Glossary

  1. Achiote: A tropical American evergreen shrub or small tree (Bixa orellana), having heart-shaped leaves and showy, rose-pink or sometimes white flowers. Also called lipstick tree.

  2. Biodynamic: Of or relating to the study of the effects of dynamic processes, such as motion or acceleration, on living organisms.

  3. Biotechnology: The use of microorganisms, such as bacteria or yeasts, or biological substances, such as enzymes, to perform specific industrial or manufacturing processes. Applications include the production of certain drugs, synthetic hormones, and bulk foodstuffs as well as the bioconversion of organic waste and the use of genetically altered bacteria in the cleanup of oil spills.

  4. Bt-gene: stem from the bacteria Bacillus Thringiensis, that produces toxin that destroy the gut of insects.

  5.  Cacao Pods (Beans): seed of the cacao tree; ground roasted beans are source of chocolate

  6. Cacao Tree: tropical American tree producing cacao beans

  7. Flavonoids: Any of a large group of plant substances that includes the anthocyanins.

  8. Genetically Modified: pertaining to a living organism whose genetic material has been altered, changing one or more of its characteristics; bioengineered

  9. Maya (Mayan): A member of a Mesoamerican Indian people inhabiting southeast Mexico, Guatemala, and Belize, whose civilization reached its height around A.D. 300-900. The Maya are noted for their architecture and city planning, their mathematics and calendar, and their hieroglyphic writing system.

  10. Midges: Any of gnatlike flies of the family chiromidiae, found worldwide and frequently occuring in swarms near ponds and lakes.

  11. Theobroma (Theobromine): A bitter, colorless alkaloid, C7H8N4O2, derived from the cacao bean, found in chocolate products and used in medicine as a diuretic, vasodilator, and myocardial stimulant.
