During marching season we perform with the band in various competitions and parades. We do a routine to the music they play on the field and for parades we normally throw together a quick and easy routine, generally basics. After marching season ends we go into winterguard, or indoor guard. We practice twice a week to make and perfect a routine to take to Solo and Ensamble where we get rated as to how we perform, if our score is high enough we go to state competition.
Normally it is required for all participating members of the marching band colorguard to be in a band class. Hopefully next year we will have eurythmics again, if we don't then no one will be required to be in a band class but everyone must be at EVERY practice. Winterguard is not as time consuming. We practice twice a week, Wednesdays and Fridays from 2:30-4. After basket ball season most practices are in the gym where we will be learning a show, much like marching season, only alot less complicated. If you join during winterguard, and wish to be part of marching season, you wont have to try out to a flag routine but you will be required to come to the tryouts for the marching guard only because you must learn how to march correctly. If we have a decent size guard there will be at least 4 captains:
High Captain |
Oversees everyone. Her say is final except on costume decisions, which are made by the entire guard. Makes up and teaches routine, and helps drill captain set on the field and make up drill for winterguard.
Co-Captain |
Helps the captain out by keeping order amongst the team and helps make up and teach the routine. There may not be a co-captain every year.
Drill Captain |
Helps set colorguard on the field during marching season and writes (if possible) the drill for winterguard.
Dance Captain |
Makes up and teaches all dance moves to entire guard. |
Tryouts will always be the last week in April or the first week of May. Everyone will find out if they made it the next school day after final tryouts. In order to try out everyone will be taught a routine and then perform it in for the instructor, captain, and her co-captain(s) in small groups. The bigger the colorguard, the better. Our biggest colorguard (for marching band) was 8, our biggest for winterguard was 16 (most of which were band kids) We are hoping for a decent turn out this year.
