Gamesday 2010 Is Is Worth Going?

Posted on July 12, 2010 at 8:35 AM

Hello everyone LTP here, as Gamesday is getting closer and closer I thought I would do a review to highlight the pros and cons of Games Workshops biggest event of the year.

It was my first time at Gamesday last year. I am a painter and as such I didn’t really pay much attention to the gaming side of the day, however, this year Games workshop have announced some mega battles for various systems.

  • Island of Blood – With the update of Warhammer Fantasy GW have arranged a 12’by 18’ gaming area where various stores will take part in a huge battle.
  • Battle for Osgiliath – This is hyped to be the biggest, anyone participate War of the Ring game ever. Placed on a 12’ by 12’ area.
  • No doubt there will also be a Warhammer 40k battle to but they have not released anything yet

Moving onto the sales hall. In here we have various stalls:

  • The Forgeworld stall: My favourite by far as it normally has promotional offers and most of the stuff you want in stock, unless you go after 12 then don’t bother.
  •  Centre GW stall: Pretty much all GW products including direct models which is great. Bargain Stall: This is where they sell GW paints, books, models for £1 they also do boxes of blisters for dirt cheap but I didn’t get there in time to get one.
  • Book Stalls: This area sells artwork and novels from the black library. I picked up 3 limited edition novels last time and had Dan Abnett sign one of them.

Also in this hall are the artists and authors to do signings and the food court is opposite, I would suggest making some butties and taking munchies with you as the food court is a rip off.

In between the sales hall and the golden daemon/ painting hall are the game demos. This was cool as you got to check out and play test some of the new gaming software and also watch some promo videos of upcoming GW stuff.

Finally we move onto my favourite part, the painting hall. This included the famous golden daemon displays (awesome!). If you are entering GD then the doors opens at 0900 so you can get in early and enter your models.

This hall also has:

Artwork section

Greens/sculpting section (with the sculptors)

How they mould the models

Also the Eavy Metal team (I spent ages with those guys), Eavy metal showcase, some giant displays and the recruiting and competition stalls.

Cons:

  • There is no organised queuing system which is a right pain.
  • The food costs a fortune.
  • Some people there do not wash and therefore there is allot of BO going around which totally put me off.
  •  If you are only going to enter in GD then take something else to do because waiting around until 1600 is a long and boring wait.
  •  If you drive then go in your own car because waiting for lost kids to get back on the bus is not fun.

Pros:

  • The stalls are good if you can get to the front of them (might even get a titan this year)
  •  The GD display is awesome and for the painters and modellers out there the hobbies hall is full of resources.
  • You get a free model with your ticket that you can sell on eBay later for more money ha-ha.

Overall I thought it was a good day out and I enjoyed myself. I think I will go again this year if not only to meet up with a few people.
