Brandon Dunson to SIUe

Bloomington’s very own Brandon Dunson is heading back to his home state to represent an in-state university. On, Friday December 7 Dunson announced his intentions to transfer out of University Tennessee-Chattanooga and enroll at the semester at Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville. Dunson is a 6-4 guard from the high school class 2007. Dunson attended Bloomington Central Catholic, and played alongside Josh Brent ( University of Illinois football recruit), Tom Norton, and Aaron Garriot. Garriot has already pledged his intentions to attend SIU-E and is enjoying a stellar season and coming off a big 69-64 win against Eureka who is led by 2009 big Jordan Prosser.   Coming out of high school Brandon had 16 divison-1 scholarship offers from all over the country including some that were high-major programs. Dunson ultimately choose SIU-E as they are a hot program with Lennox Forrestor at the helm and top asst. Mark Allaria.

Cavan W: Why did you transfer?

Dunson: I just wanted to be closer to home.  I come from a real tight-knit family and when I chose UTC I didn't know how much different it would be.  It's been pretty hard.

Cavan W: Have you been thinking of this decision for a while?

Dunson: I talked with my coaches about it before the season and they said if I wanted to they would red-shirt me to help me get better adjusted and see if I like it and I said okay.  Also, it would give me full eligibility starting next year if I decided to transfer.

Cavan W: Are you Glad you went to UTC?

Dunson: I'm glad I went to UTC.  They've got a great coaching staff and they care about their players like no other staff I've seen before.  They have a family, not a team.  They do more than just basketball and I will miss the coaches and players.  I will never regret going there.  I'm just kind of disappointed it didn't workout.  I built some great relationships with the coaches, players, and some of the people on campus that I plan to keep.  I'm still cool with everyone there.

Cavan W: Do you look back and say I wish I would have gone prep for a year?

Dunson: I don't regret any of the choices I made.  Prep school could have been a good option but I think this way was just as good.  Brewster Academy was 18 hrs away so it would have been a lot harder.  I love the coach and the players that I know there as well but this way, I'm ahead on my academics and I know where I'll be for the next four years for certain now.

Cavan W: Now you are a year ahead on academics does that make the adjustment easier?

Dunson: I love the coach and the players that I know there as well but this way, I'm ahead on my academics and I know where I'll be for the next four years for certain now.

Cavan Walsh: Aaron Garriot has told me that you two have been best friends since his freshman year, did this play a major factor along with your relationship with Lennox ?

Dunson: It really didn't play a part in my decision but it's definitely a plus.  I'm real comfortable playing with Aaron and Terrance Williams.  They were both on my AAU team and Aaron was on my high school team where we were backcourt mates.  We've been best friends since my sophomore year and I think it'll be fun.  Coach Forrester is a great coach and a great person and I really look forward to playing for him.

Cavan W: You are an SIU-E Cougar now, so are you recruiting your buddy Donald Stewart to join the party?

Dunson: I definitely want Ducky to come.  We've talked about it and he's highly considering it but he's still got other schools in mind as well. We're going to be very talented if all of it works out and I believe it will.  We're very talented now but watch out if we get everyone.

Cavan W: How excited are you for the new gym renovations?

Dunson: Very excited.  I'm hoping we can get some big wins early and build the fans' support because after going through a semester of Division I basketball, there's nothing like playing in front of a good home crowd. I want people to be excited about SIU-E basketball because I think we have a chance to be big time.
