Zion-Benton breezed by Lane Tech to finish 5-0 and capture the Lane Tech Thanksgiving Tournament title. The Zee-Bees were hot from outside all night, as they jumped out to an early 22-5 lead, and connected on 12 three’s en route to winning the game 72-54.
“Coming into the tournament I didn’t think we would go 5-0,” said Z-B coach Don Kloth. “With the field of teams in this tournament and with all the close games we had;
6-2 junior forward Quintrell Love led Zion-Benton with 17 points and 10 rebounds, and 5-8 junior guard Ron Steward scored 15. Senior shooting guard Rodney Clinkscales added 13 points en route to being named tournament MVP.
“I feel like I deserved to win it, and our team deserved to win this tournament after all the hard work we put it” said Clinkscales. “Ron (Steward) went downstate last year for 3’s so everyone knew he could shoot, so we all worked hard on our shots so we could hit when they double teamed him, and it paid off.”
