Getting A Puppy

Before You Buy
Before you set your mind on getting a 2 or 3 pound (full grown weight) Chihuahua because it looks soooo cute. Please takes these things into consideration:

Although Chihuahuas are hardy the smaller ones weighing under 3 1/2 pounds when grown (sometimes referred to as "teacups") tend to be more susceptible to health problems.

Even if the dog is healthy such a tiny size makes it quite fragile. Accidently stepping on it can do serious harm. Having such a small dog can become more of an obstacle than a joy since you will always need to be watching under your feet and where you sit. And believe me these accidents happen so easily, I once sent my poochie flying across the floor when she stepped into my path. But mine's over a 10 pounder and wasn't hurt, I still shudder when I think what would of happened if she was one of the tiny ones.

Remember that a grown Chihuahua weighing 5, or even 10 pounds is still small and still adorable. It may not fit into your pocket but it may bring you more years of companionship.

What To Look For
So how can you tell how large a puppy is going to get. A good indication is the size of the parents, if both mom and dad are large then chances are junior will be too. The size of the pup can also (but not always) be an indicator of how big it will get, big pup, big grownup.

Always take a look at both parents if possible since their characteristics and temperment is a good indication what the pup will be like when it's grown.

Choose a pup that's friendly, is not afraid to approach you and gets along with its' siblings. Beware of timid or shy pups, they may grow up to become biters. The same can be true of the ones that seem pushy and want to take control of the entire litter.

Where To Buy
Buy from a breeder not a petstore. Besides costing twice as much puppies from a petstore are not as well cared for or as healthy as those from a reputable breeder. They are also more likely to have behavior problems. Many petstores get their pups from puppy mills, places that are known for breeding unhealthy dogs in unsanitory and poor conditions.

When visiting breeders look at the surroundings the dogs are kept in. The place should be clean. Expect a good breeder to ask about your home environment, they care where their puppies end up. He will allow you to see the mama (the pup's mama, not the breeder's). Although puppies are usually ready for a new home at around 8 weeks of age, reputable breeders of Chihuahuas wait until the pups are about 10-12 weeks. The smaller the puppy the older it will be before they're ready to go.
