Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is a Chihuahua?

The Chihuahua is a small, 2 - 6 pound dog.

Where can I get a Chihuahua?

A reputable breeder or rescue is best.

Go to my General Chihuahua Info page to learn about safely obtaining a Chi.

What is their average lifespan?

Chihuahuas are long lived for a dog. 12 - 18 years is expected, 14 or 15 being the average.

Do they need special food?

No, although Chis should have smaller kibble, because of their smaller teeth. wet food mixed with small dog dry food is a common and healthy feeding combination.

Are they yappy and high-strung?

Yes and no. Chihuahuas can be hyper and high-strung if not socialized and trained. They will bark easily, growl and nip at strangers, and be obnoxious dogs if not taught that this is simply NOT acceptable. They should not be treated like little humans. To learn more about the training of Chis, go to my General Info page, or the Training part of my Resources & Contacts page. If socialized when young, and trained and treated properly, they should not be hyper/high-strung.

Are they smart?

Chihuahuas are not your working Border Collie. They weren't bred to work and analyze situations, like working or herding or hunting dogs. They were simply bred to be companion animals. They are smart for what they were bred for: to be dogs and be loving friends.

What group are they in?

In both the AKC and the UKC they are categorized in the Toy Group.

Are they good with children?

Not really. Chihuahuas are not play toys, and small children usually have a hard time understanding this concept. The parent cannot always be there, and most Chis won't hesitate to snap or bite when pestered too much. They can also be accidentally hurt by toddlers or children. Some individuals are different, but this is just generally speaking.

Children in the household of an average Chi should be 12 or older. Individuals may vary.

Are they good with other dogs?

No. But, I've heard of many Chihuahuas who love other dogs. Most all Chihuahuas love other Chis, though, and are just intimidated by large dogs.

Be very careful when your Chi is with other dogs, and remember to socialize thoroughly when they're pups if possible.

Can they be trained?

Yes, but generally not to high standards. Remember, they're not German Shepherds. But, basic obedience should be achievable. They are somewhat difficult to housetrain. Dog litterboxes are recommended, because of their cold sensitiveity. You should be very consistent with their potty training, and pay close attention to easily looked over pee spots.

Where should my dog sleep?

Definitely NOT outside.  This is serious. Chis can DIE from exposure if left outside too long. They need to have a soft, warm dog bed, or sleep on your bed(this is my personal preference).

What about their health?

The parents and pups should be screened if you've gotten them from a reputable breeder. If from a rescue, contact a vet to know what to look for in a healthy Chihuahua. Then, you can best select your rescue pooch. Regular vet visits are a wise choice.

How big will they get?

The average size for a healthy Chi is 2 - 6 lbs. and 10 to 12 inches tall. Some breeders breed for 'extra small' or 'teacup' Chis. These Chis are usually less healthy, and not a good choice for a pet.

Are they good travelers?

Generally, yes. Their small size makes them very easy to transport. You should intro duce puppies to being in cars as a positive thing as a part of your puppy socialization.
