LONDON SKOLARS 8-50 HULL KR
Despite romping away with a 50-8 win at New River Stadium, there were times when Rovers looked hesitant and they really should have had even more points on the scoreboard. They would have achieved it but for some basic errors and wrong decisions and again seeing completion rates were disappointingly low at the 60% mark.
Playing into a very strong wind, Ally McClarron was called upon in the opening minute to collect a deep kick from the host. The winger made ground before passing to Craig Poucher, but unfortunately the full-back spilled the ball on the first tackle which led to a spell of heavy pressure from the Skolars.
Second-row forward Mark Cantoni was held short and when Rovers managed to get play down the London half, kiwi Paul Mansson hoisted a bomb which was knocked back to an advancing play. This time it was Paul Pickering who was held up over the home line.
The Robins opened the scoring in the 6th minute, when Paul Parker opened a gap for Poucher to easily touchdown, the powerful wind blowing Scott Thorburns conversion attempt off course. London kept in contact for most of the first-half, helped by the wind that they used well, with Peter Hannon successful with two 40/20 kicks.
Play swung from end-to-end, but on thirteen minutes the Skolars were on the board when Dale Holdstock was penalised for a high tackle and Glen Osborn landed the 40m penalty goal.
This stung Rovers into action and a minute later, Pickering and Andy Smith moved the ball out to Poucher, whose offload was perfectly timed for McClarron to cross over by the corner flag. Thorburn again unfortunate as the conversion attempt was again wide but the Robins led 8-2.
For a team playing their third game in six days, the Skolars looked remarkably full of spirit and on twenty minutes they forced their way over with a converted try from Joel Osborn, but then came the deluge.
Frank Watene was introduced from the bench giving the visitors attack more pace and the kiwi tied up plenty of London tacklers going forward. This begun a spree of 42 unanswered points as Rovers coasted clear, inspired by the half-back combination of Thorburn and Mansson.
Again the action swung immediately to the other end where the home defence failed to hold Antohny Seibold, who slipped the ball to the supporting Pickering. The hooker scampered over from close range and Thorburn landed the conversion to restore the visitors lead.
By half-time Rovers had increased their lead to 20-8 when superb handling from Anthony Seibold and Poucher sent in Parker which Thorburn converted superbly from the touchline.
It took only seven minutes after the break for Rovers to add their fifth try. Mansson followed up his own 40/20 with a dummy to produce a typical solo try, again converted by Thorburn. Six minutes later and a swift move across the field ended with McClarron going over in the corner for his second try and the lead extended to 32-8 following another Thorburn conversion.
The home side battled, with Cantoni creating several chances, but Mansson created two more tries to put the game beyond doubt, working to the blindside to send Jon Aston across with an overlap then four minutes later a floating pass wide which Matt Calland gratefully accepted. Thorburn again successful with both conversion attempts as the Robins went further ahead at 44-8.
With five minutes remaining, half-back Thorburn brought up the half century for Hull KR, as well as a personal haul of 18 points, when the Aussie raced onto a great Seibold pass for a well taken solo try, which he converted.
Injuries to Casey Mayberry and Dale Holdstock were the most worrying things to come from the game, Mayberry picking up another knee injury whilst Holdstock suffered a hamstring problem. Both look doubtful for Rovers final group match at Doncaster on Good Friday, but the club will check them both during the week.
So knowing their guarantee for the next round in the competition, and with the league season opener on Easter Monday, Andy Ellis, Craig Farrell and Dean Andrews could come back into contention whilst Lynton Stott, Paul Fletcher and Adam Sullivan could be back from injuries.
