Background
Although its exact origin is open to speculation, it is generally agreed that the Chihuahua had come from little dogs called Techichi
found in the Mexican state of Chihuahua (hence the name) around 1850
and was introduced to the United States by tourists
in the late 19th century. The tiny dog won the hearts of people and has become one of
the most popular breeds not only in North America but in Europe as well.
Characteristics
Being the world's most smallest dog, the Chihuahua can weigh anywhere
between 1.5-10 pounds but officially (if you want to show your dog) cannot
exceed 6 pounds and
stands between around 6-10 inches.
Chihuahuas come in 2 varieties: the smooth coat and the long coat.
Both can be any color, either solid, marked, or splashed.
It's tail is on the long side and can be either straight or in a loop over the back.
For a little guy these swift moving dogs have a lot of spunk.
They are very smart, alert and they tend to be a bit bossy.
But maybe that's because they are loyal to their owners and are protective what's "theirs".
Chihuahuas don't like dogs of other breeds, prefering to stick to their own kind
(picky aren't they?).
The American Kennel Club has published the
AKC CHIHUAHUA VIDEO.
