Starlit Tote

Starlit Tote by Cecilia C Ranger

Multiples 2+1

Materials:

Hook size: H

Bernat Satin yarn: one skein each of sterling (MC), silk (CC)

(worsted weight yarn)

4 - Ύ” D-rings

4 - safety pins

Tape measure

Tapestry needle

Swivel hook (optional)

Bag measure approx 10” x 12”

Gauge is not important.

Tips:

Weave in ends as you go.

The “ch 1” in the beginning of a row does not count as a stitch unless otherwise instructed.

All sewing is done with MC.

Body:

With MC, ch 81

Rows 1-4: ch 1, sc in each stitch across, turn. (80 sc)

Row 5: ch 1, (dc in next two stitches, sc in next two stitches) repeat to end, do not end off. Do not turn.

Row 6: Go to beginning of R5 and attach CC to top of 1st dc, ch 1 and sc in 1st dc, sc in next dc, (dc in next two sc, sc in next two dc) repeat to last two sc. Dc in last two sc, do not end off.

Row 7: Pick up MC and yo with MC to pull through CC. Drop CC but do not end off.

(Sc in next two dc, dc in next two sc) repeat to end. Do not end off. Do not turn.

Row 8: Go to beginning of previous row and pick up CC through 1st stitch of MC.

Ch 1, (dc in next 2 sc, sc in next 2 dc) repeat to end. After completing last sc, pull MC through CC and drop CC. Do not end off.

Row 9: Ch 1, turn, repeat R7 but do dc in sc and sc in dc

Row 10: repeat Row 8

Continue in pattern to desired height or until bag measures 11” from bottom ending with MC. Continue with MC for one more row in sequence (dc in sc and sc in dc). End off CC, leaving about 8” for weaving in end.

Using 4 safety pins, mark the points where you would like the handles to be. An easy way to mark is to fold the rectangle with the seam in the middle (back of bag) and then using a tape measure, mark off (place safety pin) 2” from each side.

Next row: (Right side of bag is facing you) Ch 1, sc until the mark for D-ring, while holding D-ring against the fabric, place the next 3 sc through three stitches and around the D-ring. Continue this way to the end of the row. Do not end off.

The flat part of the D-ring (bottom) should be on the inside of the handbag. Remove the safety pins and use to hold the back seam closed for sewing. Place right sides together.

End off last stitch leaving approx. 2 feet for weaving in later. Cut yarn and pull through last sc to secure. Then using a tapestry needle, sew back seam closed.

Remove safety pins and with the bag still inside out, place safety pins to mark the corners at a slant (up 1” and over 1”) of approx. a 45 degree angle. Using the 2 feet of MC, sew bottom closed starting at the top of the angle working down o the bottom and across to the top of the other angle.

Alternative bottom: Forget the angles and just stitch straight across the bottom to close.

* For a more opened bottom, a piece of plastic mesh may be placed in the bottom of the bag.

Handles: make 2

Leave about 12” of yarn before chaining 100. Sc across to end. Do not turn, sc in side and then sc in foundation back loops. End off, leaving approx 12” for fastening to handbag.

Attach handles to bag.

Optional front swivel hook:

Make 4 sc around circle of hook. Rows 1-14: sc. Attach to handbag. Stitch hook to bag.
