Standout performances in abundance at Chico Twilight Distance Carnival

CHICO, Calif. – Kara Lubieniecki earned a provisional NCAA Championships bid and the Chico State women’s track & field team consistently posted high finishes during second day action in the Chico Twilight Distance Carnival at University Stadium.

Lubieniecki turned in a season-best time of 4:36.10 in winning the 1,500 meter run, grabbing the provisional bid while running the sixth-fastest 1,500 in Chico State history. Katie Prucha just missed a provisional bid en route to winning the women’s 400 meter hurdles…her time of 1:03.82 was the third-fastest ever in the event by a Wildcat.

Other event winners included Elizabeth Kain in the 400 meter dash (her best-ever time of 57.71 seconds places her eighth all-time in Chico State history), Brandy Tummings in the triple jump (10.60 meters) and Sarah Ward in the hammer throw (a season-best 46.53 meters). The Wildcat relay team of Kain, Kelly Clancey, Shannon Jordan and Annelise Weber took top honors in the 4x100 meter relay (50.20 seconds), while Kain, Clancey, Weber and Johntay Cokley combined to win the 4x400 meter relay with a time of 3:57.40.

Nicole Barbour chalked up three second place finishes in the shot put (13.22 meters), discus (41.73 meters) and hammer throw (45.23 meters). Julianne Conrad placed second in the high jump (1.60 meters), while Celeste Manka matched her season best in the pole vault with a second place score of 3.35 meters.

The Wildcats are back in action this Friday and Saturday, taking part in the Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut. Chico State will also be competing Saturday in the California/Oregon Challenge in Ashland, Ore

Bauhs returns to win main event, Wildcats rack up NCAA Championship bids during Chico Twilight Distance Carnival

CHICO, Calif. – “The best field of middle distance runners to ever assemble on a track between Sacramento and Eugene, Ore.” more than lived up to the hype, as Saturday’s 1,500 meter run saw former Chico State standout and NCAA champion Scott Bauhs take first place while three members of the Wildcat men’s track team earned provisional NCAA Championship bids – it was just one of many highlights during the final day of the Chico Twilight Distance Carnival at University Stadium.

Bauhs won the 1,500 with a time of 3:41.34 (bettering his all-time Chico State mark by 1.29 seconds), edging fellow pro runner Steve Sherer of the New York Athletic Club by 3.25 seconds. Former Wildcat and 2007 NCAA 5,000 meter champion finished third with a time of 3:46.02. Chico State runners Michael Wickman (3:46.52), David Wellman (3:51.32) and Beau Rogers (3:51.81), finished the 1,500 in fourth, seventh and eighth place respectively, each earning NCAA provisional bids.

Matt Jarvis put in another productive day, finishing first in the shot put (earning an automatic NCAA bid with a throw of 17.28 meters, the sixth-longest in Chico State history), notching a provisional bid with a winning toss of 54.28 meters in the hammer throw (seventh best ever by a Wildcat) and a second place showing in the discus (46.84 meters).

Other Wildcats winning their Saturday events and earning provisional NCAA bids included Oliver Shabram in the 400 meter hurdles (his time of 53.17 seconds the sixth-fasted in Chico State history) and Ryan Bertucci in the high jump (his 2.09 meter score was just shy of his all-time best).

Chico State dominated the 400 meter dash, with Max Zavala, Jeff Taylor, Bojurie Rogers-Wright, Matt Sloggy and Dwight Atkins finishing one through five, with Zavala notching his season best with a winning time of 49.58 seconds. Clayton Francis won the triple jump with a season-best mark of 14.13 meters, while Aren Dawkins placed second in the long jump (6.64 meters). Manny Mejia’s third place time of 14:59.15 in the 5,000 meter run was his best performance of the season.
