Guitars and hippies

Jan 10, 2006

Guitar players are a dime a dozen these days but guitar players who play for a legitimate love of music seem to be at a premium. To many guys pick up an instrument just so they can pick up girls. Any idiot can pick up a guitar and learn a Nirvana song within a few days and settle with that. Sadly most girls are fooled by this and mistake it for talent. What does that say about the girls being wooed by such garbage? Not much and if this lame clones and oblivious girls business continues music will be a shadow of what it was in the past. Most instruments are easy to learn but very hard to master. Sadly most people don't advance to part two and the quality of music has taken a huge hit in the past few years because of this. There are far to many Kurt Cobain, John Mayer and sad emo boy clones out there turning out cookie cutter bull shit while lacking in creativity and personality.

For every self actualized hippie there are probably 9 that are confused, lost, drugged out dead beats (or some combination of the three). Many of the hippies I have met in my life were judgmental "holier than thou" types who fell into typical patterns of behavior, acting out well known cliches of what it is to be a "hippie": Dreads, listening to phish, smoking pot, wearing hemp and so forth. None of those are bad, far from it, but they certainly aren't essential to the true hippie life style. All you need is an open, accepting mind. Many of the people I have talked to who grew up in the 60s agree that it is a time period that has been grossly glorified. There certainly were some innovative minds, like any time period, but the masses of self actualized people seems to be more of a myth.

Carl's views on the world of Music

April 6, 2005

My recent musical interest has been Tom Waits. It seems like every year around this time I start to listen to him everyday for hours. I tell a lot of people about his music but sadly, I am usually met with blank stares. His music is real with raw emotions, dark and mysterious lyrics that are intriguing with instruments he makes himself. He is a talented musician in a musical world that is sadly, very bland. With all the generic rap and bull shit punk, it's refreshing to hear a man develop his own style. If you don't like him, it may be because you are blindly afraid of things that you are unsure of. People feel threatened by powerful, innovative ways of expression because they are not sure how to react in a way that is socially acceptable. Open your eyes and accept new possibilities with open arms when they come or your life will become very routine. Diversify yourself and you will have a lot to talk about with many different kinds of people. The people with the best tastes in music are never satisfied with staying put with one genre, its boring, like eating pizza every day. I know I get tired of people always mentioning 50 Cent or Greenday. It takes no effort to make conversation about them. Be different, be unique and bring up Tom Waits, Frank Zappa and avant garde geniuses, Can, to name a few. Show you have something to you, outside of popular media. Lets see some substance! Embrace music for its many forms and reject modern day rap, pop and emo. These genres have done music, as a whole, a dis-service and the longer this shit continues, the fewer choices we will have musically in the years to come. I could burn you five cds and not even touch the surface of the musical diversity in the 60s and 70s.

I know people who can't even comprehend the amazing talent that goes into fusion music and its sad that it sometimes goes unappreciated. To use a popular saying, It has flown over the heads of siblings, friends and girlfriends alike. But it's because it is new to their ears. It sure is something that grows on you, but give it a chance and you will get so much in return. The first time for anything is almost never you're best experience. Listening to fusion and the many other forms of musical expression in the classic rock age is much the same. In fact, fusion is so complex, you sometimes do not even hear all there is to hear in the first listen, or even the hundredth. I am still hearing new parts in my Mahavishnu Orchestra cd that I did not hear the first fifty listens. In fact, people are so used to hearing simple, repetitive drum beats and guitar riffs, that hearing talent is hard to get used to. Escaping popular music will thus, be long term as you adapt to the complex rhythms of music. I have turned some of my best friends onto some of the more obscure classic rock and it makes me happy that some people are accepting to music that is different.

Getting back to Tom Waits, he has a unique voice and I am not afraid to turn up the volume to drown out 50 cent from other rooms. Do I care what other may think, of course not because I am secure in who I am and what I like. Those who are not secure are held back and fail to develop musical interests past the what the popular media wants you to buy. I have over 3600 songs in a diverse array of genres that is ever expanding.

In closing, music is the ultimate conversation maker!  Get back to me with comments good or bad and I will post them all!

-My friend Tasha adds:

"Good strong points and backed up opinions... you are very right about the stereotypical music that floats through the radio waves.. its refreshing to see people listen to music that isnt mainstream, it shows a true compasion for music and all that it has to offer"

-My friend Rachel has this to say:

"You couldn't have put that any better, I agree with you 100%.  People are afraid of the unknown musically, emotionally and religiously.  But there are a few individuals like you who take the challenge and try something new and completely different.  I completely respect you for that"

Three bands Tasha recommends are:

1. Postal Service

2. Tristan Prettyman

3. The Smashing Pumpkins

My works sucks

March 27, 2005

Let me give some people a piece of advice, don’t become a telemarketer. Lets just say I’d rather work a 12 hour shift at my summer job, the doughnut shop, than suffer three hours at this place. Its not even the most intelligent work I can find. Anyone with half a brain and a little bit of charm can do it. Besides, I just don’t care about the school enough to ask graduates to slice into their already limited funds. In fact, it’s a ridiculous proposition.

I’m a student, I feel the pain of all the grads suffering from debt.  So helping the school obtain money is a terrible action on my part. Lets just say the school is already soulless, trust me, I can prove that too. But after seeing 23 and 24 year olds just out of college struggling to make a living, it really made me realize what a bastard I’ve been calling some of them in the past.  Does it really make sense to harass these people four or five times a week? We are as bad as stalkers. (I don’t even call my friends that much in a month!) Its no wonder most people don’t even pick up. These people have every right to be pissed at us and hang up.  In fact, I expect it. For some reason, my fellow co-workers seem appalled at any rudeness they receive. I have never complained about rude responses and it shocks me that some students still complain. These people paid upwards of 100 grand and are probably now thinking, "the school has the gall to ask for even more money?" Come on folks, these people have financially hit rock bottom in some respects, its probably takes them a whole lot of will power not to tell us to fuck off.

The worst part is, you get no incentive for bringing a lot of money in. I can put on the charm, I brought in $400 the first full night I was there. But when its all said and done, weather you bring in $700 or $20, you still get the same pay check. So I pretty much stopped calling people and just call my friends. I laugh at people who get happy over getting people to donations.  If you get paid the same regardless, just call friends and stop harassing people! The school is charging us so much money to go here, get some of it back by screwing them and don’t do work! For every dollar you get people to donate, you help only the school, not yourself!  I could rake in more money than anybody if you got rewarded extra for it. But the last few weeks I was at the job I was just apathetic and monotone averaging around $15-20.

Here’s a typical conversation:

Me: Hey, Is <insert name> there?

Person: Yeah, this is him, who is this?

Me: I’m Carl calling on behalf of UNE, (blah blah blah)

Person: Lets cut to the chase, you’re asking for donations, I’m 45 and I’m still paying up the ass.

Me: I understand, goodbye

Person: Maybe I’ll give $10

Me: I dunno man, UNE probably gave nothing back to you, and now their asking for more money?

Person: That’s true, plus you people called me seven times last Tuesday.

Me: Actually, I’m usually just calling friends to avoid such circumstances. But I still get a paycheck, so I’m just screwing the school a little, like they screwed me.

Person: haha, that’s funny. They can’t even get university workers to call us, they have to get poor unsuspecting students.

Me: Yeah, thanks for your time.

Person: haha, bye.

Yeah, that’s what happens if I talk to people, which is around five times a night. I like to switch things up and bring out random facts to remind people of how crappy the school is.  But it says a lot when an emotional person such as myself starts to feel like a robot here.  I'm glad I realized this job sucks before a lot of other people. If you are in a similar job, get out while you still can!

Sting is a stalker!

March 20, 2005

"Every breath you take, every move you make I'll be watching you."

Talk about a dependent little bastard! Sting is an obsessed psycho and I wouldn't let him near anyone that I cared about. Especially any girl I know, in fear that he would follow her home and watch her sleep through her window. Listen to his lyrics again, the man is a little to desperate, don't you think?! He has nothing better to do than watch a chick breath and perform mundane tasks like getting the mail (every step you take). This song was made for every peeping Tom who needed a reason for stalking.  At some point it just isn't love anymore. When you can't function for a day without seeing your significant other breath or go a few days without seeing her every move, than you have entered the realm of unhealthy obsession.

Sting is also an arrogant prick. Just because he is famous he thinks he can blatantly flaunt the fact that he is a stalker and get away with it because he is a famous Well, he may be right, but it's nothing to be proud of. If he was a random man on the streets of New York he'd be toothless.

More thoughts on college

March 3, 2005

So my school canceled classes the other day. Like everyone else, I was ecstatic for about a second, than went back to sleep. I awoke a few hours later and started to think. I bet on average, students miss ten classes a year. Now that’s not counting classes skipped because of laziness, just ones canceled due to snow or professors being absent for various reasons. Granted its nice to miss classes, but shouldn’t we be getting money back for classes that are canceled? If you break it down, you probably pay $100 a class. Missing ten classes would than equal $1000. Now that’s just an estimate, and probably a generous one (its’ probably more), but you are still giving up a lot of money for classes you never get back. With 1500 student missing 10 classes each because of 6 inches of snow or a sick professor, the school is gaining...well, it sickening number, I can’t even type it...But they gain this money for doing nothing! In any other profession this would be an outrage. Not many jobs let you sit on your ass and earn such a large sum of money. I’d rather trudge through the snow or deal with a sick professor than lose money. In some ways, college is a scam man! They make you pay all this money than cancel a few classes here, a few there, and make a little money on the side for doing nothing. Luckily you have people like me to point out these tragedies.

Valentines day part 2

Feb. 11, 2005

There are so many days to celebrate during the year. It seems like every other day there is something to celebrate, mostly because of the Jewish. Don't you people realize most of these days are just for companies to make money and empty the pockets of hard working Americans. Half of them are made up, and half assed I might add.  Take Valentines day, it isn't about love, its about companies such as hallmark and herseys to make money.

St. Patricks day isn't about being Irish, its for liqueur companies and bars across America to break even while all the Irish man empty their pockets and get more wasted then they have all year. A lot of these holidays and anniversaries share one thing in common, they are to damn materialistic!

Take relationships for instance.   If your relationship is based solely on one stupid rock than the relationship is bullshit. Try giving your girl a funyon or plastic ring. If she is cool and cares about you, she'll just laugh. If she's a leech (money wise) she'll flip out until you get her a diamond.  Than she'll say "that’s what I thought." Its just for her to show off to her friends.  In fact, do something personal this year. Cook dinner, bring her somewhere romantic or just be there and spend time with her! Boycott valentines day and don't buy anything! Within five years there won't be a valentines day as far as the companies are concerned! I bet they would ignore the holiday! Why do you think you see Christmas commercials and so much hype a week before thanksgiving? Because there is no money to made with thanksgiving. So companies start Christmas bull shit because thanksgiving is the one rare holiday that isn't really about material items, it's about being personal with people that are close to you.  Companies don't want people to be personal.  They don't give a shit about people.  They are in the holiday spirit for the all mighty dollar.  They want people to be materilistic and outdo their peers and spend money so so the comapny execs can be rich and laugh their asses off at us for being so naive.  Well, before I get ahead of myself, I'll leave you to think about what I have said.

Edit: I will admit, my gf at the time was so sick she was bed ridden, so I couldn't do anything for her.  This just adds towards my resentment for valentines.

Live Jornuals Suck

Feb. 3, 2005

Why people keep live journals is something I may never understand but it's something that has bothered me for a while. They are trendy, which is part of the reason. But that is always a bad reason to do anything. Instead of doing something all your friends are doing, be your own person and do something original. Does anyone really care about mundane events stated in an average live journal? If you are viewing your friends L.J. than you probably know all the details that are stated within the journal before reading it. There are so many ways to communicate that are much more effective; talking in person, on the phone or even on aim. Besides, journals are meant fo private thoughts so making the journal live totally kills the only point it has.  No one is going to make their private life public on the internet for thousands to see so the live journal is filled with pointless drivel that friends already know. And than there are the quizzes that people add to the journals. This is the person saying "I have nothing to say, nothing to offer so I will add this quiz as my entry for today." Last time I checked, journals are for personal expression so why are ten question quizzes telling you "how emo you are" placed in the journal? Usually it’s the people with the least amount of personality that take those quizzes. This just proves my point that live journals are worthless. Half the content isn’t even the authors original work.

100% of the content on this site is my own work and is me expressing how I feel, a concept lost on many live journal authors, as they lose themselves in another trend. Are there any live journal authors that think they can match me and my 100% originality? Drop me a line.
