Agua Viva - One family helping families

David Townsends Visit to Belo

Visit to Brazil August 2004

I am very humbled to be able to go to Brazil and visit Danny and Sandra O’Brien, members of Mount Pleasant Baptist  Church Barry South Wales and missionaries to Brazil. They are working in the Favela’s [SLUMS] of Belo Horizonte. AugAvivA  [Living Steams Community Centre] One Family helping Families.

My purpose is to make a video of the work Danny and Sandra do along with their adopted son, 10 year old Lucas, an honorary member of Mount Pleasant. This little family is part of our family here, helping so many of the underprivileged families in the Favellas of the Belo Horizonte[beautiful mountains] region of Brazil. I will make the video available to the Churches as the Lord leads.

How did I come to go to Brazil?

I still do not understand, but I am so humbled and privileged to have this opportunity to serve our Lord in this way.

I was reading my bible one day in June when an overwhelming desire came over me to help Danny O’Brien in some way. I believe this was a word from God to me about Psalm 37 and Psalm 73 as it came to me. Although the psalm is about a meditation upon the prosperity of the wicked. The psalmist was certainly troubled by the prosperity and power of wicked men, but he believed this to be only a temporary reversal of true values. The psalm of course should be read alongside Psalm 73, where the issue is seen [verse 17] from a spiritual and not a material standpoint. ”Till I entered the sanctuary of God, then I understood their final destiny”. The problem is that of an apparent inversion of morality and success in the life of this world, evil men prosper while godly men are often in serious distress and need. Facing the problem of life’s inequalities in initial emphasis is negative [fret not, be not envious], but the principal stress is on the positive actions of Trust, Take delight in, Commit, Be still, Wait. All in connection with the sufficiency and goodness of the Lord.

As I read psalm 37 it was if Danny was surround by evil [with all the drug problems alcohol shootings etc, around him. He had gone from a comfortable home in Barry to the Favela’s of Brazil to experience the poverty and desperation of the people of Belo Horizonte, [He and his family have been through some difficult times lately] but verse one tells us “not to fret”.

Verse 3 Danny is trusting the Lord and doing a great work, because AugAvivA is “The Safe Pasture” He delights in the Lord. As I read this I felt a great desire of heart to go to Brazil. Because this has been a desire of my heart to go to Brazil I committed this to the Lord and to trust in him which way I should go. [v 5/6]” Commit your way to the Lord trust in him and he will do this. He will make your righteousness shine like the dawn the justice of your cause like the noonday sun”.

Verse 7 Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him. Over these past weeks I have been playing on my keyboard over and over again “BE STILL AND KNOW THAT I AM GOD” .The Lord has reveal to me that I should go to Brazil. As we see in verses 23 and 24, the Lord delights in a mans way. God has opened up a way for me to go to Brazil; yes there have been stumbles, with all the flights I tried. Some could only take me to Sao Paulo from London [with my air miles but still two expensive]. Some via Paris or Madrid and still so expensive it was out of reach for me. Then God revealed a travel agent who could fly me from Cardiff to Belo Horizonte just within my budget. The Travel agent asked me this question; ARE YOU FLEXABLE WHEN YOU CAN GO TO BRAZIL, The answer I gave was YES within a few days.

My first date was Thursday August 5th to the 18th. He said could you go on Saturday August 7th. Well I had set a budget in my mind and because I was flexible to go on the Saturday August 7th and return on August 21st instead of Thursday August 5th and return on 18th as originally planned I had a reduced rate and it was just below my budget. This was also another confirmation that I should go. “PRAISE THE LORD” what a God we have, praise his name. Now I want to go back to verse 6 “He will make your righteousness shine like the dawn.

As I start my flight I need to be at Cardiff Airport about 04:30 for the flight at 05:55 on August 7th.As the dawn breaks I shall be on my way to Brazil, SHINING IN GOD’S GLORY.

I pray that as I go to Brazil, the needs of AugAvivA  [LIVING STREAMS COMMUNITY CENTRE] will be met to the Glory of God.

When I told Danny I would be coming to Brazil he was so thrilled with the news, I two was very encouraged by his reply to me and I share this with you.

In Danny’s words, We are so thrilled at your news, and always in Awe of Our of Our Mighty God.

Three things happen when you pursue God with All of your heart.

[1] You step into the spiritual realm where “ All things are possible,[MK 10:27] Jesus looked at them and said” With man this is impossible, but not with God: All things are possible with God.

[2] You grow in character, for you become like the company you keep,[ 2Cor 3:18 ] And we who with unveiled faces all reflect the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into His likeness with ever increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is spirit.

[3] You learn that certain levels of blessing are never received unless you seek God for them diligently [Heb 11:6 ] And without Faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who earnestly seek Him.

Dave, You didn’t want human answers, you needed more than just good advice. You got close to God and you heard Him speak to you, then you put your Faith into action, and God is pouring out His Favour by your obedience, AMEN!!

These words from Danny really encouraged me and it was another confirmation that this trip to Brazil will be to God’s Glory.

Even when I ordered the Brazilian currency, which I had never seen before, on the right hand side of the note there was a circle just like the sun with a clear centre as if the sun was shinning through, which reminded me of Psalm 37 verse 6 “The justice of your cause like the noonday sun”.

I am so thrilled to be able to serve God in this way and pray that many people will see the video I will be making and be blessed by it.

In the Lord’s service.
