Learn to Play the Trumpet

The Quick Free and Easy Guide!!

Holding the Trumpet

Err...Ummm right this is quite hard to explain

get your right hand, wrap you finger around the arch on its side

now put the next 3 fingers on the valves and you thumb wrapped around the 1st valv

Now, just rest your other hand wherever comfortable. Most people put their 2nd longest finger through the ring and just

rest the other fingers wherever. It varies from player to player!

Starting playing

If you can hold the trumpet this is the place to be now.

Hold the trumpet like normal and put ur mouth to the mouthpiece and try and make a buzzing sound.

If your do it right, you will most likely make the sound of a middle C though maybe a G, i advise practising this until you can play a clean C or G

Hint: C is the lowest open (no valves) note.

after you know you can play a C and press down valves 1 & 3 you are now playing a D, practise this until it is clean like the C & G

now play a G, hold down the 1st valve and blow marginally lighter than a G, you are now playing a F

now try and blow somewere in between a C & G and hold down valves 1 & 2

if you are lucky you can play an E now you can play C,D,E,F & G this will sound on a piano like playing

Bb, C,D Eb & F!

Note pitch is changed by either tightening of the lips (so they are closer together) or blowing more air through the trumpet. Obviously to get anywhere with the trumpet, you have to do both to be able to control your playing.

playing harder notes

now you can play C,D,E,F&G clearly now its time to play harder notes. try playing A, just press down on the 1st and 2nd valves and blow a little harder than playing the G if you get a clear note you are playing A

now lets try and play B. Blow a bit harder than the A and press down on the 2nd valve  if you can play this clearly its a B

now blow quite hard and dont press down on any valves if you are not playing a G you are playing upper C

now you can play these try playing some very easy pieces!

If your need to play higher or lower or play sharps and flats refer to the 2 valve charts
