Carter Reservoir Mustang Registry
When the BLM went into the Carter Reservoir HMA that hadn’t had a gather for over 16 yrs, they found beautiful, uniquely colored bands of Wild Mustangs. Approximately 85% were heavily Dun Factored Duns. When we saw these Mustangs with their zebra striped legs, shoulder bars, stripes on their necks, black tipped ears, cob webbing, some even had the barb stripes off of their dun stripe, we knew we were looking at something special. When the DNA report came back from Dr. Gus Cothran of the University of Kentucky, it proved what we had hoped would be. The report shows the Carter Reservoir Mustangs to have 3 Spanish Markers, one being a Rare Old World Spanish marker not found in North American Stock. With approximately only 25 of the Carter Reservoir mustangs left out in the wild in 2003, we started the Carter Reservoir Mustang Registry to save the bloodlines of these rare beautiful Mustangs.
The Carter Reservoir Mustangs were adopted out of Palomino Valley NV starting in Aug. 2003. , Ridge Crest holding facility from Oct 2003 -, they were also adopted at the Oct. 2003 Descanso Adoption, the Feb 2004 Tulare Adoption, the March 2004 Santa Maria Adoption, April 2004 Lake Perris Adoption and some misc. re-adoptions since then.
At the 2003 Gather there were apprx 211 horses gathered. 13 were returned to the wild. 7 studs, one being a weanling at his mothers side and 6 mares. There were to be 7 mares re-released but one broke her leg while being loaded and had to by put down. There was a band of approx. 12 horses left ungathered at the time of the 2003 round-up. In 2005 there were 2 new foals seen, one with a broken leg and did not survive. 2006 there were apprx 4 new foals seen, 2007 there were 6 new foals seen one being Fawn's Pinto Baby. Fawn was the Pinto Filly that jumped the gather fence to freedom, leaving behind in the gather corrals Luna, her Pinto Mother, and her little Pinto weanling brother.
