Annual Meeting of All Burma Federation of Student Unions – Foreign Affairs Committee
1. 2004 Annual Meeting of the All Burma Federation of Student Unions - Foreign Affairs Committee was successfully held in December 19-21 at the Thai-Burma border. At the meeting, the present political situation and developments were discussed and analyzed by the Committee members. Then, the upcoming activities were laid down and elected the Committee's leadership for 2004-2005 activities.
2. At the meeting, we concluded our vision on present political situation as follows:
(a) National League for Democracy led by Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and Committee Representing People Parliament are the forefront of democracy movement of Burma, and the main stakeholder of Burma's political transition. The current regime namely themselves as the State Peace and Development Council is also the decisive body to forward the country with peaceful democracy transition in Burma. However, they still use violent methods and insincerity acts upon the democracy forces instead of holding meaningful dialogue to solve the problems in Burma.
(b) All nationalities and national forces including democracy groups and ethnic forces must be allowed to freely participate in peaceful political activisms.
(c) In any political framework of roadmap, the 1990 general election result must be honored in the process and national reconciliation must be realized with all major stakeholders.
(d) The independent civil organizations including the student unions must be allowed to be active during the transitional process to democracy.
(e) The All Burma Federation of Student Unions - Foreign Affairs Committee will maintain its active participation in Forum for Democracy in Burma (FDB) so as to be a platform for a strong exile force of Burma's democracy movement.
3. The All Burma Federation of Student Union is deeply concerning on the lack of free primary education and quality education in Burma, though Burma is a state party to the United Nation's Child Rights Convention (CRC) and the current government is mostly responsible to fulfill those needs.
