I bought this '81 Mercedes 280SE in July '07 on an impulse after a customer had it towed in with a blown motor. $450 later and the car was mine. I'm not a big Mercedes dude, in fact I don't even really like Mercedes. But I bought this one for a cruiser. And, it was never going to be powered by a Merc engine again. The original plan was to fit a 1UZ-FE, but for some crazy reason, with all the 1UZ's that are floating around, I couldn't get a suitable one for two months.
After removing the trashed 2.8L six, I noticed how big the engine bay was and thought a VH45DE might just fit in there. So I ordered one from SSS Automotive in Sydney. A couple of days later it arrived. I did an initial test fit and discovered a few problems. Exhaust manifolds wouldn't fit. Alternator and oil filter assembly fouled on the chassis rails. The starter motor hump in the bellhousing foulded on the steering box.
The solution, section the rails and plate them up for clearance to the oil filter and alternator. I cut a hole in the bellhousing to clear the steering box. I'll have to make forward facing log exhaust manifolds for it all to fit.

Update: Well, I did end up making forward facing log exhuast manifolds. This was my only option. They come out the front of the engine and loop round under the control arms. I thought this might cause problems with ground clearance, but hasn't. I made the exhaust in press and mandrel bent 2.25" with two cats up front, two small oval mufflers before the diff, and then one 16" long, 7" round stainless twin 2.25" muffler at the rear. The car is now on the road and sounds awesome. It does need a balance pipe though. This car is the ultimate sleeper. So many people have been left dumbfounded by it's ability.
There are a few more things to do like getting the speedo and tacho working. Once this is all done, I think I'm going to sell the car. As much as I like it, and as quick as it is, it's just not my style. Anyone in Sydney, Aus thinking of making an offer in the next few months, give me a buzz at chemicalrick@gmail.com As an indication of what sort of money I'm looking for, I've had interest in the area of $10,000. I have spent way over 100 hours making this conversion work. To pay a workshop to put this engine into this car would cost $15,000 plus $2000 for the engine. These cars are selling for between $2000 and $7000. Do the maths. Its a bargain.
