DNA and
Making the Science Work for You

, is a voluntary Cat Breeder program to ensure the integrity of each Cat's pedigree by voluntary DNA Profiling.

is working toward Cat Breeders world wide submitting voluntary DNA samples. In this process we hope to help compile the world's largest database of feline DNA profiles for parentage verification, genetic identity purposes, mapping the feline genome and genetic health studies.

Feline DNA research is focused on the discovery of genetic mutations that cause inherited diseases and phenotypic traits.

The Science Behind DNA Profiles

DNA Profiles are generated using the same technology used by law enforcement agencies throughout the world. How does this work? In humans and cats alike, each gene is present as two copies (displayed as letters). Offspring receive one copy of each gene from each parent in a random process.

This technology does not use actual genes, but other DNA sequences that are also inherited one copy from each parent. For this reason, your cat's DNA Profile does not provide any information about the conformation of the cat, but can confirm the presence/absence of genetic diseases, such as PKD and HCM. We hope with further research that all genetic diseases will be readily identified on a consistant basis.

Voluntary DNA Profile

This voluntary program has resulted from significant input from the cat fancy. The DNA Profile Program is for owners and breeders electing to add value to their pedigree's by eliminating concerns or questions about identification and parentage. If you are buying a kitten out of specific champion line, DNA profiling is one way to protect yourself as both breeder and buyer.

A cat owner may contact a breeder who has signed up for usage of the  logo for a DNA Test Kit which includes a swab that the owner uses to collect loose cells from inside the cat's cheek. A DNA Profile containing the cat's registration information, genotype, and a unique DNA Profile number is issued for each cat sampled.

recommends that sample collection be done by a licensed Veterinarian and the cat in question be micro chipped. An alternative suggestion is for breeder and buyer together witness the swabbing of said cat/kitten.

recommends that each breeder should keep their own swab of each kitten sold to avoid future issues.

The DNA Database and Parentage Verification

Comparison of the DNA profiles of a dam, sire, and kitten(s) will determine, with greater than 99% confidence, whether the kitten(s) is from the tested dam and sire.  In case of accidental breedings or exposure to multiple Toms, DNA profiles will accurately identify the correct sire of each kitten. No more guessing!

Parentage Evaluation Service

Parentage Evaluation can be used to ensure accuracy when breeding has been done offsite, to add to extra measure of confidence to your pedigrees.

Buy with Confidence!

The goal of  is to provide Cat breeders and pet owners alike with the security of getting exactly what they pay for.

If your breeder does not offer this service, ask why and don't buy!
