The Giant Killers

Every F A cup giant killing since 1888

               COVENTRY CITY

Only one day stands out about all others in the history of Coventry City, the day Lloyd McGrath's cross in extra time in the 1987 cup final was directed into the Tottenham goal to clinch City's only major honour. Their heritage in the cup dates back to 1892, reaching the first round in 1908 before gaining league status in 1919. It took the sky blues over forty years to reach the big time after that under Jimmy Hill's sky blue revolution, which lead to over thirty years of relegation dodging before it inevitably happened in 2001. The 80s continues to be the iconic decade for Coventry in the cup as the opposite side of the cup winning coin is one of the biggest upsets of all time at Sutton in 1989, followed the following year by another humiliating exit to Northampton.
