Stereotypes: Middle and high school nightmares

do you ever wake up in bed in the morning feeling like your emo just because of the way  your hair is cut, or how people say you are punk because you like black and red and like to wear it a lot, or people label you as a nerd cause you like to read and you get good grades, or if you are a prep or a slut, or just a loser??? this is sterotyping (labeling) my dear people.

The things you see on T.V. on shows tthat have a setting on the life as a middle-schooler is mostly false.

but....in some cases it is. Some of us cant't help it when we look at a person and start to wonder what kind of person he/or she is. this is normal we are all human and our curiosity comes in many ways. There are 3 types of desicion types and which they are: Passive, Aggresive, or assertive. these desicions came all become either positive or sometimes negative.

many teenagers are stereotypical. espeacially girls.

some people are not so kind and label others because they are already labeled themselves.

A lot of teens these days use this drug. dont get pulled in to it.

        What is marijuana?
Marijuana (grass, pot, weed) is the common name for a crude drug made from the plant Cannabis sativa. The main mind-altering (psychoactive) ingredient in marijuana is THC (delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol), but more than 400 other chemicals also are in the plant. A marijuana "joint" (cigarette) is made from the dried particles of the plant. The amount of THC in the marijuana determines how strong its effects will be. The type of plant, the weather, the soil, the time of harvest, and other factors determine the strength of marijuana. The strength of today's marijuana is as much as ten times greater than the marijuana used in the early 1970s. This more potent marijuana increases physical and mental effects and the possibility of health problems for the user. Hashish, or hash, is made by taking the resin from the leaves and flowers of the marijuana plant and pressing it into cakes or slabs. Hash is usually stronger than crude marijuana and may contain five to ten times as much THC. Pure THC is almost never available, except for research. Substances sold as THC on the street often turn out to be something else, such as PCP.

What are some of the immediate effects of smoking marijuana?
Some immediate physical effects of marijuana include a faster heartbeat and pulse rate, bloodshot eyes, and a dry mouth and throat. No scientific evidence indicates that marijuana improves hearing, eyesight, and skin sensitivity. Studies of marijuana's mental effects show that the drug can impair or reduce short-term memory, alter sense of time, and reduce ability to do things which require concentration, swift reactions, and coordination, such as driving a car or operating machinery.

Are there any other adverse reactions to marijuana?
A common bad reaction to marijuana is the "acute panic anxiety reaction." People describe this reaction as an extreme fear of "losing control," which causes panic. The symptoms usually disappear in a few hours.

What about psychological dependence on marijuana?
Long-term regular users of marijuana may become psychologically dependent. They may have a hard time limiting their use, they may need more of the drug to get the same effect, and they may develop problems with their jobs and personal relationships. The drug can become the most important aspect of their lives.

What are the dangers for young people?
One major concern about marijuana is its possible effects on young people as they grow up. Research shows that the earlier people start using drugs, the more likely they are to go on to experiment with other drugs. In addition, when young people start using marijuana regularly, they often lose interest and are not motivated to do their schoolwork. The effects of marijuana can interfere with learning by impairing thinking, reading comprehension, and verbal and mathematical skills. Research shows that students do not remember what they have learned when they are "high".

How does marijuana affect driving ability?
Driving experiments show that marijuana affects a wide range of skills needed for safe driving -- thinking and reflexes are slowed, making it hard for drivers to respond to sudden, unexpected events. Also, a driver's ability to "track" (stay in lane) through curves, to brake quickly, and to maintain speed and the proper distance between cars is affected. Research shows that these skills are impaired for at least 4-6 hours after smoking a single marijuana cigarette, long after the "high" is gone. If a person drinks alcohol, along with using marijuana, the risk of an accident greatly increases. Marijuana presents a definite danger on the road.

Does marijuana affect the human reproductive system?
Some research studies suggest that the use of marijuana during pregnancy may result in premature babies and in low birth weights. Studies of men and women may have a temporary loss of fertility. These findings suggest that marijuana may be especially harmful during adolescence, a period of rapid physical and sexual development.

How does marijuana affect the heart?
Marijuana use increases the heart rate as much as 50 percent, depending on the amount of THC. It can cause chest pain in people who have a poor blood supply to the heart - and it produces these effects more rapidly than tobacco smoke does.

How does marijuana affect the lungs?
Scientists believe that marijuana can be especially harmful to the lungs because users often inhale the unfiltered smoke deeply and hold it in their lungs as long as possible. Therefore, the smoke is in contact with lung tissues for long periods of time, which irritates the lungs and damages the way they work. Marijuana smoke contains some of the same ingredients in tobacco smoke that can cause emphysema and cancer. In addition, many marijuana users also smoke cigarettes; the combined effects of smoking these two substances creates an increased health risk.

Can marijuana cause cancer?
Marijuana smoke has been found to contain more cancer-causing agents than is found in tobacco smoke. Examination of human lung tissue that had been exposed to marijuana smoke over a long period of time in a laboratory showed cellular changes called metaplasia that are considered precancerous. In laboratory test, the tars from marijuana smoke have produced tumors when applied to animal skin. These studies suggest that it is likely that marijuana may cause cancer if used for a number of years.

How are people usually introduced to marijuana?
Many young people are introduced to marijuana by their peers - usually acquaintances, friends, sisters, and brothers. People often try drugs such as marijuana because they feel pressured by peers to be part of the group. Children must be taught how to say no to peer pressure to try drugs. Parents can get involved by becoming informed about marijuana and by talking to their children about drug use.

What is marijuana "burnout"?
"Burnout" is a term first used by marijuana smokers themselves to describe the effect of prolonged use. Young people who smoke marijuana heavily over long periods of time can become dull, slow moving, and inattentive. These "burned-out" users are sometimes so unaware of their surroundings that they do not respond when friends speak to them, and they do not realize they have a problem.

How long do chemicals from marijuana stay in the body after the drug is smoked?
When marijuana is smoked, THC, its active ingredient, is absorbed by most tissues and organs in the body; however, it is primarily found in fat tissues. The body, in its attempt to rid itself of the foreign chemical, chemically transforms the THC into metabolites. Urine tests can detect THC metabolites for up to a week after people have smoked marijuana. Tests involving radioactively labeled THC have traced these metabolites in animals for up to a month.

Anorexia isnt always their fault... sometimes it is exersizing because it is your passion and your body grows thinner and thinner...

In memory. Alex DeVinny...

"Alex DeVinny loved to run. "It's the only time/ When my mind is totally free," she once wrote in a poem. With the goal of winning her second state title, the 17-year-old track star from Racine, Winsconsin, spent the summer of 2003 running 10 to 15 miles a day. It was more than necessary for her training-- and a red flag for the Female Athlete Triad. She also stopped eating meals with her Family and lived on mostly fruits, vegetables, and desserts. But that wasn't enough to sustain her. Instead of performing better, her body started to fail under the strain of overexertion and malnutrition. Alex had never gotten her period, and by the next spring she was too weak to compete. For two years, she was in and out of hospitalsfor eating disorder treatment. On March 5 1006, Alex, then 20 and only 68 pounds, died from cardiac arrest."

Warning signs:

Pressure to perform in sports that emphasize thinness, like running and gymnastics, may lead some girls to lose too much weight.

When they develop all of the symtoms below, the condition is called Female Athlete Triad. Here's how to know if you are in danger.

#1 Undereating & overtraining: Do you skip meals and obsess over calories? Do you train way more than your teamates? If you consistantly burn more calories than you eat (girls who exervise 30 minutes a day should eat about 2,000 calories a day), your body gets too weak to function properly.

#2 Period problems: Has your period stopped for three months or more (or have you not started it by age 16)? It may be the result of malnutrition, which hurts the entire body-- not just your reproductive system. It can lower your metabolism and make your hair grow more slowly or fall out. It may even cause depression.

#3 Weak Bones: Have you ever broken a bone while playing sports? When your period stops, you produce less of the horomone estrogen. Lower estrogen levels cause your bones to lose their calcium, making them brittle and easily fractured. That can lead to osteoperosis, even in a teen.

What to do: If you or a friend experiences one or more of the signs above, tell a coach or parent. Doctors and dietants can help you adjust your diet and workouts so you excel at sports and protect your health. For more info, visit nationaleatingdisorders.org.

I would like to show Alexs' family and friends some love and support at their time of grieving.

God bless,

Erin Williams

Wavy Hair

1. Work a quarter-size amount volumizing gel through damp hair. Wrap 1-inch sections of hair around your finger

to define you wanves.

2. Use a diffuser on medium heat to blow-dry your hair. Hold the dryer 2 inches from your hair, lifting and scrunching your hair as you dry to enhance your waves.

3. When your hair is completely dry, brush through it once with a paddle brush. This will break upyour waves

so they looks soft and loose.

4. Part your heair on the left. Then draw an imaginary line straight up from the arch of your right eyebrowto your

hairline, and slide in a hairpin at that point.

SUICIDE:

So what is all this talk about people commiting suicide??

Teenagers sometimes use stereotypes "Emo" to depressed looking people.

Some do not realize that the name-calling can lead that person into more depression

than before and can lead them to taking their own lives.

The reason that these people may do such a thing is the feelings

below.

1. hopelessness- the feeling that no one appreciates them being around

2."The Victim"- a target twards bullying. Bullying can drive people

to fell like their life here is meant to be over for them.

3. Stress- Daily life may be entirely hard for them which they cant feel they can endure anymore and feel

like they can take it to an end by putting their life at an end.

are you feeling any of the above??

Get some help immediately and tell a responabile adult before it is too late and you take your

own life.

Consider some coucilng and phsycolygy help. they may subscribe some AnitDepressants may help your

Stress and anger in some wats but the counciling may help it along with the anti depressent help.

How do I know if any of my Friends or Family are considering suicide??:

1. do you see dark scabs or scars that are straight lines up and down or crisscoss on their

arms or their legs?? if you do this is called Self Mutilation, which you hurt youself becaus you "hate" yourself,

you dont feel any pain.

2. Under eye circles- if she/he seems tired all the time this may mean that he/she is stressing

over something and they havent been getting anysleep.

This last week was earth week

What is Earth week? It is the time where you can do your part to  saving the envirement and being aware about the things that are around you and here are some of the tips that

I would want to give you.

first, even though you think that releasing a balloon into the air is not littering it is. Many of these balloons most likely will pop and fall into the ocean that can lead to Sea Turtles thinking that it

is a Jellyfish and trying to eat them and choking to death. It may also pop and land in other envirements and may put other animals in danger by putting it into their mouths and

trying to eat it and choking on them.

Never Flush kitty litter. it will end up in the ocean and it may lead to poisoning sea otters. many otters die each year by the poisonous mitrogen that is in kitty litter.

Would you want to hurt me? Dont

                                     Hurt me either!

Follow some of those guideliues so that these poor animals dont get hurt!!!

There are many people in Society that try quitting smoking and they can't get out of this terrible habit.

WARNING DISTURBING PICTURES OF SMOKING EFFECTS IN THE FOLLOWING PICTURES!!!

Do you think these look healthy?

you think that these look charming?

Jack Cassidy; 50, died from smoking when he was smoking in his bed from his bed catching fire.

  • Tobacco use primarily begins in early adolescence. One-third of all smokers had their first cigarette by the age of 14.  Ninety percent of all smokers begin before the age of 21.2
  • Each day, 6,000 children under 18 years of age smoke their first cigarette. Almost 2,000 of them will become regular smokers - that's 757,000 annually.3
  • If current tobacco use patterns persist, an estimated 6.4 million current children smokers will eventually die prematurely from a smoking-related disease.4
  • Although smoking rates among high school students increased 32 percent between 1991 and 1997, rates have declined by almost 40% since 1997. In 2004, 22% of high school students were current smokers.5
  • In 2004, 11.7 percent of middle school students smoked.6
  • After a dramatic increase in teen cigar smoking throughout the 80s and early 90s cigar smoking declined 30% since 1997.  In 2004, 12.8 percent of high school students and 5.2 percent of middle school students were current cigar users.7
  • In 2004, 6.0 percent of all high school students and 2.9 percent of middle school students used smokeless tobacco.8 Although smokeless tobacco use previously was uncommon among adolescents, older teens began using it between 1970 and 1985, at the same time that the smokeless tobacco industry was strengthening their marketing efforts.9
  • Other tobacco products used by high school and middle school students includes pipes (3.1% and 2.6%), bidisI (2.6% and 2.3%) and kreteksII (2.3% and 1.5%).10
  • Tobacco use is associated with alcohol and illicit drug use, and acts as a "gateway drug."  Adolescents (12-17 year olds) who reported having smoked in the past 30 days were three times more likely to use alcohol, eight times more likely to smoke marijuana, and 22 times more likely to use cocaine, within those past 30 days than those 12-17 year olds who had not smoked during that time.11
  • Tobacco use in adolescence is also associated with a range of other risky, health-compromising behaviors, including being involved in fights, carrying weapons, engaging in high-risk sexual behavior, and using alcohol and other drugs.12
  • People who begin smoking at an early age are more likely to develop severe levels of nicotine addiction than those who start at a later age. Of adolescents who have smoked at least 100 cigarettes in their lifetime, most of them report that they would like to quit, but are not able to do so.13
  • In 2000, 59 percent of high school and 60 percent of middle school students who smoked seriously tried to quit smoking. In 2003, 61 percent of high school students said they wanted to stop smoking and 54 percent seriously tried to quit.14
  • Peers, siblings, and friends are powerful influences. The most common situation for first trying a cigarette is with a friend who already smokes.15
  • Youth who have two parents who smoke are more than twice as likely as youth without smoking parents to become smokers. More than 6 million youth (23 percent) are exposed to secondhand smoke daily, and more than 10 million youth aged 12 to 18 live in a household with at least one smoker.16
  • Among middle school students who were current smokers, 71% reported never being asked to show proof of age when buying cigarettes in a store, and 66% were not refused purchase because of their age.17
  • The 1998 Master Settlement Agreement prohibited tobacco companies from advertising their product in markets that target people younger than 18 years of age. However, this ban has not sufficiently accomplished its intended goal of curtailing tobacco exposure in children.18
  • Cigarette advertisements tend to emphasize youthful vigor, sexual attraction and independence themes, which appeal to teenagers and young adults struggling with these issues.  A recent study found that 34% of teens begin smoking as a result of tobacco company promotional activities.19
  • Another study found that 52 percent of teens with non-smoking parents started smoking because of exposure to smoking in movies.20

From the lungusa.org.

Smoking has harmful effects and did you know that second-hand smoke leads to deaths in people that dont even smoke?

  • Secondhand smoke has been classified by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as a known cause of cancer in humans (Group A carcinogen).2
  • Secondhand smoke exposure causes disease and premature death in children and adults who do not smoke. Secondhand smoke contains hundreds of chemicals known to be toxic or carcinogenic, including formaldehyde, benzene, vinyl chloride, arsenic ammonia and hydrogen cyanide.3
  • Secondhand smoke causes approximately 3,400 lung cancer deaths and 22,700-69,600 heart disease deaths in adult nonsmokers in the United States each year.4
  • A study found that nonsmokers exposed to environmental smoke were 25 percent more likely to have coronary heart diseases compared to nonsmokers not exposed to smoke.5
  • Nonsmokers exposed to secondhand smoke at work are at increased risk for adverse health effects.  Levels of ETS in restaurants and bars were found to be 2 to 5 times higher than in residences with smokers and 2 to 6 times higher than in office workplaces.6
  • Since 1999, 70 percent of the U.S. workforce worked under a smoke-free policy, ranging from 83.9 percent in Utah to 48.7 percent in Nevada.7  Workplace productivity was increased and absenteeism was decreased among former smokers compared with current smokers.8
  • Currently, 14 states including California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Maine, Massachusetts, Montana, New Jersey Rhode Island, Utah, Vermont, and Washington, as well as the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico, have already passed strong smoke-free air laws.9
  • As of 2005, nine smoke-free states prohibit smoking in almost all workplaces, including restaurants and bars (CA, CT, DE, ME, MA, NY, RI, VT and WA).10
  • Secondhand smoke is especially harmful to young children. Secondhand smoke is responsible for between 150,000 and 300,000 lower respiratory tract infections in infants and children under 18 months of age, resulting in between 7,500 and 15,000 hospitalizations each year, and causes 1,900 to 2,700 sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) deaths in the United States annually.11
  • Secondhand smoke exposure may cause buildup of fluid in the middle ear, resulting in 700,000 to 1.6 million physician office visits per year.12 Secondhand smoke can also aggravate symptoms in 400,000  to 1,000,000 children with asthma.13
  • In the United States, 21 million, or 35 percent of, children live in homes where residents or visitors smoke in the home on a regular basis.14  Approximately 50-75 percent of children in the United States have detectable levels of cotinine, the breakdown product of nicotine in the blood.15
  • New research indicates that private research conducted by cigarette company Philip Morris in the 1980s showed that secondhand smoke was highly toxic, yet the company suppressed the finding during the next two decades.16
  • The current Surgeon General's Report concluded that scientific evidence indicates that there is no risk-free level of exposure to second hand smoke. Short exposures to second hand smoke can cause blood platelets to become stickier, damage the lining of blood vessels, decrease coronary flow velocity reserves, and reduce heart rate variability, potentially increasing the risk of heart attack.17

You can get second hand smoke from anybody who smokes if they aren't careful enough

What you can do:

When your at a friends house and their parents are smoking politely ask your friend to go outside for the nice weather.

If its crummy outside ask if you can chill at your house.

If your parents smoke inside ask them if they can go smoke outside and tell them the effects that it has on you. not just them.

Don't ever be rude about it and realize that it is just a habit that they are going through and just help them through it.

What if my friend smokes?

What you can do:

when your friend is out have a conference with whoever is responsible for her and tell them what has been going on.

Pull your friend aside and ask them why they smoke and tell them that she is taking a serious hazard in her health.

Tell her the side effects and tell her to talk to a counseler at school that may be able to help her.

What if I smoke?

What you can do:

Tell your parents what mistake that you have made and ask for couseling.

Talk to your school conseler and ask that you may be able to visit her regularly each week.

try to find another friend that smokes who wants to quit and help eachother in quitting.
