"What???"
That's what most people ask when I tell them what I do. I'm the Victim/Witness Coordinator at the Grant County Prosecutor's Office in Washington State.
Basically, I work with victims of all types of crimes...from burglery to sexual assault to the families of homicide victims...and help them through the criminal justice process. I keep them informed of what is going on, let them know when court dates are, schedule and go to interviews (for defense and prosecution) with them, get their opinions about possible plea agreements, go to hearings/trial with them, and help them prepare statements for the judge at sentencing. Okay, that is pretty simplified...I do a ton of other stuff as well, but it's kind of hard to explain. Anyway...if it involves a victim, it usually involves me.
I bet you didn't know there was anyone who does what I do. If that's the case, I'm glad because it means you haven't had to find out. Working with victims can be very challenging, especially since the system is built around the defendant and his/her rights...not the victim's rights. But, I LOVE my job! It stresses me out, but in the end, I get to help people through one of the most difficult times of their lives. I feel like I make a difference and that's what I want to do.
