Welcome to the Frequently Asked Questions section of the page. Here, I will field some questions that I think will come up often pertaining to the website and elements featured, like stories and the comic Captain Gamer, OOC. All right, I made most of these up, if not all of them. Think of it as being pre-emptive.
The GamerHang
Q: Do you realize your persona is
really clichéd/dorky/ripped off of Captain N?
A: Thank you, o tact one. Anyway, when the Gameboyguru name got old, I searched
high and low for a new persona. I wanted to be an ultra-clichéd superhero. I
know it's a bad path, but it can really pay dividends if executed properly, and
I think I can do that. Originally, I went with GamerMan, but that was too much. After more searching, I
came up with Captain Gamer, which was perfect for my at-the-time untitled
fiction work. Your opinion on the name is your own, but if you really think my
persona is dorky, I ask you be open-minded, and read Digital Defender to
see just how "dorky" Captain Gamer really is.
As for the Captain N thing, the name has "Captain" in it and he's all
about video games, so he HAS to be a rip of Captain N, right? Not exactly. Where
as Captain N was Nintendo centered, Captain Gamer will reach all franchises,
making for more possibilities. Also, the main story dictates one long tale in
addition to a series of "episodes," unlike N, which merely goes
show-by-show. Lastly, Gamer's universe centers mostly around the concept of the
new technology, Digital Reality, more than the clash of video game characters in
the real world. This way, it does not get bogged down in the form of typical
stock fan fiction and becomes its own story rather than half-hour
advertisements.
Q: Why "The GamerHang?"
Why not CaptainGamer.com?
A: The GamerHang is actually named after an element in Digital Defender.
I'm afraid you'll actually have to read Digital Defender to see just what
the GamerHang is.
Q: How do I navigate this site?
A: Due to consolidation, navigating the site is easier than before. The two main
features, oddly, are the ones without pages of their own. All Digital
Defender chapters are accessible from the front page, and since OOC
is featured on Bob and George, there are links directing that way, too. All
other features have their own buttons, and without exception, the GamerHang's
top logo will lead back to the Main Page.
Q: How often do you update?
A: Both OOC and Digital Defender will be updated as I make them.
Ideally, OOC comics should come every other day and Digital Defender
updates monthly to bi-monthly. Tragically, my track record has been WAY off the
mark, but I never lose sight of obtaining such regularity.
Q: Why haven't you updated in a long time?
A: It'll show up in the newsreel. An inquiry as to how I'm doing or
feeling would be great.
Q: Will you link to me?
A: Most likely I'll be glad to. Drop me a mail at Venusar@AOL.com
and show me your website and I'll
probably add it to the links page. If you have a graphic you would like me to
display, send it on over! Just make sure to link back, though!
Q: What's the deal with this Czar Gamer
person?
A: Czar Gamer is actually two people. He is a character in the Captain Gamer
universe. Outside of that, though, Czar Gamer is my real-life brother. So whenever I refer to Czar and not
specifically the Digital Defender/OOC character, I'll be referring
to my brother.
Captain Gamer: Digital Defender
Q: So just who is Captain Gamer?
I won't tell!
A: I'll be happy to bring to attention all of the in-story evidence of Captain
Gamer's identity, but asking for a direct revelation will only result in a grand
side-step by yours truly.
Q: What's with the side characters? Isn't
this about video game characters?
A: A good question, and one that cannot be answered purely 'yes' and purely
'no.' There would be little point to creating a story if all I did was take
characters, happen to place them in the real world, and fight like we expect
them to, with the only difference being collateral damage. Captain Gamer:
Digital Defender has many sides and facets to it, and how many of them you
want to recognize is up to you. The 'heroes vs. villains' conflicts certainly is
an aspect of it, and if you only read just for that, that is fine. You would get
a lot more out of the story, however, if you took the effort to invest some care
in the non-game characters, as they all have their own stories and conflicts to
follow as well. Perhaps not as action-packed, but certainly still with something
to take away.
Q: I want my character to be in
your story. Can you put them in?
A: I'm afraid that is unlikely. Captain Gamer: Digital Defender is my story, and
unlike the fan fiction written for fun, I am actually writing something
that I want to be taken seriously not only as a video game-influenced story, but as a work of
fiction in general. There will be no user cameos, forum inside jokes,
self-insertion, god-modes (unless part of the story), references to other fan
fiction or web comic, or the like.
Q: Can you do a chapter on the
following game?
A: I'll gladly take any suggestion that you'll give! If anything, it may wake me
up to doing the next episode all the quicker. I may even be susceptible for
individual plot points, too! Just don't expect every request to see fruition
immediately or exactly as you expected it.
Q: Can you do a chapter on the
following anime?
A: Ah, the common link between video games and anime. Unfortunately, he is
called Captain Gamer, not Captain Anime. Any franchises that are more well known
for being anime (Inu Yasha, Naruto, etc) do not qualify for included in a Digital
Defender chapter. Franchises that are more well known for being video games,
though, (Pokemon, MegaMan Battle Network, etc) do qualify and if they are popular enough,
are almost guaranteed a chapter.
Q: Do you proofread your stories?
A: Not all the time. If my typos and MS Word errors leave you wondering if English
is my first language, then please feel free to tell me to go through again and
fix the error-riddled chapters. I'm only human. (DISCLAIMER: My species does not
indicate the in-story Captain Gamer's, so clue-seekers look elsewhere!)
Captain Gamer: OOC
Q: What is this about?
A: This comic generally parodies the great video games, and even some you've
probably never heard of. It's separated into filler comics with Gamer inserting
himself into games, and more of a "real world" setting where Gamer is
in more realistic surroundings and discusses games rather than partakes in them.
The vast majority of the comic, however, is a canon of its own and an ongoing
storyline. Where Digital Defender is centered around Digital Reality with
video game characters taking a back seat, the case is opposite in OOC.
The video game characters shine much more than the concept of Digital Realtiy.
They both partake in both stories, but each have an emphasis on other areas.
Q: Can I be in THIS?
A: There will be times when I need spectators or just people off at the side.
When those come around, I will include, in full detail, how you can cameo.
Q: Where do you get your sprites
and backgrounds?
A: Check the OOC credits.
Q: Can Captain Gamer be in my
comic?
A: That depends on many things, including the quality of the comic and the
nature of the cameo. I'd be happy to lend a likeness in many cases.
Q: So Captain Gamer knows every video game
character? That's so overused.
A: It's true that so many a fan author has used the premise of themselves living
in a world with or alongside fictional characters, often with questionable
quality, that is but a mere track record. Captain Gamer's familiarity varies
from character to character and it is my aim to use the concept in a way that
even the biggest sticklers for clichés will find my efforts passable.
