Chelton Stud

Breeding ponies for temperament, movement and type

Our aim is to breed quality riding ponies with excellent temperament, movement and the ability to excel under saddle.

Chelton Stud is situated 5 minutes from Darfield, a small town close to the picturesque Southern Alps in the South Island, New Zealand. Shelley Haig, owner of Chelton Stud along with her husband Tony  has been involved with horses for over thirty years. Having ridden competitively in dressage, eventing and showing and now following the dressage and showing circuit again with their fourteen year old daughter, Shelley realised the need for ponies and hacks with exceptional temperaments, extravagant movement and excellent conformation that can compete and excel in varied disciplines of competition. The stud started in 1997 with the arrival of 'Cherrywood' a 13.1 pony stallion who stood at stud to a limited amount of mares until 2003.

The stud has gone from small beginnings with one broodmare to now consistently breeding 3-4 quality ponies and park hacks a year with unquestionable temperaments, outstanding forward movement and the conformation to go to the top in any discipline. Wether it be showing, dressage or jumping the Chelton ponies are bred to excel under saddle. We very rarely show our youngstock in hand as we have other commitments that take up our time. Also we like the long term benefits of letting young ponies and horses grow and mature at their own rate with the support of quality pasture and feed regimes along with plenty of paddock space to play and strengthen limbs.

Combining proven bloodlines from reknown New Zealand studs such as 'Kirkwood', 'Miltondale', and 'Phoenician' with top overseas blood of Keston Royal Occasion, Syon Splendour, Rotherwood Acrobat, Yealand Night Flight, Treharne Talisman, Sir Percy of Paxhall, Baughurst William of Orange, the results are starting to show.
