Jade

** Jade has been STOLEN
from our rescue**
Jade is in need of medical care.  She was last seen wearing a matching collar/leash that is red and white with hearts on it.  If anyone sees Jade, please contact our rescue at 708.426.3059 or email at cause4paws@gmail.com
You can also contact Lockport Police Dept at 815.838.2131
Update 11/16/08: Jade has recently been seen in the possession of the thief in the 1000 block of Washington in Lockport, IL and the area of 106th and Central in Chicago Ridge, IL.
Please help us get Jade back so she can get the medical attention she needs!

Somebody knows where Jade the three-legged dog is. But that somebody isn't talking. Jade, a pit bull who lost a leg after being hit by a car, was taken in by Cause 4 Paws, a Calumet City animal rescue group, said Linda Bober, the organization's president.

Bober now regrets it.

"I don't know where she's keeping the dog," Bober said.

Neither do the Lockport police. They arrested Bernard on a misdemeanor theft charge Nov. 27. But Bernard clammed up when asked to divulge the dog's location, said police Sgt. Preston Frye.

"She is refusing to say where the dog is," Frye said.

Bernard says she told police exactly where the dog went. Besides, she said, she never stole the dog in the first place. She returned it, even though it wasn't easy, she says.

Eventually, Bernard said, Cause 4 Paws volunteer Jennifer Williams, acting at the behest of Bober, took possession of the dog. Williams and Bober deny this.

Bernard says Jade was turned over to her with a broken hip and inadequate pain medication. But Bober says the dog's hip was not broken.

Bernard is due in court on the theft charge next month. She does not think she can afford to retain an attorney.

"It's a little scary," she said.

Jade is a 1.5 year old Pit Bull mix that we unexpectedly took into our rescue on 10/25 after a tragic turn of events.  Jade and another dog were loose and both were hit by a car in front of Jennifer's rural home (she is one of our foster homes).  The Rott mix that Jade was with was killed in the accident and Jade was badly injured.  Jennifer rushed Jade to the emergency vet.  At this point we did not know who the dogs belonged to.  We later found out that the owner is in California living in a place where pets are not allowed while her husband is deployed to Iraq.  She left Jade in the care of someone here and Jade and the other dog (not owned by Jade's owner) got loose.  They cannot have the dog where they live nor can they afford the enormous medical bills for this so they reluctently signed Jade over to us so that we can do what is in her best interest.

Jade spent the night at the emergency vet on morphine until we could get her to our vet today (10/26/08).  The ER vet closed a huge gash on one of her hind legs and tended to numerous patches of road rash.  She was transferred to our vet first thing Sunday and they did Xrays and determined that both hind legs are broken. One has a small bone in the foot broken and the vet said it will heal on it's own.  The other leg is shattered in many pieces.  After consulting with the vet, we decided she stands a better chance if the leg is amputated rather than trying to put the many tiny fragments back together.  As you can imagine, our bill is mounting.  The ER vet bill was over $500 and the bill at our vet is climbing as I type.

                       FIONA

UPDATE:  I am very sad to report that Fiona lost her battle with heartworm on 11.18.08.  She was a wonderful dog and we feel blessed to have had her in our lives even for a short time.  Please follow the link on the bottom to donate in loving memory of Fiona

Fiona is the newest addition to our Cause4Paws family and our special needs baby.  Fiona came to us from animal control in Mississippi with what we thought was case of heartworm not yet in the blood stream.  Upon arrival to Chicago Fiona was found to have a much more serious case of heartworm.  Fiona went through a week of intense treatment at the animal hospital before being released to her very happy foster family.  Fiona spent a week enjoying her couch potato life and recuperating in a wonderful home.  In the time she was at home Fiona showed how much she loves to snuggle and wants to be your constant companion.  Fiona discovered she really enjoys a snausage and a good belly scratch.  After a week of enjoying the good life, our poor baby Fiona took a turn for the worse.  Fiona is now back at the animal hospital doing her doggy best to recover.  The doctors are keeping her stable while the dead worms work their way out of her system.  While Fiona fights for her life the medical bills keep rising.  Please help us continue to fight for this wonderful little dog.

              NEWS

On August 28th, our rescue began working a Humane Case.  We found ourselves answering a call for help in a community that is beyond poor and very uneducated about proper care for animals.  Someone contacted us because the owner of these animals is in the hospital in a coma (brain cancer) and is not going to recover.  They are reaching our for help for his animals and that is where we come in.  They have several mixed breed dogs of varying ages as well as at least 6 pups that are about 8 weeks old.  None of them have ever seen a vet, most have never been handled and all have lived outdoors to fend for themselves.   It is a sad situation.  We took a horse from them that is about 100 lbs underweight and has several minor issues but it all costs money!  They are allowing us to take the dogs a couple at a time.  We took two puppies and upon closer evaluation, we discovered they were terribly flea infested, full of internal parasites and have skin problems. Both had to have their tails amputated.  The two pups alone in one day have us at a $700 vet bill!!!! There are many more dogs over there that need our help and the horse and the pups alone are a huge burden on our small rescue.  We have since also been asked for help by a neighbor with his dogs!  He has a litter that is 2 weeks old and a litter born the morning we were there!  After talking to him, he wants to do the right thing and spay his dogs.  We want to help him before this terrible cycle continues.  These dogs deserve better but we cannot do it alone!  We need help and we are literally on our knees begging right now.  These people are reaching out for our help and these dogs need help.  I realize we can't save all the dogs in the world but we can save those right in front of us.  A very wise young lady recently told me that "Every dog is like a book, they all have a story to tell" and believe me when I say...there is library waiting for us to hear their stories!
We need:
*Topical Flea Applications (Frontline would be great but cheaper stuff will do...Biospot etc but please, no Hartz products)
*Quality Dog Food (they have been eating Dollar Store food and not that often)
*Spay/Neuter vouchers
*Gift Cards for PetCo, Petsmart or Walmart to help us get supplies
*Capstar (oral flea killer)
*Blankets
*Foster Homes!
*ADOPTERS
*Donations for Vet Bills!!!!!!
Any help is appreciated.
Items can be sent to
Cause 4 Paws Rescue and Humane Society
PO Box 24

and our site has info and our paypal link.
Thank you, Thank you, Thank you.
Whether you can help out now or not, please forward this to all you know.

SOUTH HOLLAND DOGS NEED HELP!

The recent dog fighting case in South Holland saved 37 dogs from a life of hell but now they need help!

A very small group of concerned rescuers have gone above and beyond to temperment test, transport and house these dogs so that they can have a chance at a normal life.

Click here to watch CBS coverage of the story

For more info on the South Holland dogs that still need help, please visit: www.thetruthaboutpitbulls.com

****This Dog is NOT available for adoption and is NOT located at the rescue.****

I look into your eyes and I see the pain. The pain that your owners have put you through.

With your numerous scars, infected wounds, and 1/2 of your ear missing, people pay to watch you fight, pay to watch you hurt, and like what they see.

I hate people like that, the people who turn pit bulls into fighting machines! I hate the people who ruin the reputation of such a wonderful breed.

I look into your eyes and I see the love you have inside you. The wag of your tail and your grunts as I give you a belly rub, the gentleness of your touch when I hand you a treat.

I look into your eyes and I see your life on a logging chain with padlocks around your neck, with never anyone to love on you and pet you.

I look into your eyes and KNOW there will be many more like you and it makes me sick to my stomach.

I look into your eyes and I promise you that there are good people who don't do this to animals and we will all fight to stop this animal cruelty, it may take years, but one day, we will accomplish this goal.

Please if you have any information on pit bull fighting in your area, contact the police immediately and/or contact your local shelter with information.

The Humane Society of the Unites States offers a $2,500.00 reward for information leading to the prosecution of these people.

Pit bulls are wonderful dogs if raised correctly and are submissive to humans; they are not instinctually aggressive.

I have met NUMEROUS pit bulls that do wonderfully with other dogs and are great with children!

                                       &

AJ is a beautiful reddish/fawn boy with gorgeous green eyes! AJ is about 1 year old but small for his age as he had very poor nutrition and was quite malnourished.

He is one of the South Holland dogs.

Update: Dec 3rd, 2008-

AJ had surgery to repair his ruptured Cruciate. It was a very difficult surgery as the damage was extensive. He came home two days later and is resting comfortable on a dog bed in the living room. He hates the cone on his head but it is a necessary evil for now.

Update: Dec 9th, 2008-

AJ is getting around really well. The first few days were tough but is slowly getting better. I know he will be so glad to get the cone off his head! He goes back to the vet on the 15th for a wound check and they will probably remove the sutures then too.

Update: Dec 15th, 2008-

AJ went back to the vet today to get a his leg checked. He is looking good, sutures came out but he still has the cone head so he isn't happy about that but overall, I am happy that he is in the mend. We have to be so careful going outside though with the ice and snow. A bad slip could throw everything right out of wack again so I got a big container of the Ice Melt for Pets to make sure everything is ice-free for AJ! He has to return to the vet in another two weeks

Welcome
