Ceci's Gardens in Duluth Minnesota -- May - July, 2006

This is our back patio, at the end of May and below you see how it looked July 19.

The  back of the house from outside the arbor on May 29th and below on July 19th. We put up this fence and arbor in August 2004.

The clematis have reached the top and seem to be at a loss for what to do next.

Here's the garden looking in through the arbor. The bed on the far right that connects the shrub bed with the one by the fence is new. It gets the most sun, so I have planted Shasta Daisies, Echinacea, and some annuals in this area. The shrubs just below the patio are Viburnum trilobum Alfredo and Weigela Wine and Roses.

The Shasta daisies really did well in their first year. There is a 'Baby's Breath' that has flopped over in front of them.

Looking left from the walk, the nepeta 'Walkers Low' are overwhelming the rose 'Bonica'; behind them Baby's Breath, thalictrum, monarda, and some annuals. And on the fence trumpet vine.

I planted 6 different Heuchera here. I thought I should just get two or three varieties, but couldn't make up my mind, so bought one each of 7 varieties. They are called 'Green Mist', 'Obsidian', 'Amethyst Myst', 'Sparkling Burgundy', 'Raspberry Ice', and 'Peach Flambé'

Here's a close-up of the 3 on the left, taken July 19th.

This corner may have changed the most in 8 weeks. May 25th above and July 19th below.

Those yellow daisies are almost the only flowers I have that I didn't plant. They were there when we moved in. I planted some annual cosmos in front of them, but they haven't done well. I need another perennial for this sunny corner.

Behind the garage I've planted Cimifuga 'Brunette' (bugbane) (left); in front of those 3 Astilbe 'Sprite'; on the right a Pee Gee Hydrangea; and in front of it 2 Heuchera 'Marmalade'

I bought the 2 little Heuchera 'Marmalade' at different nurseries. You can see that the smaller one has grown to the size of the bigger one, by now, but I paid more for the smaller one, so I don't know what conclusions I can draw.
I'm so pleased that the Pee Gee is going to bloom this season.

Annabelle hydrangea in May above and in July below. This is a reliable plant for our climate.

In back Aruncus 'Zweiweltenkind' - middle Astilbe - front Heucherella 'Rosalie'. The Astilbe and Heucherella were purchased in 2001, and moved here in 2004. The Aruncus were purchased and planted here in 2004. On the left are 2 Heuchera June Bride (I think).

July 19 - Heuchera June Bride' in bloom, astilbe 'Strassenfelder'

The aruncus and heucherella bloomed in June.

A big cedar tree provides shade for about 1/3 of he back yard. I've planted a number of shade plants here. So far the Lamium seems to be the happiest.

Some plants in this area haven't filled out as much as expected. I have seen great big Alchemilla mollis in my neighborhood, but mine are still quite small. The other plant that is small is Sweet Woodruff. And I expect the hostas to get bigger in coming years. Maybe this area just needs more time.

The front of the house

The house faces southwest, so we get morning sun in the back and afternoon sun in the front.

May 22 - just after planting these pots.

Each pot contains 1 Dracaena Indivisa (spikes), 1 Coleus 'Religious Radish' and 2 New Guinea Impatiens.

The impatiens and coleus have done well.

Astilbe in bloom; hosta coming into bloom; some lamium still have flowers; dicentra have been finished for some time now, but are still green.

Hosta and Lamium 'Silver Beacon' and 'White Nancy' around base of amur maple.

This is what they looked like in June and they still look about the same, though the hosta will be blooming soon. The white edged ones come up first but the green ones are bigger when they come up.
