Patterns

Patterns are a series of defensive and offensive moves against an imaginary opponent or opponents.

As a student advances through the grades of Taekwon-do increasingly complex patterns are learnt. Patterns incorporate every offensive and defensive technique of the art so students can learn more by practising patterns than sparring.

Why are there 24 patterns?

There are 24 patterns, each with a symbolic name and meaning. Many are named after figures from Korean History.

The Taekwon-do student must reach a minimum standard for each rank that is judged by the instructor before the student is promoted to the next rank. A grading is held every 3 months for the students who have learned the techniques required for their rank. Listed below is the syllabus which is a guide for what is required by each rank.

There are six orders of belts :

White, Yellow, Green, Blue, Red and Black.
