Dee-Fair Take A Risk

Labrador Retriever

Ever since I was a child I wanted a dog, and not just any dog, it had to be a Borzoi; as we live in the city it took a lot of begging and persuading my parents at that time… but finally I succeeded, although I had to make a sort of compromise with my father who said it had to be a Labrador or nothing. I gladly accepted and I’ll be thankful to him for the rest of my life!

My first Lab came in our home in 1985, a black grandson of a Kupros bred bitch. Since that day, my life changed completely and I never looked back. I did obedience with him and he was trained as an avalanche rescue dog, we did a bit of training for hunting trials when he was already quite an old boy and he enjoyed it immensely; he was also shown with some success. He is “responsible” for many friendships I have made over the years, for seeing places and meeting so many Labrador people I would have never met otherwise, for my involvement in the breed which I love.  He died at 14, and he will always have a very special place in my heart.

After he was gone, time was just not right for getting a new puppy … long days at work, baby on the way and so my husband’s dogs replaced the emptiness for the time being.  But after a few looooong years without a Lab, I finally decided that the home is too empty without a black dog around the house, that our sofas are just too clean without black hair on them, that I miss long walks on the rainy evenings, that I miss the touch of a cold wet nose on my face in the mornings a bit too much to live without it any more...

And then Chance landed with a bang! Lovely 12 weeks old pup whose skin was two sizes too big for him, happily and confidently bounced from the plane, covered me with sloppy kisses which I missed so much all those years ever since I lost my first black boy.

And still, every single day he gives me and my family his unconditional love and affection ... big friend to my little son, great pal to my husband. Clever, outgoing and happy boy, who is perfectly happy to cuddle on the sofa one day, enjoys a day at the show on the other but for whom the greatest fun of all is to do what this breed was bred to do from the beginnings.

He is everything I wished for and I am deeply thankful to Lene and Henrik Johansen, his breeders, to trust me enough to send Chance over. And big thanks to my friend Barbara who took so much trouble …

...  THANK YOU!

.... one very happy boy with his dog !

A BOY AND A DOG.
by Marty Hale.

I want my boy to have a dog,
Or maybe two or three...
He'll learn from them much easier
Than he would learn from me.

A dog will show him how to love
And bear no grudge or hate;
I'm not so good at that myself
But dogs will do it straight.

I want my boy to have a dog
To be his pal and friend,
So he may learn that friendship
Is faithful to the end.

There never yet has been a dog
Who learned to double-cross,
Nor catered to you when you won
Then dropped you when you lost.
