Service Dogs play a Vital role for Americans with Disabilities
Service Dogs perform various types of services to help with the quality of life, freedoms, and dignity of persons with physical and psychological disabilities. Many individuals would not be able to live alone or do normal activities that many of us take for granted if it weren't for Service Dogs and the multiple laws in place to support them.

Service Dogs Are Unique
Most people immediate picture a laborador assisting a sight impaired person. However, not all person's disabilities are visible to the public, such as seizers, hearing impairment, psychological, social disabilities, etc. and therefore it is not proper to ask what it is either. Also, Service Dogs come in all types of sizes and breeds to assist their particular need, i.e., Chihuahuas, Pomeranians, American Pit Bull Terriers, etc.  Service Dogs also perform other services, such as medical alerts, balance dogs, hearing dogs, etc.  There are even Service Monkeys and Service Miniature Horses that are used as Service Animals as well!  American Pit Bull Terriers are great dogs for multiple services and excel in mobility assistance.

Requirements of Service Dogs
There is a stringent evaluation criteria that dogs must pass to be accepted into a two year Service Dog training program consisting of numerous formal training courses and field experience.  The test considers such items a dog's temperament, social skills, intelligences, and suitability for the tasks needed.  There is a significant financial and time investment to graduate a Service Dog.  Service Dogs are working dogs and not just pets.  Many Service Dogs are trained through an official agency with their owners and do not have to give the dog up to someone else.
