El Rincón de las Ballenas de Carenero The Corner of the Whales at Carenero

Bajo el auspicio del Programa de Pequeños Subsidios, el Programa EcoMar, Inc. y la Comunidad de Carenero han creado el Rincón de las Ballenas, un nuevo sitio de orientación y conservación en la  región de Samaná, que modestamente ampliará la intención educativa del ya existente Museo de la Naturaleza. Este rincón es atendido directamente por el Club de Madres de Carenero y los estudiantes locales, y es visitado por los turistas antes de tomar las yolas y salir a la observación de ballenas de modo que aprendan, en didácticos materiales que allí se exhiben, quiénes son las ballenas jorobadas (Megaptera novaengliae) y cual es la importancia de su conservación. Y para que puedan entender lo que observarán en el mar existe otro material didáctico sobre sus grupos sociales, que les ayudará a diferenciar una pareja de enamorados, de una tierna mamá que nada con su ballenato o un grupo activo, donde varios machos luchan por una hembra.

Sponsored by the Small Grant Program, the Programa EcoMar, Inc. and the community of Carenero have created The Corner of the Whales, a new place of orientation and conservation in the Samaná region, that modestly comes to  reinforce the educative intention of the existing Nature Museum. The Mother´s Club of Carenero and local students will take care of this place. This place is visited by the tourists before taking the yolas and going out to whale-watching so they can learn, in  didactics materials who are the humpback whales  (Megaptera novaengliae) and which is the importance of its conservation. To make possible that they understand what they will see later in the sea there is another didactic material about social groups, so they could differentiate a couple of whale lovers, from a tender mother and her calf or an active group where several males fight for a female.

Y además de su vida social también aprenden de sus conductas para saber que si una ballena "coletea" puede ser señal de que no quiere ser molestada o si saca la cabeza y se queda tranquila es posible que nos esté mirando para enterarse de quiénes somos y qué hacemos tan cerca de sus dominios. Por eso, también los turistas aprenden que en el Santuario de Mamíferos Marinos de la Bahía de Samaná existen regulaciones para observar a las ballenas, las cuales establecen el tiempo y la distancia de observación, garantizando así que los animales no sean molestados. Y como el turista va para el mar con tales lecciones la observación se torna agradable e instructiva, la salida al mar tiene un saldo positivo de enseñanza y las ballenas habrán ganado nuevos amigos en su lucha por sobrevivir.

In addition to whales social life, tourist also  learn about its behavior and they will know that if a whale "slaps with the tail" it could be a sign that it doesn´t want to be bothered or if it rises vertically with its head and remains calm maybe it is looking at us to find out who we are and what are we doing so next to its domains. That's why also the tourists should learn that in the Sanctuary of Marine Mammals of the Bay of Samaná there are regulations for whale watching that establish the time and the distance of observation to guarantee that the whales will not be bothered. And since the tourist goes to the sea with such lessons the observation becomes agreeable and instructive, the watching time has a positive balance of education and the whales win new friends in his struggle for surviving.

El Rincón de las Ballenas es un sitio para aprender donde se pueden comprar además materiales sobre Carenero y sus ballenas o lindas artesanías fabricadas por sus laboriosas mujeres. A este rincón no solo van los turistas sino también los estudiantes -muchos de los cuales participan en el monitoreo de las ballenas jorobadas en la Bahía de Samaná- o todo el que quiera saber un poco más sobre la vida de esos fascinantes animales que cada año nos premian con su visita. Es un espacio abierto de educación en una comunidad franca y amigable donde todos, pero especialmente los niños y los jóvenes ya están encontrando una nueva ventana al futuro.

The Corner of the Whales is a place to learn, where you can buy didactic materials about Carenero and its humpback whales or pretty crafts made by its laborious women. But not only the tourists go to this place but also the students -most of them participating in the humpback whale monitoring in the Samaná Bay- or everyone that wants to know a little more about the life of these fascinating animals that every year reward us with their  visit. It is an open space for education in a friendly and sincere community where all, but especially the children and the young people, are already finding a new window for the future.
