doubleday field- myth says that it was ont his hoistoric ground
that Adner doubleday myth traces its roots to 1889 at
Delmonicos restaurant in new york city. At a dinner honoring
the game star players ,league executive A.G. MILLS
proclaimed amidst ear-shattering applause that research had
established baseball to be of american origin.
when Doubleday story was released, true historians took
issue. After a decade of debate ,Mills convened a blue -ribbon
commission including two U.S.senators to investigate the matter.
Despite its flasehood, the commission published a report confirming
the Doubleday myth. With Doubleday long since dead. The only
evidence was the testimony of one elderly man.Why did A.G. Mills
pick a man named Adner Doubleday? Mills and Doubleday were
soldies together in the civil war
CARD 1
The myth that one crisp spring day in 1839 in cooperstown, new york ,
Abner Doubleday took a squad of 20 boys playing a disorganized
fieldgame and divided them into teams. He then laid out four bases,
a six-foot ring for a pitcher, and basic rules for scoring and making outs.
He called the game ''Base-ball''. Currently know as Doubleday Field, the
hallowed grounds where this historic event took place are considered
the brithplace of baseball .
The most startling fact of this story is its complete falsehood.
None of Doubleday"s memoirs ever mentioned the game and in 1839
Doubleday was a student at West Point . The myth was generated as
a patriotic publicity move by baseball magnates of the early era.Perhaps the
biggiest reason for myth"s success was the extreme passion for the game
felt by Americans in the early days
