Styles for Teaching

Here is a brief   overview of styles of home educating teaching methods and more will be added. You can use the links to investigate further or you can use a search engine and discover more for yourself.  There are plenty of books out there and free info on the web.

Self Taught

The most commonly used curriculum for this Ancient sytle of teaching which is becoming a hit for many different types of homeschooling families is the robinson curriculum.  This stlyle could not be defined as a style of teaching rather a style of learning.  The student is encouraged to Read,wRite and do aRithmetic by themselves and learn allow the brain to develop the skills needed to solve problems and learn.  Many parents who thus find themselves redundent of teaching duties are free to fulfill the demands they have on their time for me this is learning also!  There are no lesson plans just very good literature which you print of or get from the library.  The suggested Math would be Saxon.  The cost for the robsinson curriculum is a one off cost for all grades which is worked through at the pace of your child.  The cd's have all the books (full editions) which can be printed.

Unschooling

Learning to trust the childs natural learning processes.  Develop, encourage and stimulate the enjoyment of learning through everyday experiences and reading.  A hands on approach.  John Holt has written and researched this style and his work would benefit all.

Hebraic

The Hebraic approach is a return to the teaching methods of God focusing on the family and the Word of God.  History, geography, science, phonics, life skills and even math from and through a Biblical perspective.  This approach recognises the strength of the created individual whom God has created for a purpose.  Learning wisdom rather than knowledge and Gods veiw rather than philosophies.

Classical

The Classical approach is a return to the 'original' Greek methods of teaching.  Encouraging students to gain knowledge and analytical/thinking tools equipping the children for life.

There are so many that a search engine will take you on a years tour!

There are many resources that you can find online which would allow you to do much with just a printer and interenet connection.

BBC and Channel four also have great educational sections which are definately worth time spent.

Misc

There must be other 'styles' of teaching so let me know if you have discovered one I have not thought of here.  I do a mixture so have no real title for my style!
