Me and My Big Mouth by Joyce Meyer

Joyce Meyer's Me and My Big Mouth is as honest and forward as it's title with its aim to discuss a stand out part of every person's body. However, it is not the anatomy of our mouths that the book picks out. Instead, it focuses on the power that our mouths have, the power of speech. A lot of us have been in serious trouble because of the words that came out of our mouths. A lot of people have hurt others with the sharpness in their words. And it is also through our big mouths that most of us are slowly diverting away from the path that was originally chosen by God for us.

Meyer states that one of the biggest problems that most Christians face now is that they could not take hold of their thoughts. Her book does not actually discusses the things we say, but more on what goes on behind the things that we say. The tongues in our mouths are not independent and have no way of forming words on their own, instead it is our minds that push them to do so. And what Meyer suggests for us to do is to get grasp our thoughts in order to get hold of our words.

Me and My Big Mouth starts off by Meyer talking about "Learning to Speak God's Language". She discusses the effect of language in constructing meanings. She also uses the phrase 'Are you talking ABOUT your mountains or TO your mountains?' to show how things can have completely different meanings even just by altering even a small portion on the text. In the next chapter, the book also talks about how we can never really live a positive life if we don't let go of our negative thoughts.

The context of the entire book is not something that is purely original. A lot of books have already been written to tell us it should be us taking control of our thoughts and not the other way around. Then again, Me and My Big Mouth is equipped with an additional element: God. She states that although we were designed to be able to generate our own set of thoughts, the only way that we can only find the path to God is that if we are willing to shape them according to His.

It is not only when we are socializing or meeting new friends that we should look after our words, it is on every single moment that we live. Me and My Big Mouth is definitely a must read, especially if you know you yourself could not really control the way you formulate your own thoughts. Don't forget that the mind is the most powerful tool. If you pursue on relying on your own thoughts and refuse to incline them towards the thoughts of God, then you are not fully living on the path of wisdom. Let Meyer give you a hand with Me and My Big Mouth.
