Bajo el auspicio del Programa de Pequeños Subsidios y el Fondo Global para el Medio Ambiente, Ecomar, Inc. y la Comunidad de Carenero desarrollan el Proyecto: Por un turismo sostenible en la observación de ballenas jorobadas desde Carenero. El proyecto incluye -entre sus múltiples actividades- un Programa de Monitoreo de las Ballenas Jorobadas con estudiantes locales, extendiendo así a esta comunidad el trabajo que desde 1999 viene realizando el  CEBSE en la región. Este programa es atendido por la Dra. Liliana Betancourt, Vice-Presidenta del Programa EcoMar, Inc. investigadora y profesora, con una vasta experiencia en la formación de jóvenes samanenses, reconocida por su dedicación y su ternura.

Sponsored by the Small Grant Program and the Global Environmental Facility,  EcoMar, Inc. and the community of Carenero are implementing the Project: For a sustainable tourism on humpback whale watching from Carenero. The project includes, among its activities, a humpback whale monitoring programme with local students, extending into Carenero an activity that the CEBSE have been implementing in the region, since 1999. The program is under the responsibility of Dra. Liliana Betancourt, Vice-President of the EcoMar Program, Inc. researcher and teacher, with a vast experience in the formation of young people from Samaná and recognized by its knowledge and its tenderness.

El programa incluye clases teóricas donde los estudiantes aprenden -con el apoyo de materiales de capacitación elaborados por el Programa EcoMar- los aspectos básicos sobre la biología, ecología y conservación de las ballenas jorobadas. En clases prácticas, con salidas al mar, los alumnos aprenden las bases del monitoreo en la Bahía de Samaná. Aprenden el uso del GPS y el manejo de la planilla de monitoreo donde deberán plasmar cada vez que salgan a realizar su labor científica, información meteorológica, datos de cada avistamiento con las coordenadas de posición de las ballenas observadas, tipos de grupos sociales y patrones de conducta. Y como conocen que viven en el Santuario de Mamíferos Marinos de la Bahía de Samaná, el cual deben ayudar a proteger, existe una clase sobre las regulaciones para la observación de ballenas, de donde salen sintiéndose celosos inspectores.  

The program includes theoretical classes where the students learn -with the support of an educative materials elaborated by the Programa EcoMar- basic aspects on biology, ecology and conservation of the humpback whales. In practical exercises, from a boat in the sea, the students learn the bases of the monitoring system in the Bay of Samaná. They learn the use of the GPS and the handling of the monitoring sheet where they will have to write, every time they go to the monitoring activity in a vessel, the weather situation, data of each whale sighting with the coordinates of position of the observed whales, types of social groups and behavioural patterns. And as they know that they live in the Sanctuary of Marine Mammals of the Bay of Samaná, that they should help to protect, they receive an special lecture about regulations for the observation of whales, where they become severe inspectors.

Durante la temporada 2006  estos jóvenes estudiantes han participado en limpiezas de playas, han atendido el Rincón de las Ballenas y organizados en grupos, han salido todos los días disponibles a hacer su monitoreo a bordo de las embarcaciones turísticas de Carenero, imponiéndose en ocasiones a la inclemencia del tiempo.  Los estudiantes han aportado importantes datos científicos sobre las ballenas de valor para el conocimiento de la población que nos visita y su evolución futura. Esta actividad juvenil ha contado con el apoyo de madres, padres, maestros, maestras y de los dueños y dueñas de embarcaciones de Carenero quienes siempre hayan un espacio, entre los turistas que se aglomeran, para que venga “su monitor estudiante”. La participación de los estudiantes de Carenero, que en su interacción con los turistas locales y extranjeros devienen en improvisados y espontáneos guías de turismo, portadores de mensajes de ciencia y conservación ha sido uno de los acontecimientos más hermosos de un proyecto donde los jóvenes han tenido y se han ganado, el espacio que merecen.

During the whale season 2006 these young students have participated in beach clean campaigns, they have  attended the Corner of the Whales and, organized in groups, they have participated all available days in monitoring from the tourist vessels of Carenero, sometimes under very rough weather conditions. The students have contributed with important scientific data about the whales of value for the knowledge of the visitor population and its future evolution. This youthful activity has had the support of mothers, parents, teachers and also the owners of boats of Carenero, who always find a space for "his monitor student" in the boat, among the crowded tourists. The participation of the young students from Carenero, that in its interaction with the local and foreign tourists become natural and spontaneous tourism guides, carriers of science and conservation messages, have been one of the most beautiful events of a project where the young people have had and they have gained, the space they deserves.
