This question i muse over when we get a thumping from teams like Dunfermline, this i say in jest, but to myself and thousands more fans from Ulster there is a strong feeling of shared identities with those who make their way down Edmiston Drive. Many may say that the common thread is Sectarian bigotry, an argument that could be equally voiced towards fans of Glasgow Celtic, it is true that growing up as a lad here in the pre-dominality Protestant town of Carrickfergus you supported one of the top English sides such as Liverpool or Manchester United, but 9/10 would have RFC/RANGERS or something pro Rangers marked on their schoolbags, this has been my personal experience. To attempt to counter the Bigots theory, I could sit here for hours giving numerous examples of reasons why I feel this not to be the case, well not entirely, Dedicated fans of any club who rise from their beds at 5am to set off on a ferry crossing across the Irish Sea to witness 90 minutes of football against a team such as St Mirren must have more than blind bigotry guiding them, add to that perhaps a crossing in mid-January when the boat gets threw about like a ride at Alton Towers, bigots? bloody masochists more like!
But we do it season after season, Members of our Club can spend hours talking about games they witnessed the likes of Baxter, Cooper, Goram, McCoist, Laudrup and Gazza et al. We can talk of glorious victories as if they were yesterday, there will always be glory days with a club such as Rangers, however the true fan weathers every storm, this is our aim.
Some say the Auld Firm game is the greatest Club fixture in the world, certainly its hard to beat when you are on top! Both fans are passionate and the Stadiums take on the presence of a Colluseum, yes the air is rank with hatred, so much so that the Sectarian bigotry charge arises, but to those constantly sniping at Old Firm fans could I ask that they broaden their horizons and investigate the goings-on at games such as Man Utd v Leeds, Roma v Lazio, Barcelona v Real Madrid etc etc etc, it is the passion from these fans that makes the matches so memorable, yes an ingredient to that passion is hatred which emerges in adversity, but its not exclusive to Glasgow teams by any means, sure it can be found in a park anywhere when two sides line-up against each other.
Follow Follow, we will follow Rangers, everywhere, anywhere, we will follow on.
