Cheerleading at Charles Best has been around for 4 years but never had an active competition team until 2002-2003. In that year the team attended a few competitions with their coaches Heather Hird and Jaya Panwar. This paved the way for cheerleading as a sport at the school.
The 2003-2004 team began with goals of hitting a routine in front of a crowd, attending all local competitions, and sticking together as a team for an entire season the Charles Best Cheer Team, but they outshone their own expectations. Under the guidance of their coaches Jaya Panwar and Marsha Matheson, they built a reputation for themselves as one of B.C.s stronger varsity teams, by competing strongly and placing in all but one of the local competitions they entered.
All their hard work paid off when the team qualified and got the chance to compete in the USA Nationals in Anaheim in March 2004. Experiencing American cheerleading in person was the perfect close to an amazing season, and the memories of the trip will serve as motivation for the future of the program.
Hoping to build on last seasons many successes; they expanded the program with the addition of a JV team, coached by two graduating members of the 2003-2004 team, Laura Patten and Danielle Tremblay.
Due to coaching changes, the team now has a new makeup and a new set of coaches. Li Peterson, former coach of Port Moody Sr., SFU red (national) and current VAS Open Elite All-girl coach. Ms. P is honoured and excited to have the opportunity to head coach such a great program. Assistant coaches, Jessica Gomes and Oliver Podwysocki, both national championship winning athletes, could not be more excited to work with this motivated group of athletes. Both the team and the coaches are very excited about this upcomming season and cannot wait to see where our hardwork and dedication can take us.d
