Thinking of Changing Paints?

Posted on July 16, 2010 at 6:00 AM Comments comments (0)

Hey there.

I have had a few people ask which paints are the best to use. Personally I like both GW and Vallejo paints. What is so good about Vallejo paints?

  • Better Value for money as you get more in each bottle.
  • Huge selection of colour and different ranges to choose from depending on what you are painting.
  • Highly Pigmented
  • Water based and easier to clean of your brushes
  • Awesome bottle design so you don't waste any paint.

Previous models i have bought from Knight have been all metal. These new ones are part metal, part resin which is great because it should make it easier to assemble.

Reaver Titan - A Complete Walkthrough Part1

Posted on July 12, 2010 at 12:58 PM Comments comments (0)

Hey there,

Recently I started taking on commissions and I was contacted by NocturnalK who inquired as to whether I could paint his Forgeworld Reaver Titan for him.

I suppose some people are thinking what is a Reaver Titan?

This model stands between 14 and 16″ tall and can be equipped with a variety of weapons. It can be found here on the Forgeworld website it is made out of resin and comes unassembled and in a large amount of parts.

This, as you can imagine is a big task and not many people like to take it on but I’m always up for a challenge and jumped at the chance to paint this wonderful model.

As this model costs so much you don’t really see many of them around and that is why I want to do this Series so that you can all have a good look at the fine detail and craftsmanship that is put into it.

In this series of articles I hope to show you my process of assembling and painting the model and provide tips and helpful advice at certain points that I found difficult in order to help you if you decide to buy one .

Let’s get started.

LTP

Part 1 – Unboxing and Identifying the Parts

This is the well packaged box I received in the post containing the parts for the model:

As you can see there are many bags of parts and also included are instructions and a COA.

The bags are arranged by positions on the model. For example the legs are contained in 1 bag, the torso parts in another etc.

The next part of my plan was to check all the parts were there and to check for damage and warping. This is important as you don’t want to be finding out you have a part missing near the end or likewise finding a damaged part. It also helps you to familiarize yourself with the parts which make assembly easier later on.

Following the pictures on the checklists, this is how I sorted out all the pieces:

After laying the pieces out and checking them off, I split the parts in two (one for each leg) and place the smaller and larger parts in a bag each. I did this to help me later on so I didn’t end up spending ages finding the bits I wanted.

These are the 3 weapons for this titan:

Finally here are all the parts back in the bags sorted into sections and ready to be cleaned.

Unboxing the model was great and I didn’t realize just how many parts there were. Looking at the level of work that has gone into the sculpt and the material used to make it I can begin to understand why Forgeworld charge so much for it.

During the project I noted down the time that I spent on each part which I will share with you on every part.

Time Scale:

Checking and sorting parts:  30 Minutes

Coming up in Part 2 …  Cleaning the parts.

FOr the rest of this series head over to the reaver titan page on the menu.

Gamesday 2010 Is Is Worth Going?

Posted on July 12, 2010 at 8:35 AM Comments comments (1)

Hello everyone LTP here, as Gamesday is getting closer and closer I thought I would do a review to highlight the pros and cons of Games Workshops biggest event of the year.

It was my first time at Gamesday last year. I am a painter and as such I didn’t really pay much attention to the gaming side of the day, however, this year Games workshop have announced some mega battles for various systems.

  • Island of Blood – With the update of Warhammer Fantasy GW have arranged a 12’by 18’ gaming area where various stores will take part in a huge battle.
  • Battle for Osgiliath – This is hyped to be the biggest, anyone participate War of the Ring game ever. Placed on a 12’ by 12’ area.
  • No doubt there will also be a Warhammer 40k battle to but they have not released anything yet

Moving onto the sales hall. In here we have various stalls:

  • The Forgeworld stall: My favourite by far as it normally has promotional offers and most of the stuff you want in stock, unless you go after 12 then don’t bother.
  •  Centre GW stall: Pretty much all GW products including direct models which is great. Bargain Stall: This is where they sell GW paints, books, models for £1 they also do boxes of blisters for dirt cheap but I didn’t get there in time to get one.
  • Book Stalls: This area sells artwork and novels from the black library. I picked up 3 limited edition novels last time and had Dan Abnett sign one of them.

Also in this hall are the artists and authors to do signings and the food court is opposite, I would suggest making some butties and taking munchies with you as the food court is a rip off.

In between the sales hall and the golden daemon/ painting hall are the game demos. This was cool as you got to check out and play test some of the new gaming software and also watch some promo videos of upcoming GW stuff.

Finally we move onto my favourite part, the painting hall. This included the famous golden daemon displays (awesome!). If you are entering GD then the doors opens at 0900 so you can get in early and enter your models.

This hall also has:

Artwork section

Greens/sculpting section (with the sculptors)

How they mould the models

Also the Eavy Metal team (I spent ages with those guys), Eavy metal showcase, some giant displays and the recruiting and competition stalls.

Cons:

  • There is no organised queuing system which is a right pain.
  • The food costs a fortune.
  • Some people there do not wash and therefore there is allot of BO going around which totally put me off.
  •  If you are only going to enter in GD then take something else to do because waiting around until 1600 is a long and boring wait.
  •  If you drive then go in your own car because waiting for lost kids to get back on the bus is not fun.

Pros:

  • The stalls are good if you can get to the front of them (might even get a titan this year)
  •  The GD display is awesome and for the painters and modellers out there the hobbies hall is full of resources.
  • You get a free model with your ticket that you can sell on eBay later for more money ha-ha.

Overall I thought it was a good day out and I enjoyed myself. I think I will go again this year if not only to meet up with a few people.

Battlefoam Review

Posted on July 12, 2010 at 8:19 AM Comments comments (0)

Hi there. This article is my review of the Battlefoam case and trays I have purchased.

Firstly why spend all that money on Battlefoam when you can get GW cases?

These are my reasons:

  • The foam in the GW cases is not of very good quality
  • If I stood my case up when I opened it there would be models that had fallen down the sides of the foam. This is due to the case been larger than the foam trays.
  • The cases I think are bulky, heavy and awkward to carry.

I received my weekly Wayland Games Newsletter and it said that they had become the distributer for Battlefoam products here in the UK.

As the cases and foam can be pricey, at first I only purchased the P.A.C.K 216 with the GW paint and tool foam load out. This cost me around £60 and this is what you get (note tools, paints and models are mine):

As you can see on the photo I have marked all the great points about the case. The modular zip system is where the case can be attached to some of the other Battlefoam cases which is great if you want to take some models and some paints, rather than having to take all you models and paints.

So lets open this case up.

Before we even get to the first tray we have a 24 spaced paint brush holder on the underneath of the lid. I put my paintbrushes and modelling tools in here and they are totally protected.

Moving onto the trays. These trays are fantastic. The foam is 10 times tougher than GW’s and the bottom is reinforced to prevent bending. The spaces are preshaped to give you the most secure fit.

Tray 1 Tools:

This tray has enough space for the majority of GW tools. The only thing I wish it had is a proper space for a couple of basing material pots, as I have just put them in a spare space.

Tray 2 Paints:

This tray is awesome. The paints fit in so well that i turned the tray upside down and none fell out.

You can fit 50 paints in this tray alone.

Tray 3 Paints:

You get another paint tray so that 100 paints all together! As you can see I have even used the extra spaces for some models.

Your probably thinking I don’t use GW paints? Well not to worry because they also do trays for Vallejo and P3 paints.

I was so happy with the case that I was confident enough in the product to buy some model trays and cases. The cases I haven’t received yet but I have some of the trays.

Again the trays are precut and really sturdy. I love the devilfish tray and they do so many different varieties available on the Battlefoam website or over on Wayland Games.

If they don’t have what you want you can actually create your own trays and they will make them for you.

Overall a fantastic product and well worth spending the extra money to protect your favourite and well painted models.
