The Giant Killers

Every F A cup giant killing since 1888

          CHARLTON ATHLETIC

In 1905 several youth clubs combined to create Charlton Athletic before rising through the Kent League and Southern League to become members of the Football League Third Division in 1921. Sixteen years later the Addicks reached the big time with promotion to the top flight in 1936 and eleven years after that came their greatest day when Chris Duffy fired the only goal of the game against Burnley to win the cup in 1947. The Addicks have been down to the tier, back among the elite and then down to the third tier a second time in the half century since, currently about to play their first game in the third tier for over thirty years in 2009. As a lower division club Charlton have produced some minor cup upsets but it was their home defeat by Cardiff in 1939 that stands out as the blackest day in the club's FA cup history.
