Tamanthi hydro-project preliminary works underway

Homalin (Burma), Jan 8

The initial stage of the hydro-electric project, in the upper Sagaing Division of Burma, is underway. Engineers and other experts are sent to the site for preliminary survey and other necessary steps that needed to be done, reported Kukiforum News correspondent via telephone.

This unprecedented project for the region is the result of General Than Shwe, Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council (SPDC), visit to India from October 24 to 29, 2004. Of the three significant agreements signed by the two countries, this hydro-electric was one of Indian government's cordial gestures shown to its neighbor. The other two signed agreements are - non-traditional security issues and cultural exchange program (2001-2006).

Tamanthi region is one of the most neglected and least developed parts of the country. Although the Kukis constitute the larger group, the area is populated by diverse ethnic groups of people. Reactions from the public are varied. While some welcome the program enthusiastically, others are concerned that the work will entail the authority to exact forced labors from the local people.

One resident in the area requesting his name not to be made public said, "We are happy equally as we are concerned at the project." Burma has been known for its excessive use of forced labor by many international human rights' organizations and the International Labor Organization.
