What Happens When I Bring My Pet To Be Put To Sleep?

All of us at Castle View Vets appreciate that making the decision to have your pet put to sleep can be an extremely traumatic experience. If you wish to talk your thoughts through with one of us please do not hesitate to make an appointment so we can talk through your wishes in privacy.

Once you have made the decision and made an appointment with one our vets you may want to think about what you want to do with your pet’s remains. Some people like to take their pet home to bury them in the garden whilst others may not have the room to do that. If you want us to take care of your pet then there are a number of different options available.

We use a crematorium called ‘’Rossendale Pet Crematorium and Memorial Gardens”, based in Rossendale in Lancashire. You can choose to have your pet cremated individually and receive their ashes back, either to keep in a casket or to scatter, perhaps somewhere near your pet’s favourite spot. If you do not want to receive the ashes back then you can choose to have your pet go for a communal cremation where they are cremated with other pets. You can choose to attend your pet’s cremation, please inform the surgery if you wish to do so and we can make appropriate arrangements.

If you wish to have your pet buried but have nowhere to do so at home we can also arrange burial at the crematorium’s Memorial Gardens. You can choose to mark the grave with flowers or a headstone if you wish, or simply leave the grave unmarked. You can attend the burial of your pet if you wish.

On the day of the procedure you can either choose to be present or to leave your pet with us. We will give your pet an injection, which is similar to an overdose of anaesthetic and your pet, will simply drift off to sleep. You are welcome to spend as much time as you want with your pet afterwards, and some people choose to take their pet’s collar or a swatch of hair with them as a memento.

However you choose to let your pet go please be assured that we will do whatever we can to help it happen as easily as possible for you. If requested by prior arrangement we can come to your home to put your pet to sleep, please discuss this with a receptionist.
