Letter from the President...

Greetings from the Brock's!  We hope that you all have had a great summer of fun and relaxation. Ours has been much busier than we would have liked and unfortunately started off the middle of May with the loss of our van. Amy decided to become a storm chaser and got a little too close to her first tornado. She and the kids were okay but the van wasn't.  A couple of weeks later, I lost my brother in an automobile accident near Hahnville. We want to thank you for your continued prayers and support during this difficult time of loss.

On a brighter note, we have so much to be thankful for. God is so gracious and merciful and is ALWAYS there to strengthen us and comfort us. We will take Him as our partner as we begin another year of homeschooling and trust Him to guide and direct each one of us.

We will be serving as President another year, with John & Patsy LaRive as V. President, and Gary & Sherry Northington as Treasurer and New Members Coordinator.

Our annual sign-up meeting will be held Thursday, August 26th at the Westbank library. More details are in the newsletter. Please make every effort to attend as we will be voting on a couple of proposed changes.

In closing, we look forward to serving you again this year, and should you need anything, please do not hesitate to contact us.

In His Service,

Joe & Amy Brock

about our newsletter…

Please note that starting with the September issue, the deadline to submit articles will be the 25th of each month. My goal is to get the newsletter delivered before the new month actually begins so we don’t miss anything that occurs during those first few days. You can email your articles/news/calendar of events/event highlights to Carol at GraceByDesign@cox.net or call me at 785 0623.

It’s a Girl!!

Congratulations to Mark and Kim DeVillier on the birth of their daughter on Monday, July 26, 2004.  Mother and baby Hannah Elizabeth are both doing fine.  Thank you for your prayers.

B-I-N-G-O

There will be no BINGO in August.

Ocean Commotion 2004

(This event requires RSVP prior to CHEF’s August registration!!)

Date: Thursday, November 4, 2004

Time: 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Place: LSU Pete Maravich Assembly Center

Admission: FREE!

RSVP to Sherry 785 9466 or gnorthin@bellsouth.net no later than August 16th

Ocean Commotion exhibits are set up like those at a large science or craft fair.  Over fifty exhibitors are expected.    The primary purpose of these exhibits is to give students the chance to learn by seeing, hearing, and touching the products of the sea and coast -- the aquatic animals, plants, and minerals- -- upon which Louisiana's citizens are so dependent.

The exhibit viewing will be divided into two time slots, each two hours in length, with one time slot for K -- 4th grade students and the other for 5th -- 8th grade students. At this time it is unclear how LSU will handle home school groups with children spanning both groups.  Students are free to choose the exhibits they would like to view and to visit exhibits in any order.

There is no cost for admissionReservations are required and will be accepted by LSU for only 1 week on a first-come, first- served basis. If you want to attend your commitment is needed no later than Monday, August 16, 2004. Call Sherry Northington at 785-9466 with the number of adults, number of children and their grades, and the number of vehicles (for a parking permit).

Communicators For Christ

As many of our CHEF students have completed both the Beginning and Intermediate CFC Class our teachers from last year; Dee McGill, Ryann O’Connor, and Sherry Northington will not be teaching a structured CFC class this year.  The Lord has called these ladies to organize a CFC Speech Club. The Club will offer students a monthly forum to practice on prepared materials. If anyone is interested in participating in a club, please contact Dee McGill 785 1984, Ryann O’Connor 331 2195, or Sherry Northington 785 9466.  Or if you feel called to teach a more formal CFC class this year contact one of these ladies prior to August 23rd. They are willing to put on a workshop for new teachers.

Thinking like A Christian

"A Worldview is a way of viewing or interpreting all of reality. It is an interpretive framework through which or by which, one makes sense of the data of life and the world."  Norman Geisler

What is your high school/College-aged students’ worldview?  Can they defend their position to opposing and often hostile worldviews?  Do they understand that ideas have consequences and how these ideas comprise a worldview?   Can they withstand the popular culture that dominates our society and college campuses?

In this 11 week study, David Noebel, President and co-founder of Summit Ministries, lays out a biblical Christian worldview through daily lessons, group discussions, handouts, and video teaching. At the end of this course, students will be better prepared to confront and withstand the popular culture of our day. "They will fight the good fight, finish the course and keep the faith" (2 Tim. 4:7)

Classes will begin the first week of September and we will finish the week before Thanksgiving; day, time, and location to be determined.

There is a fee of $25 for the course and $16 for the workbook.  This class is for high school and college students. Parents are encouraged to participate, as this study is great for large groups and exciting discussions!!!!!

If you are interested or would like more information, please call Ryann O'Connor 331 2195.

The Boys Club, Girls Club and Young Ladies Club...

Some of our club hostesses are unable to have club meetings in their homes this year.  We are going to try to have all of the clubs meet simultaneously and at the same location once each month.

Date: Friday, Sept. 17th

Time: 2-4pm

Location:  Westbank Library meeting room (on Hwy 90 in Luling)

Open to: All homeschooled children aged 9 and older are invited.

RSVP: by Wed. Sept. 15 to Susan Theall at (504) 431 8146 or CHEFofStCh@juno.com

We will divide into four groups, girls 9-12, girls 13 and up, boys 9-12, boys 13 and up.  (**Please notice that the younger groups' age limits have changed!) Each child should bring their favorite board game.  The girls will still make a craft (I'll let you know when supplies are needed).   Mothers of children 12 and under will be expected to stay and help.

Thanks to all the past hostesses for sharing their homes, time, and talents, and for giving our children a time and place of Christian fellowship.

Beachsweep 2004

The Northingtons will not be able to coordinate the field trip to Fourchon Beach for Beachsweep 2004.  Any parent interested in leading this field trip can contact Sherry Northington at 785 9466 or gnorthin@bellsouth.net for details.  This event is held internationally on the third Saturday of September.  CHEF has participated for the last three years.

Science Fair for CHEF Students

Sherry Northington has stepped forward to coordinate a CHEF Science Fair with the vision that if we do it the “right way” our students can go to compete at the Region X Science Fair at Nicholls State University (NSU) in  Thibodaux.  There will be a kick off meeting in the early fall to provide details to both the parents and students.  Already Sherry anticipates she may need volunteers to help judge the entries.  Details will follow as our group receives information from NSU.  It is not too early to start thinking about possible projects as the first phase of the Science Fair may be in late January.  If you think you might want to participate, drop Sherry an e-mail at gnorthin@bellsouth.net . She will continue to share details with the whole group through our newsletters.

HSLDA Membership fee to increase October 1st...

(From HSLDA...)

“…Over the past 20 years… we’ve never raised the membership fee.

….Effective October 1, 2004, the annual cost of membership is going from $100 to $115, and for those in discount groups (CHEF), from $85 to $95.

…For families who will find this increase financially difficult, we have several payment plan options…”

If you are planning to join HSLDA, do so before October 1st to avoid the rate increase! There is also a ‘lifetime membership’ available for $1000. This is a good deal if you have more than 8.7 years of homeschooling ahead of you (10.5 for CHEF members).

Visit www.HSLDA.com for more information.

Genesis 1:14-15

Then God said, “Let there be lights in the firmament of the heavens to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs and seasons, and for days and years; and let them be for lights in the firmament of the heavens to give light on the earth”; and it was so.
