Burma will convert 5,200 trucks and buses to run on natural gas this year, according to the
government’s official newspaper New Light of Myanmar.
Burma has more than 940,000 gasoline and diesel vehicles and 56% of them are in Rangoon.
Burma imports about $250 million worth of gasoline and diesel annually from Malaysia. Burma possess
twomajor natural gas fields, one in the Bay of Bengal with an estimated reserve of up to 396 billion cubic meters
and the other in the Gulf of Martaban with a reserve of 275 billion cubic meters.
The government has been promoting the use of CNG as an alternative fuel for vehicles since August last year.
Last month, Burma announced it will import 1,200 CNG-powered vehicles as part of its campaign to utilize
the country’s own natural resources.
