our lives and all that is around us, there is hope and salvation-life everlasting. Through Our Heavenly Father and Blessed Savior alone.
PROVERBS 20:24
" Since the Lord is directing our steps, why try to understand everything that happens along the way"
When I took a train ride with my mother and father, I noticed that the train never stopped until we had arrived home...it used to worry me, because we always had to stop in our car for stoplights, stop signs, yield signs, and other cars who had their lights on.
I worried why the train never stopped like the car. You see, there were so many different things that made me wonder and worry...but I didn't have to. God is different from us; there are many things that happen in our lives and we wonder and worry-but God has our life planned. He knows the number of hairs on your head, how many times your heart has beat...he knows everything about us, and loves us.
Remember tearing a piece of paper and it wouldn't heal like a cut on your finger. God loves us and wants the best in us all. Keep moving forward when things don't go right....let your faith flow with him.
I remember seeing my grandmother who was very sick, and the next time I wanted to see her, God had taken her home. I prayed and asked God why...but then I realized, I had the chance to see her before she went home. He had blessed me with an opportunity I didn't see at first. Our Father works in wonderful and mysterious ways....let your faith flow with him....
PROVERBS 10:25
"Disaster strikes like a cyclone and the wicked are whirled away. But the good man has a strong anchor"
Picture yourself on a ship in the warm oceanic waters, miles from any sight of land, the waters are deep and begin buffering your temporary home. You've gathered news of a nasty hurricane barreling toward your ship, chances of reaching land are bleak; what are you possibly going to do? Panic seems to be the perfect solution, but that’s only after the ships sinking. Let down the anchor into the foundation of the seabed, and as the storm makes its pass, you might rock back and forth quite a bit, but you'll be ok.
We're going to face problems in our lives. Just as you wake up each day after a nights rest, refreshed and prepared. If you think nothing will ever happen in your life, you're walking in a bed of roses with no foot protection...you're going to get scratched by the thorns. So anchor yourself and your heart in Jesus...when those trials and tribulations seem to erupt, you'll be standing strong. God will make a way.
PROVERBS 12:28
"The path of the godly leads to life. So why fear death"
When I die, whenever that day may come-preferably by the natural causes...I'm ready to go. Remember when you were a kid and the family was to visit that great amusement park with the tall slides interlacing one another, and the giant swings and other assorted rides with their ups and downs...you were excited because you knew what was awaiting you.
Those who believe in the power of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and what he did for us and how God works in our life...through thick and thin...their home is in Heaven for eternity. If you go to sleep this night knowing that you've done your best in the day past to serve God, and for some reason unknown to you or anyone else, the last breath comes....say hello to Heaven for me! If you haven't done as well as you should've...if you slipped and slide...or if you haven't asked Jesus into your heart...Pray:
Dear Jesus...I ask you to come into my heart and soul and forgive my sins both large and small. You died on the Holy Cross for my sins, with your light-I want to spread this into our community...to my friends and those in need. Help me, Dear Jesus to steer away from sin and live a life for you.
PROVERBS 25:14
"One who doesn't give the gift he promised is like a cloud blowing over the desert without dropping any rain"
We've all seen movies of life in a desert somewhere, scorching hot and bone dry, with no hint of moisture in the sky. The glowing sun strains even the strong across the vast open space across sizzling sands. A lone tumble-weed stands where life once flourished, this land is inhospitable and barren. Or perhaps you've seen pictures of the starving children in
Envision yourself in one of those situations...and as you're trying to survive and struggle through the day, a dark storm cloud looms in the distance, growing ever stronger with vivid flashes of lightning and sharp rolls of thunder. At last, refreshing water is on the way, so you think; but as the storm barrels closer and closer---there is nothing! Your heart races as you expect cool refreshing rainwater to heal your thirst, and eventually the storm appears directly overhead. "Let the rain pour" you cry with all your heart. "Where's the rain" you ponder? And as the storm passes over and then on into the distance, your heart tumbles.
It is easy to get caught up in life’s temptations that can steer us away from our eternal home in Heaven. Today, and everyday, continually praise God for the life he has given you...so that when the time comes for us all to go see daddy in Heaven, you won't be passed over.
IS WHAT YOU ARE ABOUT TO DO BRINGING YOU CLOSER TO YOUR GOAL?
Have I read the bible today? Have I tried my best at everything I did today? Did I pray?
PROVERBS 28:19
"Hard work brings prosperity; playing around brings poverty"
I've heard it many times..."I slept in-I couldn't make it for church" or "I have work here-there, I can't make it to church." Once or twice, is understandable. But when it's a constant thing, just because someone’s too lazy...you're not working for God in that moment. We're working for God, we're not working for McDonalds. I finally took a stand on life when my work in food service became restrictive of flexibility in the work schedules, which would've hurt my attendance at the church Family Night Services. God is first. If you sleep away a perfect one or two hours of opportunity to hear the word of God and perhaps a chance to change a flaw in your life....you're going to start falling spiritually and become as poor as if you didn't have a job. Without God in your life, you have nothing...a person whom has not a penny to his name but has the Lord is much richer that one will ever dream.
PROVERBS 13:7
There are so many lotteries in our beautiful country today...scratch offs, dollar bill serial numbers, pick one number-pick them all. They all offer eye catching incentives-free phone minutes, a chance for a free car, free fast food meals...almost like an unresistable magnet; and then, there’s bingo, keno, and the list goes on. People are out to win money...and has someone ever told you what they'd do in they won the million dollar jackpot? Or perhaps you've dreamed of a new car, mansion, no more work-early retirement...
We probably all have these dreams, it feels good to enter our fantasy world from time to time...but if I actually won the lottery, I wouldn't want anything extravagant....here’s a story...
I felt the arctic chill down my collar one blustery afternoon shortly before the holidays...I was bundled and bundled under layers of sweaters and coats-but "Old Man Winter" made his presence known! Ice was collecting on puddles and the radiant sun providing little warmth quickly disappeared behind the dense clouds filling in. "What a night for a fire and hot cocoa" I exclaimed. Passing a local department store, I noticed a gentleman holding a sign printed on "I work for food and shelter"....With a million dollar winning, I would provide a place for the less fortunate; for those that needed shelter and a warm meal, a place of comfort and Gods great Peace. With a lottery winning, I would put together "Meals on Wheels" programs not just in my community...but in all communities. I would get a car; a car that said..."Delivering Home to those that need a Home" written along side-and loaded full of clothing and health supplies, bibles, you name it...all from the lottery winning, if I won.....
Teen pregnancy and broken families with displaced youngsters has been a growing problem in our society; one month old babies found in dumpsters barely breathing and affected by natures elements and lack of nourishment really hurt me when you hear about them. If I won the lottery...our communities would see warmer, caring facilities to take these young ones in..I'd perhaps even open my house to a VERY VERY large family.....
I wouldn't want anything for myself...you see, I 've got everything I'll ever need; I've got our Lord and Savior Jesus in my heart, and I enjoy the sounds and scenery of our Heavenly Fathers creation.....which spread out into the horizon before us. Sometimes the monetary wealthy tend to focus on the fourth car they could really use or the extravagant mansion with twenty rooms and an olympic sized swimming pool, fancy furniture and long luxurious vacations. Money gives some false sense of security that they have everything...they get too wound up in "What do I want, What do I want?" and they forget about "What do I need, What can I give?"
I was homeless for a time on the streets of
Remember when someone walked up behind you and did something that made you jump, and your heart raced a thousand times because you weren't expecting it? When God decides that it is time for us to all go home-it will happen quickly....are we going to be ready? You're not going to be able to take with you to Heaven the physical riches and possessions of the world here today....Are you ready? Do you help others in need, as the bible tells us to do? Is your heart open to God-or is it invisible and open to the valuable possessions which give you a moment of happiness..sheer moments in lives of physical happiness...Happiness with Our God is Eternal.
EARTH TOGETHER.....
When you look up into space at night at the multitude of stars and vast deep spare around us, or when you watch programs that in some way illustrate our globe-you realize that we're all sharing this planet together. At the present day in age, we have still no other planet to resort to when our own planet is eventually destroyed through carelessness of our civilization.
If this sounds like a protest- it's against strife and violence that has plagued our environments. What will countries fight over when the world’s supply of oil has gone bust? Gangs and warfare-fighting and killing over territory...we share this planet together-and when our land is eventually destroyed and contaminated and polluted beyond repair, we'll cry together...
This is little effect in the entire population-but if more and more felt the same and realized where they were, the world would definitely be a better place.
FOOTSTEPS.....
As a child, I took after my father’s footsteps, and I think I learned quite a few valuable lessons in my journeys at his side. A tribute to him is the direction I want to go in life, from my visions of education to my life for God.
As a father and son quest, we used to go garbage picking...Treasure hunting. we used to get peculiar glimpses as we clambered over the sides of trash dumpsters in anticipation of that lonely appliance, whose life was cut short. Unquestionably, we wore our father and son spirit-even if we didn't find the tattered broomstick with which to construct the skeleton of a future kite or clubhouse. But one day- it occurred; as I ventured from the house on the happiness and exploration which became so devotional....the treasure, the artifact, the prize possession which would sit atop our living room wall-unit.
It was, with thirty some gadgets and buttons, a set of numbers reading horizontally, and a coat of silver with two boxes strung along either side.....a...Stereo! My father and I hurriedly carried its weight home after heralding the great news to him with all my lungs; and plugging it into the socket...."ZIP-POP-BANG-BOOM!"..........we asked ourselves who turned on the dark. We once again tried and tried as we reset the circuits in the house, to turn the lights on again....and still...NOTHING. We were about to return this contraption to its last known domain, until my father visited a local stereo retail outlet.
"Well sir....looks like you need a new antenna fixture here and there...."
And so, with a $50 installation of a new internal antenna, our new-found $500 stereo system was once again receiving signals from the wide spectrum of news talk and musical variations. What we were once going to look at and forget because of a minor defect, in contrast, livened up our lives.
Having lived on the streets of several communities including the busy avenues of
When someone enters our church home with a different set of beliefs, or no beliefs at all...we don't say " Nope, you're not like us, you can't be here"......we take one and all into our churches warm fellowship and care and touch them with the guiding word of our Heavenly father. Just as the stereo, which we thought wouldn't do a thing...we gave it a chance and it has fit well into the years of our lives. That individual who we brought to know Our Savior and Lord Jesus, they may in turn provide a function to our church that we needed.
We can't afford to be selective...each person under God is equal....we all have a chance; even as we may slip-Jesus provided a way. By being selective, we may miss out on something valuable we may not have known or learned otherwise.
DEAR FATHER......THANKYOU FOR EACH ONE OF US...UNIQUE WITH QUALITIES BLESSED BY YOUR TOUCH. THANKYOU FOR THE GUIDANCE IN OUR LIVES, AND FOR WATCHING OVER US IN BOTH THE THICK AND THIN OF OUR LIVES AS WE STRIVE FOR OUR DREAMS AND ASPIRATIONS.
( THE GREAT COMMISSION )
It was the great commission of Christ to us, before he ascended into heaven; to "go, and make disciples of all nations, everywhere....teaching them as he taught us." It was the great commission that drives every missionary to go into foreign lands, bringing with them the word of God. Even to those who haven't gone on a mission trip, we are still missionaries; for we bring Gods word into our communities. Going into all nations and all lands has many meanings; for example, going beneath a bridge to talk with a homeless person...it means going out of your way. You see, many people become too complacent with their ways of life, for example, those who are materially rich-driving fancy cars, living in fancy homes. When I lived on the streets, many people would turn their backs the other way; when in reality, anybody could be an angel unaware.
Going into all lands and all nations means crossing the lines of prejudice ( black and white ); it means taking a step of faith forward into new avenues of life in order to spread Gods word. It means being willing to share in moments with others regardless of lifestyle, to help a fellow man-or woman. It means sacrificing something we're used to, to help somebody; knowing that God will supply all of our needs. We may not live in a fancy home, or wear fancy clothes, or drive fancy vehicles or eat scrumptious plates of roast duck with cabbage and a side of caviar every night; but we do have the Lord in our hearts. We have a great Creator, Nurturer, a great guide, a great teacher, a great Daddy-we have a great comforter-for when we go forth into "all lands and nations everywhere"---so Lord: BLESS OUR HOMES AND OUR LIVES AND OUR HEARTS, THAT WE MAY BE FILLED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT AS WE GO FORTH TO SPREAD YOUR AWESOME WORD INTO ALL LANDS AND ALL NATIONS EVERYWHERE. BREATHE IN IS A NEW BREATH OF LIFE, THAT WE MAY HAVE GREATER STRENGTH TO REACH OUT INTO ALL COMMUNITIES AND WALKS OF LIFE, TO BE A BLESSING TO THOSE THAT NEED YOUR WORD IN THEIR LIVES.
( Gods Will-All Over the Land )-----------------------------Praise be to God
I'm amazed by the fact that I can heave a paper airplane skyward, only to see it plummet back to the ground in a crinkled lump; but at the same time, a tube of metal with wings attached, can stay aloft. I didn't mention that I had failed "oregami" in art class, and that my paper airplanes more closely resembled a sock after a doberman got through with it; but I don't think that's the answer to the question that perplexes me.
You see, long before the advent of aviation as we know it today, long before the Model T car was invented and long-long ago before the advent of computers...these things were still in existence, but in Gods master plan for us. It took someone the gift of wisdom, from God, to bring us to where we are today. God knew even before our great-great and great-great-great parents came along, that we would have the amenities we have today. He's waiting for us to pray for the wisdom to take what he's given us, and convert it into something that can carry out the commission of Christ..."to go into all lands, making disciples"....
What a better way to go into all the lands and nations, than through the use of the internet that can cross all borders without us physically being there. There are some nations that have banned bibles; "thank God for the men that had the wisdom to create a computer and the internet---we can reach those people." In almost everything that’s been created, there has been abuse; but if we pray to God and seek Gods will and direction in life, and the tools he's given to us...we can more effectively reach out to others in accordance with Gods plan.
He knows the number of hairs on our heads, and he knew before we were even born! He knows the number of stars in the night sky; something astronomers are still trying to do in our own solar system alone-but a feat that they still can’t do. They can guess a number, but God knows the exact number. Our God is an awesome God!
My prayer is that everyone, in every nation, everywhere can come to know God, and that as our christian communities grow; Gods wisdom will. further embrace us, making this world a better place.
