The Working Teenage Project--Answers from USA

  

1.      What is the legal age that a teenager can start working in your country?
Teenagers from 14 and 15 years of age are limited to work on school year; hours are limited to 3 hours a day and 18 hours a week.  On days when there is no school and in the summer, working hours increase to 8 hours a day and 40 hours a week.  There are limits on when you can work, too - no later than 7 p.m. during the school year and no later than 9 p.m. Ages 16 and 17: There is no limit on hours, but if you are under 18, you cannot work in a job that the Labor Department considers hazardous. Once a youth reaches 18 years of age, he or she is no longer subject to the federal youthemployment and child labor law provisions.

  1. What is the minimum wage that a teenager can afford to work?
     The law allows employers to pay employees under 20 years of age a lower wage for a limited period (90 calendar days, not work days)after they are first employed. Any wage rate above the $4.25 minimun wager for youth an hour may be paid to eligible workers during this 90-day period.

    Teenagers that are 14 and 15 years old can only work 3 hours a day and 18 hours a week when there is no school they can work to 8 hours a day and 40 per week. Sixteen-and 17-year-olds may be employed for unlimited hours in any ocupation other than those declared hazardous by the Secretary of Labor.

    Yes; if you check with your high school Guidance Office and Ask how they can assitt with your job search. They may have postings for local businesses, for babysitting or for other part-time positions. 


  4. Can a teenager do any kind of work in your country? What types of work can they performed?
    You cannot work in a job that the Labor Department considers hazardous.
    Other wise you can work on anything.


  5. It is hard for a teenager to find a job.
    It is not alwayas as easy as it would seem for a teenager to get a job. There are laws restricting when you can work and what you can do. Teens hired for nonagricultural employment (which is just about everything other than farm work)must be at least fourteen.

    If you're younger than 18, you are not allowed to:

    • Drive a motor vehicle as a regular part of the job or operate a forklift at any time
    • Operate many types of powered equipment, such as a box crusher, meat slicer or circular saw
    • Work in wrecking, demolition, excavation or roofing
    • Work in mining, logging or a sawmill
    • Work in meat-packing or slaughtering
    • Work where there is exposure to radiation
    • Work where explosives are manufactured or stored 

    • To work safely you should keep in mind the following:
      • Follow all safety rules.
      • Use safety equipment and wear protective clothing when needed.
      • Keep work areas clean and neat.
      • Know what to do in an emergency.
      • Report any health and safety hazards to your supervisor.

  14. Which jobs/activities are prohibited for teenagers?
    Only the jobs that the Labor Department considers hazardous.


  15. Do teenagers receive training before starting a job?
    Yes in all the jobs you must have training before you can work by your self

    capacity for somework.
