CANTER Playing Guide - New Member's Guide to all things CANTER

In this guide, you will find a quick rundown of all the information you need to get started being an active member of CANTER! Once you have made your two detailed posts describing your efforts to care for your schoolhorse, and have then created your own first horse, your first stop should be the bank to set up your account!

The Bank
At the Bank, you will start a new topic with the title of "Your Name" Account. Whenever you recieve or give money, you should try to go straight to the bank and record it. All new Members of CANTER start with $25,000. Money in the game of CANTER is exchanged using checks. All checks have the same format. There is an example below.

Check--
To: (name of the person you are paying)
From: (your name)
Date: (the date)
Amount: (the amount being paid)
Memo: (reson for paying, ex. entry fees for Pony Show)
You can choose to record your deposits and withdrawls using check format, but most members choose to simply state the amount, who they're paying, and the memo. (Look at some of the other members' accounts for examples.)

Businesses (excluding CANTER owned) and Optional Registries may choose to keep separate finances in the "Business & Optional Registry Bank". However, this is NOT mandatory and is up to the owner of the business or registry if they wish to keep the finances separate from their own, or combine them.

The Registry
After you've started your bank account, it's time to register your horse! Go to the Horse Registration board and start a new topic with the title "Your Name" Horses. You can post your horse's picture if you'd like, but as it uses more space, we ask that you don't. In your post put your horse's data (Name, Breed, Color, Gender, etc.), post, and you've got a horse! Many members choose to register their horses under their stable's name, but to have a stable, you must be an active member and complete the Stable Owner's Test at the University.

The University
The University offers many courses so you can be certified to teach a certain disipline, run a stable, or become a vet or farrier. To sign up for a course, make a post under the topic of the test you would like to take and one of the Professors will post the test as soon as they can. Then you will message the Professor that posted the test with your answers. Your test will be graded and you will be informed if you pass or fail. You may take any test the first time for free, but after that a fee of $50 must be paid to the University.

Showing & Competitions
Shows are judged using randomization. (randomizer.org if at all possible!) Prizes may be bought, but they may not jsut appear out of nowhere. Horses are only allowed to be shown or raced if they are registered at the Horse Ragistration board, have a stall at a barn, and are up to date on vet and farrier checkups. Please keep how many classes you enter your horse into reasonable! Do not enter 1 horse into 20 classes. Also, racehorses can only enter 1 race per competetion/event and may not show until properly retired fro mracing and retrained. Likewise, show horses may not race. CANTER runs on a simple point system. For any class that is not a race a horse may earn...

1st Place: 10 pts
2nd Place: 9 pts
3rd Place: 8 pts
4th Place: 7 pts
5th Place: 6 pts
6th Place: 5 pts
7th Place: 4 pts
8th Place: 3 Pts
9th Place: 2 pts
10th Place: 1 pt

(for any race...)
1st Place: 30 pts
2nd Place: 27 pts
3rd Place: 24 pts
4th Place: 21 pts
5th Place: 18 pts
6th Place: 15 pts
7th Place: 12 pts
8th Place: 9 pts
9th Place: 6 pts
10th Place: 3 pts

Any horse that achieves 200 points or more will recieve a " + " before their name. The # of +'s the horse has before it's name reflects how many increments of 200 points the horse has accomplished. The more points your horse has, the more valuable the horse is! Here is how horses will level-up according to points. You may show at a lower level than the point level if your horse needs more training, but you may not show higher than the point value of your horse. As you horse increase in level, it becomes harder to level, requiring more points to attain a higher level.

Level 1/Green or Beginner- 0-50 points
Level 2/Amateur- 51-150
Level 3/Novice- 151-300
Level 4/Intermediate- 301-500
Level 5/Advanced- 501 - 750
Level 6/World Class - 751- 950
Level 7/World Champion - 950+

Holding a Show/Competition
Any member may host a show. However, that member must own a stable, own a private showground, use the public showgrounds, or rent a showground/stable yard from a stable. There is no test to become a Show Ground Manager, but you must apply. There will be 2 managers for the Public CANTER showgrounds. If you wish to own a private showground, you must purchase the property from the Real Estate Office. Before a show can be run, you must have a place to hold it. Only one show may be held at a time (per showground).

Creation of Horses
All members may create 5 horses. You may recieve more creation credits now and then for doing something honorable, etc. However, you may only use one of these creations per year. Also, the horse you create does not automatically belong to you. You must "adopt" it from the Humane Society.

Breeding of Horses
In CANTER, horses do not mature until the age of 4, so no horse under age 4 may be bred. Mares may only be bred once a SIM year. The gestation period of a mare is 2 REAL weeks. During this period, the mare may not show. Stallions may be bred 3 times a SIM year. However, if you retire a stallion to breeding (he may NOT race or show again) he may breed 6 times a SIM year. Please announce any breedings on the Breeding Announcements board in the Horse Registration board. For every 2 points earned by the sire and dam of the foal, the foal will automatically recieve 1 point. This way, reputable and successful horses pass something on to their foals! Of course, only points earned prior to the foaling will be passed down to the foal!

Businesses
CANTER Government Businesses The Government of CANTER runs many of the businesses. The money earned by these businesses goes to the Government bank account, and all Government employees get a paycheck at the end of the SIM year. However, Government employees are also entiitled to these benefits:
- Discounts from the Government owned CANTER businesses.
- Earn extra Member Points.
- Earn extra Creation Credits.
- Free entry into CANTER Government hosted shows.

Privately Owned Businesses
Members may open their own business whenever they like. It must be approved by the CANTER Mods (Tara, Kels, and Candy) before it may open, however. Any private business must pay CANTER $500 a sim year. This tax pays for any supplies you may need to run the business. Other than the once a year fee, you keep any profits you make!

Optional Registries
Members may join and create optional registries. An optional registry may be anything from a Dressage Club to an Arabian Association. All registries must be approved before opening, and must have their own website (or message board). Also before opening, we request that there be a poll held and at least 5 horses be eligable for the registry. For example, we do not want a QH registry, and there only be 2 Quater Horses in the game. Registries may hold their own shows.
