The Belfast club were one of three from Ireland who took part in the competition prior to the Irish Football Association banning its members from entering. Linfield went on to become the dominant club in Ireland and then Northern Ireland and it is rare for a season to pass without them being crowned either champions, cup winners or both. The Blues even reached the quarter finals of the European cup in the early seventies. Linfield left the English cup undefeated, being forced to withdraw due to the costs involved.
